@@ahmedal-saeedi5988 _Darwinian_ evolution is denied by a lot of religions in the common mindset, But Darwinian evolution isn't proven science fact, if you really want to gnaw at the bones of what defines 100% proven fact. As a religious individual it's perfectly clear to me that there is, in fact, some kind of evolutionary system in play, but I do not think (because I am an intelligent, thinking individual) that the modern, expanded and commonly touted theories (note that word - They *are* called theories) are the correct model. The Earth taking billions of years to form is only denied by _some_ religious _individuals._ You talk of willful ignorance, not faith; They are not the same thing. Exactly the same kind of denial is in play on the extreme scientific side of the argument as it is on the extreme religious side. I won't go into the many failings of (modern) science because the pertinent point has been made already and I'll repeat it in case you missed it: Faith is not the same as ignorance and an unwillingness to accept observation. Many people with a religious faith also accept the observations of the Earth and the Universe. Faith and ignorance are different concepts entirely. It is only the ignorant who conflate the two and it would serve you well to remember that faith is not just about the belief in God - That is a specific, theocratic association - But faith is a concept that exists regardless of any religious belief. Debasish Ray Chawdhuri Common misconception. Ancient humans who lived past infancy typically lived well into their sixties, the reason the average life expectancy was so low is because infant mortality was well over 50%.
@danielbenson64079 жыл бұрын
Teth47 your statement is very broad; first you must define Ancient Humans which could be any number of civilisations, living in any number of conditions, eating any number of diets, subject to any number of diseases and conflicts. and anyhow, why don't we get to count the infant mortality rate? i think they are people too, don't you? that's like finding the average wealth of a population, but not counting the poorest people.
@Teth479 жыл бұрын
Daniel Benson The point is that the average age statistic is misleading in terms of telling people what age adults typically lived to, which is an important longevity statistic, and the one people are usually thinking about when they talk about life expectancy. The statement is intentionally broad, because it outlines the fact that while diet is important, so long as it's somewhat balanced, it doesn't necessarily matter what specific foods you're eating, you're going to live a reasonably long life.
@Ironysandwich9 жыл бұрын
Teth47 While lower infant mortality may exaggerate the lifespan gain, it's not the sole reason for it. No matter how old an ancient human was their projected lifespan was shorter than it would be today. They didn't live healthier lives than us, it's just that an ancient human was only something on the order of 2 or 3 times more likely to die at a particular stage in early to mid adulthood rather than hundreds of times more likely as an infant.

I had a very similar journey with Derren Brown's shows! I was enthusiastically nodding in agreement when he was showing the BS of psychics, superstitions, astrology and such, but when he came to religious faith I was holding strong against his suggestions. Then I challenged myself to some tough intellectual honesty and I agreed to just imagine for an hour that what he is saying might be right. That shocked me so much that in the end I settled on a compromise and I agreed with a conclusion to one of his specials to admit that I believe because it makes me happy not because it's the objective truth. But I couldn't maintain that type of double-think for long and a few months later I realised (with a huge relief I must say) I actually don't believe any more. I was more than 30 at that time: 30 years spent with the faith basically being the meaning of life for me.

It doesn't mean other fascinating and weird stuff is not out there. Dark matter, for example, is mind blowing! Apply your resolve to learning about every you can, understanding how things work. He also portrays these "hippies" as the condescending ones, that there ignorant views on pharmaceutical companies are outdated and have no place in todays views on society.. ammm so what are your views on Animal Testing? Although every day we discover more of what couldn't be seen or heard, until the latest discovery. Could you coin me the definition you have for the term "mentally ill"? Many people are reared in certain situations that may affect there way of perceiving the world. Have you ever asked yourself why you do the things you do. Why you hesitate to even comprehend some things and views that would shock the general public? I myself am not entirely certain as to why this is, but I suspect past religious views/laws shaped much of what we live and think today. You said it yourself even; "man-made myths" By that logic, what shouldn't be seen as myth or false in what we have created thus far? Very vague statement, I know, but think about the little things that are created, and wiped out in the process. "Does the idea of knowledge frighten you?" (cough What are you fncking two?) By the way, Wikipedia once had the ability for anyone to edit the information that it had provided. I know this for a fact as a friend of mine typed into the description that he was the current king of my hometown. Also, what is your solution to drug dependency? Yes, I agree with him on many points. But, although wit, affective voice infliction and fantastic snappy, punchy animated visuals, accompanied by catchy quirky flowing jazz music is an interesting and from my perspective, somewhat manipulative form of spreading views, this does indeed have many holes and leaves the non-prejudiced individual like myself with many unanswered questions. *DISLIKE*

Ha ha! Yes, Scooby Doo is far more scientific than Oprah -- the characters in Scooby Doo always think critically and look beneath the surface to find the real cause of strange phenomena. Insights like this abound in this oddly rhyming, thoroughly entertaining, poetically whimsical, animated story. h/t Andre Engelbrecht and Mary Mangan, and, of course, Tim Minchin!

Spirit Science is interesting and it offers an alternative view in which some is bullshit and some of it cannot be proven or disproved at this current time. For someone to divulge completely into the belief system that it offers is silly. I'm an agnostic atheist, but i still I enjoy the idea of global consciousness, elevating our consciousness and some other aspects of Spirit Science. Don't completely trash it, just trash the people who believe everything they hear about it.
@ppp992210 жыл бұрын
Drew Jones yea the ideas are interesting just like the idea of super powers is interesting...its more the fact if someone starts saying superman exists is where you should call people out on their bullshit.
@Fwoodlax6310 жыл бұрын
The idea of global consciousness and a lot of the things that go along with that in spirit science aren't on the superpower level. Carl Sagan even talked about that somewhat. The chakra stuff does have some background too in the sense that meditating is scientifically proven to be good for you. Healing with rocks and things like that, however, you hit the nail on the head.

***** I don't necessarily agree with that myself. It may or may not be bullshit, I just assume it's untrue until it's shown to be otherwise. If it can't be shown otherwise, then I'll go on assuming it's untrue.

Lyrics to this amazing piece: Inner North London, top floor flat, All white walls, white carpet, white cat, Rice paper partitions, modern art and ambition The host's a physician, Bright bloke, has his own practice His girlfriend's an actress, an old mate of ours from home And they're always great fun, so to dinner we've come. The 5th guest is an unknown, The hosts have just thrown us together for a favour 'Cause this girl's just arrived from Australia And she's moved to North London And she's the sister of someone or has some connection. As we make introductions I'm struck by her beauty She's irrefutably fair with dark eyes and dark hair But as she sits, I admit I'm a little bit wary 'Cause I notice the tip of the wing of a fairy Tattooed on that popular area just above the derrière And when she says "I'm Sagittarian, " I confess a pigeonhole starts to form And is immediately filled with pigeon when she says her name is Storm. Conversation is initially bright and light hearted But it's not long before Storm gets started: "You can't know anything, knowledge is merely opinion!" She opines, over her Cabernet Sauvignon, Vis-à-vis some unhippily empirical comment by me. "Not a good start" I think, We're only on pre-dinner drinks, And across the room, my wife widens her eyes, Silently begs me: "Be nice!" A matrimonial warning, not worth ignoring So I resist the urge to ask Storm Whether knowledge is so loose-weave of a morning when Deciding whether to leave her apartment by the front door Or the window on her second floor. The food is delicious and Storm, Whilst avoiding all meat happily sits and eats As the good doctor, Slightly pissedly holds court on some Anachronistic aspect of medical history When Storm suddenly insists: "But the human body is a mystery!" "Science just falls in a hole when it Tries to explain the the nature of the soul." My hostess throws me a glance. She, like my wife, knows there's a chance I'll be off on one of my rare but fun rants but I shan't My lips are sealed, I just wanna enjoy the meal And although Storm is starting to get my goat I have no intention of rocking the boat Although it's becoming a bit of a wrestle Because like her meteorological namesake, Storm has no such concerns for our vessel: "Pharmaceutical companies are the enemy, They promote drug dependency at the cost of the natural remedies That are all our bodies need They are immoral and driven by greed. Why take drugs when herbs can solve it? Why use chemicals when homeopathic solvents can resolve it? I think it's time we all Return-to-live with natural medical alternatives." And try as I like, a small crack appears in my diplomacy-dike. "By definition, " I begin, "Alternative medicine, " I continue, "Has either not been proved to work, or been proved not to work. Do you know what they call Alternative medicine that's been proved to work? Medicine." "So you don't believe in any natural remedies?" "On the contrary Storm, actually Before we came to tea, I took a natural remedy derived from the bark of a willow tree A painkiller that's virtually side-effect free It's got a weird name, darling, what was it again? M-masprin? Basprin? Oh yeah! Asprin! Which I paid about a buck for down at the local drugstore. The debate briefly abates as my hosts collect plates But as they return with desserts Storm pertly asserts: "Shakespeare said it first: There are more things in heaven and Earth than exist in your philosophy. Science is just how we're trained to look at reality, It doesn't explain love or spirituality. How does science explain psychics? Auras? The afterlife? The power of prayer?" I'm becoming aware that I'm staring, I'm like a rabbit Suddenly trapped in the blinding headlights of vacuous crap. Maybe it's the Hamlet she just misquothed Or the sixth glass of wine I just quaffed But my diplomacy dike groans And the arsehole held back by its stones can be held back no more: "Look, Storm, Sorry I don't mean to bore you but there's no such thing as an aura! Reading Auras is like reading minds or Tea-leaves or star-signs or meridian lines These people aren't applying a skill, They're either lying or mentally ill. Same goes for people who claim they hear God's demands And spiritual healers who think they've magic hands. By the way, why do we think it's okay for People to pretend they can talk to the dead? Isn't that totally fucked in the head? Lying to some crying woman whose child has died And telling her you're in touch with the other side? I think that's fundamentally sick Do we need to clarify here that there's no such thing as a psychic? What are we, fucking two? Do we actually think that Horton Heard a Who? Do we still believe that Santa brings us gifts? That Michael Jackson didn't have facelifts? Are we still so stunned by circus tricks that we think That the dead would wanna talk to pricks like John Edwards? Storm to her credit despite my derision keeps firing off clichés With startling precision like a sniper using bollocks for ammunition "You're so sure of your position but you're just closed-minded I think you'll find that your faith in science and Tests is just as blind as the faith of any fundamentalist" "Wow that's a good point, let me think for a bit. Oh wait, my mistake, that's absolute bullshit. Science adjusts it's views based on what's observed. Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved. If you show me that, say, homeopathy works, then I will change my mind I'll spin on a fucking dime I'll be embarrassed as hell, But I will run through the streets yelling 'It's a miracle! Take physics and bin it! Water has memory! And while it's memory of a long Lost drop of onion juice seems Infinite It somehow forgets all the poo it's had in it!' You show me that it works and how it works And when I've recovered from the shock I will take a compass and carve 'Fancy That' on the side of my cock." Everyone's just staring now, But I'm pretty pissed and I've dug this far down, So I figure, in for penny, in for a pound: "Life is full of mysteries, yeah But there are answers out there And they won't be found by people sitting around Looking serious and saying 'Isn't life mysterious?' 'Let's sit here and hope. Let's call up the fucking Pope. Let's go watch Oprah interview Deepak Chopra.' If you wanna watch tele, you should watch Scooby Doo. That show was so cool because every time there Was a church with a ghoul or a ghost in a school They looked beneath the mask and what was inside? The fucking janitor or the dude who ran the waterslide. Because throughout history every Mystery ever solved has turned out to be Not Magic. Does the idea that there might be knowledge frighten you? Does the idea that one afternoon on Wiki-fucking-pedia might enlighten you frighten you? Does the notion that there may not be a supernatural so blow your Hippy noodle that you'd rather just Stand in the fog of your inability to Google? Isn't this enough? Just this world? Just this beautiful, complex, wonderfully unfathomable, natural world? How does it so fail to hold our attention that we have to Diminish it with the invention of cheap, man-made myths and monsters? If you're so into your Shakespeare, lend me your ear: "To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, To throw perfume on the violet... is just fucking silly" Or something like that. Or what about Satchmo?! "I see trees of Green, Red roses too, " And fine, if you wish to glorify Krishna and Vishnu in a Post-colonial, Condescending bottled-up and labeled Kind of way then whatever, that's ok. But here's what gives me a hard-on: I am a tiny, insignificant, ignorant bit of carbon. I have one life, and it is short and unimportant... But thanks to recent scientific advances I get to live Twice as long as my great great great great uncleses and auntses. Twice as long to live this life of mine Twice as long to love this wife of mine Twice as many years of friends and wine Of sharing curries and getting shitty at good-looking hippies With fairies on their spines and butterflies on their titties. And if perchance I have offended Think but this and all is mended: We'd as well be 10 minutes back in time, For all the chance you'll change your mind.

This is good stuff, and I love Tim Minchin. His song "The Fence" pretty much encompasses my personal outlook, but lets try not to jerk off with this poem, eh? I rather think that figuring things out for yourself is the important thing here. Don't follow ANYTHING blindly. It's not about her opinions, as daft as they are, it's about the fact that she's spouting other people's ideas because they have a bit of a spiritual whiff about them, and she quite likes being a hippie - she likes to think she's totally open minded and chill. That's why I don't like those people. They tend to preach a lot of things I agree with - peace, liberty, fairness - but at the same time burp up a thousand out of context quotes and misconceptions. They rely on other people being intelligent and thoughtful, and just channel it all, except with the filter of not quite having understood the core of it.
@TheWorldPillow6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think that would be the irritating part. Her spouting out things just to look smart or have this certain image, rather than understanding things herself and having an interesting discussion itself. As she is represented in the video, all of Storm's comments were just repeats or attempts to peripherally manipulate people into always seeing her as "right" without any real reason. I really don't like it when people do that. I am a little superstitious, and can't say that we would fully know that there /isn't/ something out there. You know, you hear stories, sometimes. And, there are many people, mostly media, who also use the title of Science to make all sorts of strange, oversimplified claims. My favorite is the "scientists said..." and people just like Storm can do the same, just by using science as their "church" in this case instead. Which is also irritating. And is probably what led to the making of this video, indirectly. Luckily! There is such a thing as truth and things that somehow come together to make sense in your mind. And when you learn stuff slowly yourself, and think about what makes sense and doesn't and know why, then you're on the right path. Which is basically most of what you just said, but I agreed so much that I had to reiterate it all in my own words, haha.

@@PianoDentist The theology department of my university hosted something they called "cafe abraham". Essentially a nice little pavillion they built where they had some students and some profs and they tried to engage students in some conversation about religion over a nice cup of tea or coffee. I was interested in that cup of tea and some good conversation is always nice so i went there. Long story short, the conversation quickly boiled down to one of my first questions: What exactly is a "soul"? The anwser the prof gave was (translated from german) "the soul is what gives the body it's form". However when i pointed out that this may sound profound but is actually just gibberish and asked for clarification the prof was totally stumped. We talked a while longer before she pawned me off to one of her collegues that turned out equally stumped. Didn't get a clear anwser to the very end.

@@tranquilthoughts7233 Interesting story. I think they call that a "deepidy". I guess theology isn't as philosophically rigorous as other philosophical disciplines/applications. Probably no surprise that theology or just an explanation of the soul, falls over when ontological justifications are required.
