As I was preparing for travel, the unexpected happens. First a big storm blows in and knocks out most of the power in New Brunswick. A week later came a second storm hits with an even worse wallop. Did the cabin survive the onslaught of two Manic Mondays in a row?

Hi Slim, I love your videos and have been a subscriber for over 5 years, thank you for the great content over the years, However, I have to say, as a tree surgeon with over 40 years experience, what you were doing going outside during those storms was downright madness. I wouldn't have gone out during those storms, even if I was wearing a safety helmet. Please stay safe and carry on making great content......... and don't do anything that daft again anytime soon.

Exactly, and it doesn't even take a big limb, I've seen one about an inch punch a hole in a wood board (maybe 3/8" thick?) when it landed right on the end, like a spear dropped straight down. @@karenebarker9244

I'm in hurricane country myself and I have no issues going outside during a storm, but I'm not willing to get near falling / flying debris. I had that during Hurricane Ian where the roof of the building next to mine was coming off, so we stayed against our building on the downwind side during that part of the storm.

WOW Slim! I think that it was a miracle that none of those trees came down on either your Cabin , your truck and more importantly you! I am not going to lie , I was afraid for you when you was outside filming in the storms. I am in Vermont , so we also got those storms here. There was lots of trees down , power outages , flooding , and at least two people that I know of were hit by falling trees and did not survive.. I am really sorry for the damage around your Cabin , and I am very thankful that you , your Cabin and truck are okay. You'll get through this Slim. Wishing you all the very best and Merry Christmas to you.

We feel your pain. We are in NB , on Deer Island , we're caught in that storm too. We lost power and just had it restored last night. We saw the kindness of neighbors who helped us with a bigger generator, hot food , supplies and opened their homes to us. We thought we were prepared but you can never really prepare for a major storm like this. Trees came down but we had none fortunately hit the house. We are waking this morning to full heat and running water and THAT'S our Christmas gift. I hope you get powerlines fixed soon and stay safe ! Merry Christmas !!

I'm glad you are okay Slim. This reminds me of the time I was run out of the high Sierra mountains because of super high winds. Afterward, the landscape like just like yours. Many very large trees were uprooted. One fell right in our camping spot after we pulled out. Look on the bright side. Now you are going to have plenty of firewood for years to come. I can't wait to see what you make out of the fallen Cedar tree.

i'm from Oklahoma and i live under huge trees.. Oaks and Birch and all types. I have watched tornados go by and the wind can get a little unnerving but the only time i have been afraid was in an ice storm with no wind at all. It iced for about 24 hours or more and everything was fine. The next morning you just started hearing cracks from all over the neighborhood at about the same time. It was the sounds of limbs and trees falling all at once and no where was safe lol you could feel the limbs shake the floor when they fell.. I live on a corner lot and i had limb debris over 6 feet high stacked completely around my yard during clean up. Looked like some kinda old west fort lol

Years ago I moved from Southern California to Whidbey Island Washington and they had a huge wind storm. Power was out for several days and it snowed. Huge tree fell across the driveway and we were stuck for a week. Quite an introduction to the Northwest. I’ve also been in a category 4 hurricane. So, I feel you. It can be scary when the winds are howling. I feel your pain.

Not sure how old the original cabin was but you can feel some small comfort that it’s lasted through other storms over the years. Hopefully no more storms like this one this season!

This reminds me of a night when there was a huge storm in my off grid cabin in the Chaleur Bay area. I was all cozy with my dog, sitting and cooking on the wood stove as I always did. Granted, I was happy a tree didn't hit my cabin. When all was said and done, I took a walk on the mountain to socialize and see how our mountain fared. I found out that everyone that wasn't off grid, had no power. That storm put into perspective the low stress environment I had created for myself.

I am glad to see that you got through that well. Shame about the trees coming down, but great that they didn't do any real damage. They should give plenty of firewood for next year. After a storm like that, take a close look at the other trees near your cabin for damaged limbs or signs of cracks in the trunks. They might have been weaken enough to be a problem in a future storm. Would be worth it to take some extra time and also take down some of those dead standing trees while you're at it, and the larger dead branches in the area of the cabin. Saw a couple of them during your walkabout. They might be further back from the cabin but if they fall the wrong way they could send another tree towards you. Stay safe - and next time please stay inside til the storm subsides. You're out there alone, and if a big branch or worse comes down and hits you, you might be without help for a long time.

Slim, I'm glad your cabin survived those storms and its too bad you lost that many trees. One of my good friends lost his Sierra mountain cabin and almost all the trees in that area of the forest in the most recent California wildfires. He and his wife owned it only one month! He says he's going to rebuild. I asked him If he would be better off taking the insurance money and finding another cabin that has mature Pine trees because you're 68 and your trees won't grow back in your lifetime. He said the grand kids will see them come back.

I echo the sentiments of many when I say you were very fortunate not to have had any damage to you, your cabin or your truck during the two storms. No doubt you took the opportunity to see if there are any leaks for wind and water into your cabin. There is an advantage to your solar powered cabin in a situation like that. One suggestion when you do buy a gas powered chainsaw; get a good quality one. It will payback with low or no maintenance. It doesn’t have to be the biggest one, just one that will take care of most of your needs. I followed that advice and have one that I bought new 30 years ago that still works like the day I bought it.

Happy to see your cabin is still in tact Slim, it could have been a lot worse. You now have years of firewood as well as some choice lumber for furniture and other projects as you said. Once you get your chainsaw I suggest a mill attachment capable of processing the cedar and larger pines into dimensional size lumber to build your addition and a firewood/truck or trailer shelter, you're going to need it. These storms have become an opportunity to enrich your cabin experience naturally and provide you with a source to heat your cabin(along with some awesome content) for many years to come. I know you want to get on the road but it will be waiting for you after everything is all cleaned up.

I don't know what to say, Slim. Being from South Louisiana, I've seen some hurricanes, but I don't think I've ever seen one that brought down so many trees in one spot, as these storms did. Yes, you're right: You need to stay indoors until the wind dies down, and you need to beef up your emergency preparedness plan. So do we. We rely too much on electric tools, too. Definitely a couple of nasty storms. Maybe it was just time for the new growth to come up. May be a good time to think about planting some different types of trees so they can in time help to support those beautiful evergreens. Thank goodness all the main things were spared any damage. Glad you and your home/truck are safe. Remember to appreciate the time it takes to clean it up. God has a plan. Peace, Love and Freedom 🇺🇲

Im in north Florida. My house is only 800 square feet and i am surrounded by 100 ft pines and oak trees. Trust me, nothing is scarier during storms and hurricanes than the sound of the wind, branches hitting the house and trees coming down. Im petrfiied every time and so glad when the storms have passed and the sun comes up. Love your cabin and the wood burning stove. Be safe.

You have completely transformed your little cabin from what it was when you first showed it to us. You will get this mess cleaned up little by little. Just keep plugging away at it and yes be thankful none of them fell on your wonderful little cabin. ☀️

Sorry to see such a mess to clean up and the delay in travel to warmer climate. The multitude of fallen trees however is a fortunate outcome for you and the cabin. Thanksgiving comes late, may the rest of the winter be a happy / peaceful holiday.

Wow slim. Glad you and your cabin are ok. I live in southern New Hampshire and we did have a lot of wind, rain and flooding (in the White Mountains) but nothing like New Brunswick. I do live in a highly wooded area and we also have a generator (just in case). Around 10 years ago we lost our electricity for two weeks due to the power lines being ripped off of our house. Thanks to an emergency crew from Canada it was temporarily restored until a final fix could be made by our local electricity provider. We enjoy your videos. Stay safe, neighbor to the north.

Slim, that wasn't a wise idea to get out in that storm, there was some very large limbs falling... So glad you got back inside safe... You take care and stay inside when there's storms outside.

Glad you're okay, that the cabin survived, and so did the truck. I know you hate to lose your gorgeous forest but as always you're up for the challenge so I know you'll be okay. Hang in there and be safe Slim. Could have been a lot worse, so the powers were looking after you. Sending good vibes your way. Blessings too if they count for you. 👍

Wow, this episode gave me PTSD, 5 years ago a 3 foot diameter redwood fell in a big storm just 8 feet from my bed! I had just jumped up at the sound of a howling wind and was across the room as it crashed down! it just touched one corner of my roof and an electric cable kept it suspended above the attached greenhouse! The tree service sent a 10 man crew and then 4 monster PG&E trucks and a 12 man crew restored the power. Afterwards the foreman said that if it wasn't an emergency repair the bill would have been $12,000~15,000 to fix! Gracias a Dios, you made it through my friend... X-mas Cheer to you.

Sorry to see the damage, by next winter, you'll have plenty of firewood. Save some of the larger sections of that cedar.... you can make boards of it, or something to enhance the cabin.

Hello Slim, Glad you are ok. I appreciate the videos that you make but none of them is worth your life. I hope you realize that now. Our storms are not as severe although we have lived thru some tough ones. Earlier this spring a persimmon tree top broke out and took the service line to the house down. Took a few days to repair that. We live on Pine Mountain in eastern Kentucky, lots of trees. Take your time cleaning up those down trees because there are plenty of places to get hurt doing that. Sorry we don’t live close enough to be of any help. I have a few chain saws that would definitely help out on your situation. Stay safe and don’t go out in anymore storms PLEASE.

So happy that YOU are okay. We recently had to have some trees removed near our house due to potential storm damage. To get to them, a wonderful hemlock had to be removed as well as a few more. So sad to loose the glorious trees. Like you said, some of these will have a second life in your cabin. Wishing you well Katy

I'm a tree person and I ❤ trees and will generally NOT cut down any, however, it looks like all the way to the Lake, you have a good amount of trees that are dead. If I were you, I'd have them cut down so that not only would it improve your view but it would be less hazardous during storms. Think it's time to thin those trees and you'll have lots and lots of firewood. Just a thought. Stay safe. Happy holidays.

Slim, I really enjoy your videos. I’ve watched many. I must say that when I saw the first video about the cabin I was skeptical, to say the least. It seemed so rough I first felt you were only showing it to make your ultimate choice look better! 😄 I now heartily admit that you have taken a very rough project and transformed it into a very nice little nest! It really has come a long way. I know you must be proud of what you have accomplished, and rightfully so! Please keep the great videos coming!
