So 2015 , Kanye went to perform at the Brit Awards and he brought out a bunch of Uk grime artists on stage as a sign of like appreciation . Stormzy being one of them so people started calling him and other grime rappers backup dancers until Shut Up dropped
@GrizzlytheNatural2 жыл бұрын
Fun fact this is actually a CLASSIC grime instrumental Functions on the Low which is off a beat tape by Ruff Squad called White Label Classics, OG grime And the backup dancer bars are digs at Kanye West's performance at the Uk BRIT Music Awards in 2015 when he brought out grime aritsts to dance behind his debut performance of the Ye single 'All Day' which rubbed a lot of artists the wrong way because the UK scene was quite literally being put in the background of their own awards

Hearing you talk about the dialect similarities between London and Nigeria is really interesting - there's actually a name for the dialect spoken by Stormzy and others: MLE, or Multicultural London English, which is essentially what resulted from the influx of immigrants to London from the Caribbean, South Asia and West Africa. The UK has such a massive range of dialect and accent though, everywhere you go people speak differently and use different slang; MLE is really something unique to London, although variants of it have started to crop up in other multicultural urban regions.
@mr_dunne_author2 жыл бұрын
MLE? I've never heard that one. Most would say it's a mix of Patois & urban slang aka broken English..
@DJAutoload2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is it’s called Jafaican growing up in Hackney it was just the local twang but now you hear it everywhere which surprises me every time especially in the sticks 🤣

Damn Nostalgic feeling watching this again. This song is what blew Stormzy to heights never seen before in the UK for a grime artist. He went on to have two number 1 albums and a few number 1 hits. Collaborated with huge artists like Ed, Burna boy and apparently knocked back Jay z on the verse of “take me back to London” as he didn’t think it would be authentic and the right fit. We are due an album from him soon hopefully.

This beat was on so many pirate radio sets, so many cyphers in parks, youth clubs and bedroom studios back in the early Grime days like '05 times before Stormzy made this. When Stormzy dropped this it was a throwback to classic Grime even then.
@EatMyVlogs2 жыл бұрын
Hyped for the scru'd up of this, interested to see what you do on the beat On a side note the video for shut up is grime at its core. Chilling in the park spitting over a beat on a phone with the mandem hyping the spitters up. You don't see this much anymore and that's why it stands as a part of grime history.

I think you slightly misunderstood the Lord of the yard bar. It was meant to be a play on Lord of the Mics which he referenced just before. Lord of the Mics is an event where 2 artists clash. the whole "back up dancer" scheme had to do with the digs he was getting along as other uk grime rappers for being part of the "crowd/back up dancers" during kanye's performance at the brit awards in 2015, ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXKlnGqKos-hjM0&ab_channel=KanyeWestVEVO ) the general consensus was kanye had them on stage as a way of paying homage to the uk grime scene but some people were offended as to how the uk rappers were just in the back and all, and there weren't any collabs that came out of it and stuff..unlike how drake on the other hand has worked with skepta ..headie one etc infact the great trap lore ross does an excellent job explaining the backstory to this song here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2q7XmOhbbCNnJI&ab_channel=TrapLoreRoss
