could you actually try to justify why you think the game isnt asking people to go vegan? i kinda think your position as someone who eats meat is kinda blinding you tbh, it is the most core part of the story and you get the good ending by reverting it, and its really not "committed exceptions" that disagree, its actually pretty common to be vegan/vegetarian, australia where i live has some of the largest meat farming amounts of any nation and 12 percent of all australians are vegetarian, thats not an exception thats one in 10 people, thats more then the rate of people with red hair the fact that the game gets you to identify and love specifically one animal shows to me that its message isnt that this is a sad event but that quite literally it needs to be stopped, it would be a sad reality without the duck but with it the intention seems clear
@redrisleyАй бұрын
You're correct that I do come in the perspective of a non vegan, which does effect my interpretation! (Though by 'committed exceptions' I meant people who remove themselves from animal products entirely, even with things like crayons, medicine, clothing, plastic, all of which contain byproducts and hence, even if not directly eaten, still make us a 'consumer' in animal markets. There are tons of vegans, like you mention, but less of the later). Honestly I was concerned that some people would hear the game is 'anti-meat', feel it's just meant to make them feel bad, and hence fully disregard the game's the more nuanced themes (Which would be a real shame, and I'll admit did scare me away from labeling it as such. Although that fear is probably a contributor to the problem vegans face when trying to get their arguments taken literally). The player is meant to feel against the use of the animals, but the situation is still complicated as it's true that the civilian's need more water. And while the player is able to make a dent in the system themselves by reverting the train, it would be very difficult for singular people to have such vast effects in the real world. Hence, I wanted to show how the game could relate to people 'in the inbetween'. Those who embrace eating meat, and who don't intend to go vegan, but even so should not become defensive at the idea that animal farming is cruel. Cuase it is! Especially when run by big money execs who don't care about life quality for the animals. I viewed Threshold as a call to be more mindful, and embrace having some responsibility for how animals are treated as active consumers: that an impactful and necessary take-away even for those who won't jump all the way to veganism after playing. Progress, at least. Admittedly, my thoughts were filtered by my initial assumption that the animals were a metaphor for humans/war/inhuman labor. The use of the term 'corpse' initially confused me as it is primarily used when referring to human bodies, rather then animals. After considering the game was being more literal then expected, and perhaps used the word from a vegan's perspective that a dead animal is equally disturbing as a dead human, I read more into the feelings of responsibility/guilt/disgust the game implies clerks have to come to terms with. As a meat-eater the animal corpses didn't give me an immediate 'ick' or fear (besides the general disgust of dead things at all), cause animal farming is a normal practice. The big reveal may have been going for a 'soylent green' level of reaction, as the water is made from bodies, but to a non-vegan the comparison just doesn't hit the same. I think this is one reason a lot of let's players discuss the game as 'weird / creepy' rather then go into the details/themes. Cause the topic of animals being used to benefit people doesn't strike many as unnatural, especially in a setting like Threshold where we didn't get to see how they were killed or how cruelly they were treated before death. If the game was aiming for a 'striking moment of disgust' as to support the vegan concept of consuming animals being horrible, the moments may not have hit many players in the way they intended. The mindsets are different, that is. So then, I tried to look more at what concepts did strike a cord with me, and assumed they may be more intentional. The 'there are real wars and genocides out there' does directly compare animal farming and human genocide, implying the developer views them as similar. An interview also emphasized that the game dev intended it to be 'political', which I had assumed regarded the critique on the government itself, but could also mean that yeah, the game is unabashedly pro-veganism. Especially since the player does actively work to dismantle the train. You could be totally right! In fact there's a strong chance that is the case. I definitely don't mean to refuse the stance that it is a war cry against the cruelty of eating animals at all. Either way, it nice that the game can be interpreted in so many different ways, and has take-aways that support it's end message even for people on different levels of meat eating! 😄

The duck is a great wake up call. You see a mountain of corpses, but we have been so desensitized that you just brush it off. The mountain has always been there, it keeps growing everyday, the hundreds of corpses you throw on the pile is not even noticeable, so you don't stop. You get ridiculed for even saying we should throw fewer corpses on the pile. Yet you get attached to "1" duck. Its not one of the billion duck corpses in the pile, this is your duck. Its inconceivable to think to throw this one in the pile and so you do everything in your power to protect it. Even tho its exactly the same as the others you couldn't care less about.
@redrisleyАй бұрын
Very nice point, the duck does function as a ‘pet vs food’ comparison. It’s a shame it’s only given conditionally. I didn’t find it naturally in my Playthrough, and only got it later after having seen how to do so. The ‘saved ?/?’ Text is probably meant to push a second play through, since you can’t help but wonder what you could of protected. I hadn’t even considered the metaphorical value of the mountain. If it is meant to suggest the growing pile of slaughtered animals, like you say, then the loss of oxygen likewise speaks on the direct correlation between mass animal slaughter and the worsening health of our environment/world. The clerk is working at the apex of the animal farm system, watching as we hit the limit/threshold. The longer it goes on, the worse the world gets

Yeah! I assume it refers to the start of the river (where looking into the grate gives you that close-up shot), and is your early hint that the water isn't coming from a large natural reservoir (like the bosses first implied when you find the fish, when you haven't figured out what's in the train yet). But the use of the would 'goes' implies the filtered water isn't even going anywhere. In that case you could theorize that the water isn't used to help civilians like it's said to, perhaps instead being given to the powerful, supporting the antigovernmental themes. Or maybe it's not used at all 🤔 and the whole animal destruction is just to decrease competitors for natural water supplies? Concepts concepts~

Another interesting point to the air canisters: The more you work there, the less you can tell of it. It is a system that ensures that people who work there for a long time, can't actually tell anyone about the things they saw. This might also explain, why MO carries pen and paper with him. Maybe it wasn't the higher ups forgetting about supplying our character with those items as well, but maybe MO simply can't speak anymore from working there for years, therefore having gained enough trust and need for this form of communication to allow it.

Playing completely blind, it brought to my mind the cruelty of borders (I live on the US - Mexico border). The country determining difficulty with no explanation of how, and the setting in “the border post” read to me as the unknowable challenges of being born on either side of a wall. A difference of less than a mile determining whether you live in inescapable poverty, whether you have enough water to drink. An artificial wall becomes the threshold between a life of opportunity and one of destitution. An unending torrent of bodies being sacrificed for what we are told is a necessary evil. The line “there are actual genocides and wars happening out there” made me think of the way governments will redirect attention to the atrocities of others while either obscuring their own or denying that their atrocity counts among these assuredly more terrible ones. The animal corpses made me think of the way people who are born “other” in these systems are treated like livestock, viewed as less than human. Though not likely *the* true story of Threshold, I remember *a* true story from 2022 where a semi trailer was found in El Paso where people had been transported into the country and then trapped inside, left to dehydrate and die, cooking under the hot desert sun. Dozens of people (51!!) hoping for any chance at a better life for their families, herded and discarded like cattle for someone’s profit. I understand now that Threshold is more overtly about the horrific cruelty of the meat industry and consumerism. Yet, I find it both intriguing and disturbing that the symbolic venn-diagram of this and border-cruelty to (in places) be an almost perfect circle

The only thing that rankles me about the messaging is that it doesnt emphasize enough the poverty that drives consumers to need meat at those cheap prices. I know the game does address it by comparing it to people needing water: its a necessity, you NEED the water, but it's still an ugly process. But with how insanely expensive the bare minimum of life is, it just seems like such a luxury to be able to have an opinion on all this. Its hard to care about how animals are being treated when I'm struggling to make ends meet. It sucks, but my family has to eat. I guess thats the point of the game. But like, when you come out with a solution for poverty, we can talk about animals being treated humanely.
@loic3786Ай бұрын
Even as a vegan I deeply agree with your comment ❤ I just can't help but feel sad about how so much public funding goes into making meat cheaper, rather than making vegetables and legumes (high sources of protein) more affordable, as they would actually be much much cheaper than even the cheapest meat and it would be cheaper to feed oneself throughout the year. If we weren't walking on our heads we'd use this public funding to make plant based foods cheaper, nobody would go hungry worldwide anymore (80% of farmlands used for animal feed, we could easily sustain several times the current world population by going plant-based), all the while still getting all the nutrients we need. The problem is that the private interests of the meat industry are in the way. I hope my comment doesn't feel like an argument against yours when my intention is to actually build on it. Sending you the best vibes 😊

methane emissions arent a problem. methane is CH4 the hydrogen is from water and carbon from plants. the plants get them after producing O2 and glucose using water co2 and energy. basicly the contents of those gases (methane) are already in the atmosphere so we arent adding nothing to the mix. wich is different from carbon emissions. bcuz we release them through burning coal and petrol after retreaving it from deep in the soil thus adding more carbon to the atmosphere. the meat industry helps to add carbon to the atmosphere via transporting.

Interesting concept this game has. But yeah, I do believe that this, metaphorically speaking, is that humans slaughtered so much just to live (not just animals, but those without priviledge as well). We already live in a world where resources could no longer sustain every single human. We could only slow down the train, but we could not stop it. And also, eating meat is not a crime, it's part of our diet (otherwise, we would have stomach of a cow and all molar teeth), but if we take it in a more sensible and responsible way, we might improve our environment.

@redrisleyАй бұрын
That's the interesting part of the lore yeah, that in this world there is already a dire need for new sources of water. A lot of people would support any solution, even the government's choice in Threshold, as it's natural instinct to value your own specie's survival above other creatures. But, the fact that the government is hiding the process removes the people's ability to have an opinion/reaction at all, leaving those in power able to come to any conclusion they want. Many other civilians surely would not approve of this solution to get water, especially since it, speaking literally, raising animals just too turn into water would probably take more water then it gives, and just killing any and all pre-existing animals would have other horrible effects on the environment. Overall though, It's less the decision itself (Which you can admit would require obscene amounts of slaughter for not a ton of water), and more the fact the government felt the right to commit to it behind closed curtains.
@AdanSolasАй бұрын
@@redrisley In all honesty, the people don't need to be given a say in what happens if it's for their own benefit. Yes, I'm aware that this logic has been used for bad things in the past, but the problem has always been the action and not that it was done in secret. We haven't been given enough information in the game to determine whether or not this method of obtaining water is actually bad for the environment (which it very well could be, if indeed pre-existing animals are being used), so it's possible that it's not as bad as it looks. I say this because I find it a bit hard to believe that a government could actually come to the conclusion that raising animals just for this purpose would be more viable, resource-wise than just using the water for something else. I feel like, overall, this is an interesting premise that has the potential to be explored further.
@MyFedoraАй бұрын
@@redrisley I think the game’s messaging misses the mark. If you removed all the propaganda, what you’d really have is a debate that boils down to smth like: “If you oppose using animals to secure water, then go ahead and let yourself starve to death to save a few animals, but don’t drag us and our families down with you.” The problem is that in a survival scenario like this, it’s not a matter of luxury or overconsumerism, it’s literally life or death. I doubt anyone with a bit of common sense (barring extreme idealists or masochists) would say no to using animals if it meant staying alive. Every type of government, whether representative or direct democracy, would opt for this choice without hesitation. It’s a short-term, mid-term, and long-term necessity to keep humanity from collapsing. It’s a shame because the game could’ve explored this concept more effectively. Instead of framing it as the use of animal life, imagine it was about instigating wars and human corpses being repurposed for water. Now that would hit different. Unfortunately, it tries to conflate killing animals for survival with wasteful overconsumerism, which is not only misleading but reduces the real moral dilemma to an oversimplified version of itself.

It is not, is a game about uncontrolled consumption, that in a way, can be the antithesis of sustainable consumption which in no way means "veganism is the only way", food production in the current day general food system, is, indeed, unsustainable, but ALL food production CAN be sustainable with the appropriate application of agroecological production models and a change in the systemic structure of societies.

You just heard the person in the video use the word vegan and your brain couldn't help itself from parroting the exact opposite from what they were saying. Or the game asked you a question and the only answer that you could find was the "V" word. Who knows how you assumed that, but I know you're assuming a lot friend. Don't worry, it's art in my opinion. Art is a good place to face assumptions
