Aminah L. Ahmad (formerly Llanchie Stevenson) was America's first African-American ballerina performing at the Radio City Music Hall and also in the Dance Theatre of Harlem before her acceptance to Islam. She relates her experience in the ballet world as an African American and what led her to becoming a Muslim.

I was moved by this story until I heard that she stopped dancing due to a belief that God wouldn't want her to dance. I found that sad. I am a ballet dancer and I have a strong belief in God. God gave me an ability to do something beautiful so why would I hide that? That's not going against God, but with God. The arts are truly a gift from God.

bluedance lilly, there is no need to be sad for this sister, the choice was hers and she lives well with it daily. There is no telling where she would be if she hadn’t chosen the path that she did, or more importantly, if God had not chosen it for her. Muslims believe that the ultimate focus is the hereafter. That this life is temporary, so the product of the choices that are made is one that will bring happiness in this life and the hereafter. What should make anyone sad reading this is the way that she was discriminated against as an African American, made to sit out of performances, and made to feel less than because of her color. Her choices afterward brought forth her marriage, her children, her grandchildren, and the many lives that she touched…one of them being mine through being my son’s teacher! :) The way I see it, she has had the experience of both worlds, but chose to submit wholeheartedly to her Lord. This should never ever make anyone sad…ever. Take care, and may God bless you with all that is good.

I enjoyed her story very much. She never said she gave up dancing, just dancing publicly in the company of strange men. She appears to be a very happy person to me. She married and has six beautiful children and their educated. The - How to eat to Live book has some good things in it. For one; 95% of your food should be plant-based. Eat your largest meal at breakfast, a mid-sized lunch, and small dinner. Stop eating when you're 80% full. If you need to snack, make it a piece of fruit or handful of nuts. Cook most of your meals at home and eat with friends and family as much as possible.

Jesus Christ would’ve said “ keep going my child.” As long as you don’t love ballet more than him meaning ; putting ballet first, he would’ve helped you continue your future in ballet. Ballet is not about showing your body in a sexual manner. You are not showing off your body for men , it’s not a strip club . I believed she gave up too easily. I respect her decision though and her belief. I just wish she Would’ve continue.

She spoke with such bravery when recounting her rejection by Balanchine. I don't think it is profane for a woman to dance. Men need to be accountable for their thoughts. I cringe at anyone who tells a girl she can't do something because it shows her body. So unfair.

You got that totally right. Each of us has our unique intimacy with God and that intimacy is life itself. Because of limited stamina, dance could only be a personal heaven. But I have TASTED the fruit of this endeavor, twice stunning very small audiences with two pieces I choreographed. My soul spoke its native language and I have that forever. May every soul taste its perfect expression just once. Then we know it can happen.

I used to care for an elderly black woman. She was tiny, and had trouble walking but still very graceful in her movements. She told me about her youth, the daughter of a Baptist preacher in the south. She wasn’t allowed to listen to the radio growing up, and she & her siblings were not allowed to attend social events with dance. But she said she still liked music and dreamt of running away to the city to dance. She did too! She was also successful. She danced for some years. Eventually though, she said she missed home and wanted to get married. So she wrote her father asking if she could come home. He welcomed her back, and later she encouraged her children to love music & dance.

Your big toe nail comes off quite often, if u gain weight u might lose ur job so eating disorders r common. Forget about having kids. She choose to leave ballet and i am proud of her. What a heroine……it is terrible to hear the racism that the ballet companys' directors used as execrable "excuses" for why this amazing woman could NOT be a dancer. Agh. It is a bad thing. I don't get the missing brain cells that get a person to think this way--I am glad that Ms. Ahmad has finally found some kind of peace. I disagree about the whole (not dancing and being uncovered) dancing before men. I expect that there was also a great relief in not having to prove yourself over and over and over and over again. Thank you for opening yourself up about your dance career and about your spiritual practice.

It’s so funny how so many people are deciding for her that she should have continued dancing- ignoring her personal decision as a clearly strong and clever woman; taking her choice away from her and belittling it; and at the same time blaming religion for doing the same thing
@photios4779

Fair enough. What she does (or doesn't do) with her life is entirely her choice. But it's not unreasonable to express a bit of regret (which is not "deciding for her") that she stopped using her amazing God-given talent. She said in the video that, "listening to the teachings....that women don't perform in front of men." It's also not unreasonable to ask if those teachings are universally accepted tenets of Islam, or whether they only reflect a particular conservative, male-dominated, point of view. Today there are practicing Muslims who participate in ballet dancing such as the Australian Muslim convert Stephanie Kurlow and an Egyptian woman named Engy El Shazly. So I'm going to express a bit more regret that she may have made her choice without having been exposed to other interpretations of her Islamic religion that aren't so strict regarding women and the performing arts. Had this been the case, perhaps she would have continued performing as a Muslim.

@@photios4779 Perhaps so, nonetheless we may still recognise that God recognises and knows the fullest extents of the depths of choices we make (to an "atoms' weight"), so her choice in faith would return to her on equal measure, perhaps even transcending it entirely in Time and Life. The Quran itself has amasses of assurances for those who favour the Eternal over the temporary. True though that ballet as an art form and talent may be a blessing that links us to God's favour, but nonetheless her choice is entirely accounted for, and the stream of her life continues too (with that critical decision) under the knowledge of "the Best of Planners" (8:30)

I attended Carmen de Lavallade's 2016 performance at the Wallis Theatre in Beverly Hills, after which they celebrated her birthday in the lobby. She's still stunningly beautiful. I recall an early '60's article in Vogue or Bazaar celebrating the world's 100 most beautiful women and she was one of them. I was watching a movie on TV in the very early '60's entitled, "Demetrius and the Gladiators" (1954) with Victor Mature, Susan Hayward, Jay Robinson as the mad emperor, Caligula, and William Marshall as Glycon, the gladiator and later a Roman Decurion. My dad identified de Lavallade in one of the scenes in which she played one of Susan Hayward's (Messalina) handmaidens.

I agree with the comments that says that she threw away her career for a religion. But part of me thinks that she was just using joining Islam as an excuse to get out because she was not happy with her career. I'm surprised I never heard of this dancer before, given my particular interest in African heritage dancers and other artists in ballet. A very interesting story of a clearly quite talented lady. I do find it a bit sad that she gave up ballet so relatively early, but she found something in Islam and family life that made it worth doing so, so I'm happy for her in that. I must say that my experience in professional dance was different, regarding friendships, camaraderie and a feeling of belonging to a 'tribe,' but that difference may well (likely does) stem, to some degree, from issues of race, as well as varying cultures in different companies. I can imagine that, wonderful as Arthur Mitchell and his work were, in many ways, he probably did not foster exactly a consistently warm, family kind of spirit in his company. He (and he's certainly not the only one like this) could be a very harsh, even cold master, even beyond the tendency that exists towards that in the discipline of ballet. I do NOT mean to say that that was the only side to him--clearly it was not--but it could be very harsh, when it came to the fore. I love hearing that two of my great Ballets Russes heroes, Marc Platt and Freddie Franklin, gave her jobs and opportunities, when so many others would not. That makes sense, given the impression I have of them both. Anyway, great thanks to the honored Ms. Ahmad, for sharing this with us.

This woman has a dedication most of us could only hope to possess. Her goal changed from dance to the the afterlife. Her dedication to the afterlife and her new goal is what she sacrificed for, your shame on the matter doesnt make a difference. Especially since few of us could possess enough strength as her. That's not shameful, its inspiring to make sacrifices for what's important. I can relate to her. Perhaps not to her professional level, I'm truly gifted at art. I have been most of my life to a high level, with people and animals being my forte. When I decided to stop as my religion teaches not to attempt to mimic the creation of God by drawing beings such as animals and humans, I stopped. It took time as I didnt want to disappoint people, and I truly loved to draw but I have, Alhamdulillah, by God's help. In fact it became easy. I firmly believe that if someone possesses a talent that might be used to go against the teachings of God, it's a test. Everyone has their tests, and this is one of mine. So it's a shame for me to see someone only scrapping the surface of someone's sacrifice and making negative comments on it. This woman is an inspiration.

The life we all live here is just as important as our "potential eternal life" The pain & disappointment we suffer here are just as real as the "potential eternal life". Why dismiss our reality for life after death, when none of us can ever be sure of what truly happens to us after we shed our bodies? I will never get it. For all we know GOD or Allah may never even exists, or maybe they are just a bunch of Greek Gods using us humans to fight their battles and entertain themselves, who knows?!!!

lady stalker You might not believe in the value or wisdom of her sacrifice but she does and we all have to make compromises in life. In Islam we believe whatever you give up for the sake of God he will give you something better in return. There were many people who became popular and rich singers and dancers but they were still unfulfilled and ended up dying of drug addiciton or suicide. Maybe they experienced fleeting happiness in these hobbies but it didn't give them a sense of peace and purpose. This sister felt conviction in her decision to quit dancing and she's still content with that choice, she has no regrets there. It's unfortunate some people can't respect that because they just want her to entertain them at the cost of her integrity and conscience.

This is pretty sad. If she'd grown up in the religion and culture that she converted to, she'd never have been allowed to be a dancer, but would have learned at a very young age that exposing her legs to public view is somehow sinful. And if she has a daughter who wants to be a dancer as badly as she did, well, too bad.
@yvonnestrong3856
@yvonnestrong3856 6 жыл бұрын
Um, no, I just responded to her interpretation of it because that's what affects her and the people around her. She's not going to encourage girls to become belly dancers if her interpretation is that women need to be covered and not to expose their limbs in public. And I do think it's sad, because she derived so much joy and fulfillment herself from her dancing career. This has nothing to do with Islam in particular - I'd be saying the same thing about a dancer who converted to any version of any religion which required her to give up her dancing career.

It's not about winning world heart, it's about winning our Lord's heart. Hijab is not a barrier of doing something. But embracing Islam thoroughly means you wear hijab, you do all the commands and avoid the forbidden activities. Muslim women are pearls, we are prevented to do something harming our dignity. Getting strange man staring our body is not a remedy, it is an insult to us, women in faith. Also, whatever the reason to not doing this, it is Allah's privilege to instruct us to not to. It is Allah's aim to protect us, and we know that God Knows anything. He created us and He knows how to make us honorable by ruling us perfectly. Hope you learn more about our Glorious Creator to get know why we can live peacefully with His System.

She said in the video that, "listening to the teachings....that women don't perform in front of men." What she was actually listening to were conservative male scholars _interpreting_ her religion for her. Today there are practicing Muslims who are ballerinas or are training to become one, such as the Australian Muslim convert Stephanie Kurlow and an Egyptian woman named Engy El Shazly. They don't believe that ballet dancing conflicts with their faith in Allah.

@thaqafahstyle

ngyardhas ngyardhas why is it oppression to listen to men exactly? What’s wrong with it? If you agree and see the reasoning in the issue that is prohibited or you know that you have to accept certain manners and beliefs according to said religion then why is it an issue if a sound minded person made that choice? I love manly men and not feminized men who let women walk al over them and do whatever she please like a little wimp. The feminist movement created a bunch of ungrateful disgusting competition hungry women, who will never be equal to men in physical strength nor in stature. The men have always and will forever rule the world so that’s why they let women run their mouths and complain about equality because they know that women are no threat to their position. Just like blacks get away with saying the most racial stuff in this country because whites know that they have the power and that they have oppressed them but, hey let them let off some steam because it’s nothing they can do about it.

Interesting story. I'm puzzled as to why she brushed over the thought of dancing at 17 with the revolutionary Alvin Ailey (rip). She was in a premier position to be a change agent. Her story is not unlike that of Josephine Baker, but I am curious what she could've become, what impact she could've had had she learned to balance her religion and her passion. We might've seen the first Muslim ballerina. We see it now in fencing! Too bad

Btw there is no Islamic country that has democracy and basic human rights for its citizens. This reality is scarier than horror movies. And it becomes even worse when Muslims try to change western politics by undermining democracy, human rights and democratic values with their votes against democracy, equality and freedom.

This woman has a dedication most of us could only hope to possess. Her goal changed from dance to the the afterlife. Her dedication to the afterlife and her new goal is what she sacrificed for, your sadness on the matter doesnt make a difference. Especially since few of us could possess enough strength as her. That's not sad, its inspiring to make sacrifices for what's important. I can relate to her. Perhaps not to her professional level, I'm truly gifted at art. I have been most of my life to a high level, with people and animals being my forte. When I decided to stop as my religion teaches not to attempt to mimic the creation of God my drawing brings such as animals and humans, I stopped.

The only difference is that we believe he is a prophet and not God's son. There are chapters in the Quran that are named after Jesus's mother "Mariam" and another one named after his family "Al-Emran" that speaks about Mariam's mother and the birth of Jesus. If you read those chapters you will fall in love with Jesus all over again and the message he was sent to deliver to his people. This comment section has taught me many things: 1. White people hate every stereotype of the world but their own. They hate blacks, Muslims, Jews, Asians etc. 2. Black people who are Christians are some of the people applauding Aminah for her story, her success and her choices in life unlike the white people who are disappointed for her choice of Islam and are hating on her and her religion meanwhile forcing Christianity through everyone's throats just like they did to the natives and blacks. 3. By force feeding people's brain with the notion that Jesus is the only path towards life, you white folks are making Christianity appear cheap and spreading the disease of superiority, quite reminiscent of what the WASP have done in history. 4. Blacks are far more humble and supportive, meanwhile the racism from the white folks shines through. 5. This attitude in the comment section gives me more ideas about how tough the history of the blacks in America has been. Sincerely An Asian Indian woman Have a good evening...
