To insure the safety of the workers, the management would occasionally cross their fingers or knock on wood.

Amazing that all those plants, machines & tools were all hand designed. No Cad Cam, no simulations. I suspect a lot of slide rule work and and a fair bit of "Try this, it outtta work."

Got to enjoy seeing how well things were set up and run back then. Worked on a copper mine many years ago and it was heap leach process. Never want to work with acid ever again.

@@skyportal nasty stuff. Seen first hand what it would do to the environment when the concentrate (ILS) channels would overflow into the surrounding bushland. Glad you're out of too.

Fascinating! I've been a student of western mining history ever since I grew up exploring the ruins of the old Treadwell gold mine complex near Juneau, AK. Our area had some of the largest hard rock gold mines of their eras and I've always wished I'd been able to see the mining process in action. Much of the mining techniques shown in this film are very similar to underground gold mining of those times. Thanks every so much for finding and posting this historic film.

Amazing process. Green tree poles added into the melted copper! ? Thanks for the upload. I had not considered how patriotic copper mining could be.

What is called “reform gas” replaced the green poles. This is partially burned natural gas which is blown into the molten copper to remove the oxygen. Today at Freeport’s Miami Smelter, they steam for the same purpose

My kin before me worked for Phelps Dodge. My dad up until recently hauled copper products from Arizona to Texas, though a lot of it is coming from Mexico and headed to TX for further processing.

is this a mining facility where the chunks of copper were being drag by ice glacier movement? from the mining facilities to urban area 600 miles away?

Good thing these films are not widely shown today. If the bloggers saw this, all mining would have to be stopped immediately, and all previous products of mining would need to be taken out of service, and all people involved would need to be fired and have their publications pulled from production. Of course, you can't have a computer or a phone without copper, so I suppose they will have to find another way to spread their diseases.
