Wallace Henry Hartley (2 June 1878 - 15 April 1912) was an English violinist and bandleader on the RMS Titanic on its maiden voyage. He became famous for leading the eight member band as the ship sank on 15 April 1912. He died in the sinking.
After the Titanic hit an iceberg and began to sink, Hartley and his fellow band members started playing music to help keep the passengers calm as the crew loaded the lifeboats. Many of the survivors said that he and the band continued to play until the very end. None of the band members survived the sinking, and the story of them playing to the end became a popular legend. One survivor who clambered aboard 'Collapsible A' claimed to have seen Hartley and his band standing on the boat deck, near the entrance to the grand staircase, near the base of the second funnel. He went on to say that he saw three of them washed off while the other five held on to the railing on top the Grand Staircase's deckhouse, only to be dragged down with the bow, as Hartley exclaimed, "Gentlemen, I bid you farewell!" A newspaper at the time reported "the part played by the orchestra on board the Titanic in her last dreadful moments will rank among the noblest in the annals of heroism at sea."
Though the final song played by the band is unknown, "Nearer, My God, to Thee" has gained popular acceptance. Former bandmates claimed that Hartley had said he would play either "Nearer, My God, to Thee" or "O God, Our Help in Ages Past" if he were ever on a sinking ship, but Walter Lord's book A Night to Remember (1955) popularised wireless officer Harold Bride's account of hearing the song "Autumn". If it were "Nearer, My God, to Thee", it is uncertain which version Hartley used. His father used the "Propior Deo" version, by Arthur Sullivan, at church, and his family were certain that he would have used that version,[4] It is this tune's opening notes that appear on Hartley's memorial[5] and that were played at his funeral.[4]
After the sinking Edit
Hartley's body was recovered by the Mackay-Bennett almost two weeks after the sinking. Several press reports confirmed that Wallace was found "fully dressed with his music case strapped to his body".[6]
He was transferred to the Arabic and returned to England. Hartley's father Albion met the ship at Liverpool and brought his son's body back to his home town of Colne, Lancashire. The funeral took place on 18 May 1912. One thousand people attended Hartley's funeral, while an estimated 30,000 - 40,000 lined the route of his funeral procession.[3]
Hartley is buried in the Keighley Road cemetery, Colne, where a 10 feet (3.0 m) high headstone, containing a carved violin at its base, was erected in his honour.
A memorial to Hartley, topped by his bust, was erected in 1915 outside what was then the town library. The memorial is inscribed: Wallace Hartley
Bandmaster of the RMS Titanic who perished in the foundering of that vessel, April 15th 1912. Erected by voluntary contributions to commemorate the heroism of a native of this town.
This was later moved slightly to make way for the World War One memorial. Hartley's large Victorian terraced house in West Park Street, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, bears a blue plaque to remind passers-by that this was the bandleader's home.[3]
In 2001, Hartley's name was still being used when naming new streets and housing in the town of Colne. In 2008, the pub chain J D Wetherspoon named a newly opened pub, (the building having been the long-standing King's Head Hotel up until the mid-1990s),[7] in Colne after the bandleader.[8]

Fact: The violinists knew that the crew needed life boats so they stayed on the Titanic to play this song for the last time. The engineers were still in the ship trying to make it afloat for as long as possible. These people are real heroes even if they aren't mentioned in our history the world still remembers them

"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." (John 15:13). Wallace Hartley and band members played beyond the sinking of the Titanic. They played as they entered Heaven and played as each was praised for his earthly deeds. They play for us now as they continue to touch all those who recount their singular act of heroism.

darin darine quite a lot of the passengers of titanic just accepted their fate and didn’t try to get on to life boats once they seen almost all of them gone. There’s another scene in titanic where the guy said “we will go down like men” that was also true. He didn’t want to get in a life boat and be seen a coward so went down with the ship.

Easily one of them. I cannot choose - this, the old couple or the mother with her children. The hardest three. But somehow - as a violinist respect I feel for Hartley is immeasurable. And the fact that he held his case when his body was found - I'm speechless.

This took place more then 100 years ago and this music has always put goose bumps all over my body. I don’t claim to understand music or what the message is, but there is a message and only from the heart will you be able to understand it. Not all is what it seems. In the end it’s not about individualism. It’s about the people around you.

I have heard this hymn played and sung many many times but I can't believed my eyes flooded with tears, when I saw the Titanic scene! When nothing else could calm the fearful passengers Wallace Hartley (May His Soul Rest In Peace.) created that peace, joy in sorrow and comfort even when faced with the reality of inevitable death, which he had within himself and we can have the same even during this difficult year. Probably one of the most touching scenes I have seen yet...

Here we go again...goosebumps..:/ really, men of honor..and i don't know why is this sad sorrowful music..just so good?? It's like all the emotions of all the people there, young, adult and the old, feeling that they're together in their last hours...also when they turn and he starts playing, and they come back..i mean waw, this scene was one of the best ones in the whole movie for me personally. I can't hold my tears, while thinking how they had to come to terms with their fate and just go ahead and play that beautiful yet sad music, knowing it was their end, yet finding peace in the fact that they are together till the end. And that old couple shown for few seconds if you remember from the movie, where they lie in bed, waiting to be swallowed by water...everything put together, I would willingly give my life for these unknown sorrowful people. It just wasn't right. Just wasn't. Also when you go digging about it, you find hints about being an inside job.. something about politics.. dunno anyways, but if it's true I truly, truly hope that the people responsible suffer in hell each day, each second.

what happened, or did happen, became a legend, dreams of a better world went down with this ship, I also think that this ship should never have been entered, no matter what treasures have been found, it is a cemetery and cemeteries are not plundered, so it was always a legend, each of these people who died should rest in peace and not because of porcelain dishes, In my dreams, the orchestra still plays this melody, the Titanic, which is something mystical, mysterious, very sad, and yet it has become a legend. May the dead rest in peace and find their way to heaven, may God feed you at His table and let the orchestra play, but teach us humans not to capitalize on this death. ....

Featured in this video is the actual violin used by Wallace Hartley to play the song as the ship went down. He didn't survive but the violin did. It was stashed in its suitcase and was handed to Hartley's fiance. She kept it until her death and it was passed on. Only recently, like 2013 ish or so, the violin came to light.
