Wasn’t the mother also so important in this story as she told her son the truth and probably gave him the best possible gift of a truthful early life. Despite whatever she may have faced it seems like her role in his life cannot be minimized.

True but what difference would it have made had she lied about it ? Satyakama was honest by his very nature or else he won't have been so frank about the nature of his birth in the first place. Thus he is the main importance of this story.

Maaji, Gouthama never tells sathyakama to return ashram after 400 cows multiply into 1000. He just asks him to follow 400 cows. It is sathyakaama who tell himself that let me return, only after these 400 cows become 1000 ones. Namaste.
