Story Saturday: when a customer tried to trick me

It Just upset me that she couldn’t on up to her mistake and tell me but instead try to trick me so that I can make the cake for her. So yes, I put her on the do not take Cake list 😂

Right? Like courtesy and taking responsibility for yourself goes a long way. Like “Hey Mimo, we made a mistake and the wedding got moved up and we’re wondering if you are still available, and if not, is there someone who you can recommend?” It’s like they don’t even care that Mimo’s time is valuable too. And not just her time, but her sanity. Yeah they totally deserve to be on the list. It’s the “I dodged a bullet.” List. Those kinds of people don’t deserve to be repeat customers.

That's unprofessional of her. She should have contacted you immediately when the date changed. No cakes for her period. And I'm sure she has done this to others. Cake decorators and businesses should have a shared blacklist and reasons why so no one can be stressed out by these entitles people. Screenshots are your best friend.

I think blacklists as a whole would cause a lot of division but letting your caking friends know is very different! Also a warning could be like "this person lied about the dates, I lost x amount of money BC they tried to blame me for their mistake. If you choose to work with them get a large non-refundable deposit!" Vs a "no soup for you" list 🤷‍♀️

Wow. I can’t believe someone would try to do that! I was a wholesale florist in California in the early 2000s and I had a mother of the bride try to withhold returning $3000 worth of rented silver candelabras (which I had rented for the event to accommodate the bride) because she “thought the flowers wilted too fast “ even though she was warned an outdoor event in direct sunlight in Sacramento, CA could be 86-104 degrees and they signed the contract acknowledging cut Flowers don’t last long in that environment. Her mom worked for a lawyer and tried to Threaten me if I didn’t comp The entire $6k wedding. My dad worked for the state of California as a commissioner and had many lawyer friends and my brother was chief of police so we all converged on the law office where she worked (it was her request to meet there to resolve things) thinking a 23 year old florist would just bend and take things and nope! She was reprimanded when a lawyer in the office she worked for saw what was happening and saw the signed contract with the disclaimer and told her she would be arrested for felony theft if she chose not to return the candelabras and we left with all of the candelabras and the balance owed for the flowers, which I had photographed after set up at the event in perfect condition. Photographs are SO important for reasons like these! Way to go on looking out for yourself Mimo!

You know what, you are absolutely right. Because if she was honest with me, I would’ve definitely found a way to help her out. Maybe not make something so extravagant, but definitely tried to get some thing similar for her using edible sheet toppers, cutting down on the size of the cake, and instead of making puffy clouds, I would just make them flat. Like I genuinely would’ve felt bad and tried to help her out. But because she blatantly lied and tried to put the blame on me, I felt no sympathy whatsoever.

Aahh, memories. I used to sell made to order window treatments, and I had to learn that when customers choose to provide their window measurements themselves I needed to take a photocopy or photograph of the measurements for my records. I'm sure it saved my employer thousands of dollars over the years and who knows, maybe it even kept me from losing my job.

And the funny thing is, has she told me she moved the date and I really needed it for that weekend, I would’ve figured something out for her. Do you take deposits? If so in a case like this do you return the deposit since the order was "canceled" due to deception/lies? Or return since you hadn't invested in it? Wondering BC technically you lost money bc they failed to change the date with you and therefore a big order was lost

Would it be helpful to have them fill out a form and sign it so you have a proof that it was information that they gave you and as an added bonus, you can attach the Instagram screenshot to that form for your record. This information will also be automatically populated in a calendar so you never get confused or doubt yourself.
