HOW TO USE ARROWS IN A STORYBOARD
Take a look at most storyboards, and you’ll quickly notice a recurring shape: the arrow. Arrows help storyboards overcome their primary shortcoming when planning out shots. Storyboards are still images. Movies are moving images- it’s in the name. Today, we break down the use of arrows in storyboards while showing you how to create them in StudioBinder’s storyboard software.
WHAT DO ARROWS MEAN IN A STORYBOARD
An arrow in a storyboard doesn’t mean that the camera will be filming an arrow on set. An arrow represents movement. First and foremost, arrows can indicate the movement of the camera. If you’re trucking from left to right, you can use an arrow pointing left to right. If you’re craning down, you can use an arrow to crane down. If you’re tilting or panning, you can use curved arrows that represent the camera is simply pivoting.
But what about more complicated camera movements, like a dolly-zoom? Fear not, arrows have you covered. For a dolly-zoom, you use an arrow pointing forward into the frame, with four arrows in the corners of the frame pointing out. These four arrows indicate zooming.
STORYBOARD ARROWS MOVEMENT
Arrows don’t just have to represent camera movement. They can also indicate the movement of a character. To do this, simply have the arrow begin at the character and point to where the character is headed. It’s as easy as that.
With all these different meanings that can be ascribed to arrows, it may not be totally clear what an arrow is indicating. If this is the case, you can always label the arrow. Want to make sure the reader knows your arrow means crane down? Write “Crane.”
Storyboards are crucial for the prepared filmmaker. And if you’re not planning on having totally stationary cameras and subjects, arrows are a crucial part of storyboards.
