The problem I'm currently having storyboarding in Blender is that I don't really see how it's faster than drawing out every panel and shot by hand in something like Storyboard Pro or even Procreate. I do a lot of action scenes and storyboard very long tracking shots and the vast majority of these can be thumbnailed and timed in roughly 1-2 hours max when using storyboard pro. At an average drawing time per panel ranging from 20-45 seconds, I just really don't see or feel a need for Blender. Most of the positives I hear about using Blender deal with the fact that you can do complicated 3D camera work; but in all honesty that seems to just double or triple the amount of time it takes to do a scene like that. Yes, the camera can move in 3D, but drawing that said camera move in 2D is a lot faster and visually more consistent. Half of the storyboards I see done in Blender look very janky and the timing/movement doesn't feel like an improvement over 2D usually because most storyboard artists don't have time to learn very fine camera movement skills. I'm still trying to learn Grease Pencil better and find a use for it, but right now it just seems like a much slower and more complicated way to do something.

I remember watching this video and it helped a lot but one thing I can't seem to find anywhere is how people draw their pieces to scale seemingly with no anchors. I get how line work solidifies the sketch but during the sketching process all you have is the canvas, 3D shapes and the grid to guide you. Being able to integrate 3D should help but it presents its own set of hurdles. I have a rigify armature as reference and when I add a cube to make a building, all I got was a room instead.

Great video, really helpful! Quick tip on the grease pencil modifiers. You can just apply to the first grease pencil object, then select all the other objects, select the first object again and select "copy to selected" from the drop down next to the little camera icon on the blur modifier

The line between storyboard and animatic is so blurry now! Having those capabilities there is very handy, tho.

@@gernotkinzel8146 client-side, when they ask for a storyboard, adding limited animation is sometimes part of the deal. A straight sequence of stills is not really presentable, so we jump directly to boarding for the purposes of making an animatic.

Thanks for this video and all the great videos you do. I have a question: I can definitely see the usefulness of this, and the usefulness of the story pencil add-on. Unless I’m wrong because I just don’t know enough yet (which is definitely possible), story pencil seems to be more for Blender’s 2D animator mode and not really much to do with the 3D views or for use of grease pencil in conjunction with 3D meshes and environments? I hope I’m wrong because I can totally see the benefits of both approaches, so I’m wondering if the capability exists within Blender to combine them. Does it, and if so, do you know of any tutorials about that?

I am very much looking forward to taking the upcoming course mentioned in the video. I checked CG Cookie just now and it seems it is still in production as the Animation\2d filter presently does not return any courses. Actually hoping extensive and comprehensive Grease Pencil courses appear as soon as possible as it looks like such a rich creative solution compared to the animation applications I have used up to now. On a side note it’s just such a shame one of them (clip studio) is leaving so much potential on the table by not providing more robust animation features. I’d be ecstatic to just create my assets in Clip Studio and Creative Suite and just cart them over to Grease Paint to take advantage of its amazing features. Any idea his soon the Grease Pencil Courses will be available?

You wouldn't happen to have a tutorial on how to transition from Storyboard Pro to Blender, would you? I'm trying to introduce a long time (and STILL full time) Hollywood pro to Blender, I'm 3D and fairly proficient and 2D is just out of my wheelhouse.
