I've been teaching my students about this story for several years. There are very few videos discussing the empires of middle age Africa. Of the videos that are available, they are of low quality monotone/boring, and/or don't quite this epic in depth. This video will not only help my students draw parallels between the historical and Disney versions, but also engage them and hold their attention. Thank you for this.

Do you know the channel Extra Credits? They have a series of five episodes about Mali Empire and they tell this story. They have simple but gret animations and the videos are funny to watch so are great for educative purposes.

Disney could have at least made a reference to Sundiata Keita. My whole life I’m thinking the Lion King, etc. was created by Walt Disney

Disney did found out about Sundiata eventually, and said it's mostly inspired by Hamlet. When I heard about Lion King being a "live action" I will admit I got excited and hoped that it will be about Sundiata, but that didn't happened. I tried telling people about Sundiata Keita, but people kept saying it's Hamlet this and Hamlet that. I even tried to tell people about it in Jon Solo's video about the Messed up Origins in Lion King when he only talked about Hamlet and Jungle Emperor: Leo (Kimba the White Lion), but this one commenter kept telling me that I was just angry for the sake of angry and asked why Disney should acknowledged Sundiata and this commenter kept telling me that a lot of stories were based on Hamlet and I'm like, Sundiata Keita's story was older than Hamlet, what the hell are you talking about?! It's sad that some people refused to acknowledged that there is an actual African story not only older than Hamlet, but they kept telling me they're true Lion King fans. If they're true Lion King fans, then they should be full aware of this story and let people know the true origin of Lion King.

@@moe5020 If due credit isn't given, then its treaso--I mean appropriation . Especially when euros take it and afterwards treat it like one of "their" stories. Another example is the Lone Ranger, who was most likely based on Bass Reeves a freed man who arrested 3,000+ criminals and never got hit by a single bullet. If this is done on a cultural scale, then its cultural appropriation. It literally happens all the time in America. It wouldn't be so much of a problem if the average American wasn't so ignorant about history.

@@StoryDive I'm glad you addressed the elephant in the room, because there are two major factors that makes the Lion King different from Jungle Emperor Leo. 1. Jungle Emperor Leo focused more on the title character having humans be part of the main plot, because his father died trying to save his wife from hunters while she was pregnant. 2. Kimba is not a male name, and Simba is not derived from Kimba; this is the major thing I wanna talk about. The biggest issue with this conspiracy comes in two things. For one thing, the title character is actually called Leo in the original Japanese. The other is that if they were to change his name in the US, and the male equivalent name should be Kimball (Kimba is actually a feminine name), and that the name Kimball, defined by Old Celtics as "leader of men", works in the context of the series, as I hear the White Lion took ideas from humans to rebuild his kingdom as the 1960s TV series progressed; because like Sundita, Leo has learned many things from humans about War, Peace, and Rulership. Oh yeah, and the word Simba is a pre-existing Swahili word meaning "Lion".

This was great, I really enjoyed learning more about the origins of the original African myth. When the Lion King animated movie was first previewed I immediately thought of Kimba the White Lion which I watched in the 60s as a kid ( along with Astro Boy, Marine Boy, Speed Racer & Prince Planet- all Japanese cartoons shown on local UHF stations in the late 60s in northern California) I recognized the art of the Dillons as soon as I saw it, now I want that book as much for the illustrations as the story. Is it still in print, can you give me the full title so I can look for it? Thank you in advance 😊

I feel like Lion King would be inspired, but Jungle Emperor? No. Not really. Tezuka most likely never heard of Sundiata, since the main inspiration for Jungle Emperor was actually Bambi, and the series takes more inspiration from that, since Leo's father, Panja, was killed by a hunter, not by another lion.

Great video! Yes, Sundiata Keita's epic was Disney's main inspiration for making the Lion King! Other sources were also used of course ^^ However, the Epic of Sundiata was by far the main inspiration for the movie. But of course Disney wouldn't tell anyone that, because of two reasons: 1) Sundiata Keita is African. 2) Sundiata was a Muslim. Due to its prejudice against Muslims and black people, Disney didn't tell the truth about the Lion King, instead they lied and said it was about Hamlet.
