Since I have read the novel, I tried my best to detach myself from Sweeney because in the novel he also died an undeserving and not so glorious death too. But it was still so difficult because the actor did a damn good job on making the character so likeable and amusing.

I like that it is a far more dignified death for Mad Sweeney than in the book. In the book he basically died at around this point, except in the scene where Shadow found him in the beginning. Basically a drunkard who died of exposure. I can see that they needed to kill him off in order to keep the plot in similar directions as the book, but they gave him a more proper send off.

Lugh is a Sun-God, so part of his being is to die and resurrect as a sacrificial king, some even believe that the death and resurrection of Jesus was 'borrowed' from existing sun god myths. It's therefore fairly likely that Sweeney will return. I'm not certain but I think there was reference earlier in the series of the need for a sacrifice before the war started. Odin started wars by throwing his spear Gungnir over the field of battle. I don't know if the death of Sweeney counts as the spear being thrown but I would be very surprised if Wednesday didn't manipulate the whole thing. The thing that I noticed with Bilquist was that the verses she quoted were from the Song of Solomon, which some believe were written for the Queen of Sheba, i.e. Bilquist herself. This was an excellent episode, as a Celtic reconstructionist, seeing the portrayal of Lugh's battle with the Fomorian's was amazing (by the way, I was taught to pronounce his name with a long 'U' sound - 'Loo' and not 'Lug' - and I think this is the Irish pronunciation). Also, Sweeney's fragmentary memory may be referring to the plethora of different accounts within Irish mythology, which make it hard to organise it into any kind of timeline.

@@lamontcranston1716 I have read the book. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of Neil Gamain's writing style so it didn't make that much of an impression. Gamain came from the comic book genre originally and I would say that this is why his ideas transfer so much better to a visual media. However, it all depends how faithful the series intends to be to the book, doesn't it, whether major changes will occur.

This was really great acting by Pablo Schreiber, and I'm glad he had a full episode dedicated to his character and range. Mad Sweeney's death in the book was far more somber and had magical realism - he continued to talk to Shadow as a corpse and Shadow was not at all disturbed that this cadaver talks and then quiets down. Also was not a fan of Mama-ji's form, too fiery and 'small'. I was expecting something large and black, like in the book which is a good reference to Kali's association with time and the cosmos. Really loved the Lugh story though, how Christianity bulldozed the old gods, demoting and weakening them to the point of fairies.

Love Mad Sweeney. Hope he makes a comeback. On another note, I am frustrated that the whole Easter story line from the end of season one has never been addressed. Easter took back spring and was going to leave America without crops so that people would be hungry and have to pray for spring's return. None of that has been addressed other than when Mr. Nancy reminded Wednesday that he (Wednesday) ran over the rabbits.

There is a fairy solid hypothesis that, on the norse side, the whole entire Vanir vs Aesir thing was a war (metaphorical or literal) between the Celtic and Germanic gods during those invasions, which is why nobody east of, like, Normandy seems to talk about "Vanir" at all. That's all I could think about when I watched it. Like, if you told the story from the Celtic gods perspective instead of the norse, it could look an awful lot like that flashback (except that Mr Wednesday is none of the documented sacrifices that ended that war, but again... does it have to be accurate to be true in this moment? It's so hard to know).

They could have also had a very different culture back then, as the Roman's had contact with the Norse tribes, and it is said that they influenced their pantheon of God's, and the runes they right with! It could have been the culture from before the Roman influence that invaded Ireland.

I think sweeny has so many stories because of how the grey monks or catholic church kept changing irish focklore. Sweeny even says it when he is talking to ibis. Sweeny mentions how he was a god and then was turn into a fairy belittled by the grey monks.

Well, it makes sense that Sweeney is a Sun god. He's in constant fight with Shadow Moon whose name justifies the antagony, but he's in love with Moonlight (L-Aura Moon), to whom he literally gave life by a golden disc. The spear can as well represents the sun ray (since he manage to chase to clouds once) or the lightning in Odin's hands (in that case, the Storm god prevents the Sun from shining). This show should have been sponsored by some weather broadcast, shouldn't it?

One thing you missed is another reference to a hanging/death of some sort of Shadow, this time on Yggdrasill. I believe it was a prediction by Sweeney. The trees and hanging symbolism (or outright acts) have been part of Shadow's story since episode one of season one. All leading....somewhere....us book readers can make a guess.

When Sweeney tells his story to Bilquis the tale is extremely sexual in nature. When he tells it to Salim it is wrapped around a great love story about Sweeney and his wife. When he tells it to Ibis it is epic in scope and filled with larger than life battles/conflicts. It was as if the type of tale he was sharing was being determined by the personality and particular interests of the people he was occupying space with.

I honestly wondered how they were going to treat Sweeney's situation. I have read the book, and I think an interesting point to note is that the opening scene is a reference to the way he was killed in the book. I'm glad that he got to die with more dignity in the show. I am a little sad though that my ship of him and Laura will likely never sail. Unless she ends up being properly dead again and joins him in the afterlife or something. I find it interesting that Sweeney died in battle here, impaled by Gungnir. If he doesn't get resurrected in some form, he should by all accounts be going to Valholl. Perhaps not, as a Celtic God going to a Norse afterlife sounds a bit odd and they might just resurrect him, but if he did go to Valholl it would be pretty poetic. Odin's soldier in life, Odin's soldier in death.

@@peterhernandez7817 I agree to an extent, but in GOTs case the death was done well in the book and show. In American Gods case, Sweeny's death in the books wasn't done well, IMO, and they had a chance to improve that in the show.

@MrHootiedean the shadow-laura arc was so much more interesting with mad sweeney. now it's just kinda boring regardless of what the dead girl's motivation is or if shadow takes her back or whatever. also, some of the other gods and goddesses were somewhat not really that engaging, like idc about bilquis at all, and even mr. world isn't a compelling character imo. new media isn't as badass as i'd expected.

Freaking great episode all the way through. I love Kali, I love Sweeney. This was a great ending, I hated it. I can't tell if Odin wanted Sweeney to die and he set that up or if it's just how shit turned out. Sweeney would have beasted in the war.

IMO, this episode is the shining pinnacle of what we currently have in terms of American Gods episodes. Troubled as the shows origins and ongoing writer/producer/show runner/actor disputes may be (really pissed they fired Orlando), this episode was, to me, the “finale” of season 2. Even if he is never resurrected (and I suspect he will be), seeing the frequently drunk and often humiliated “king of the fairies” finally get an origin story, as well as a satisfying “final battle” that he had so long been promised. For someone like Wednesday, for whom instruments of power and insidious plots mean more than those who actually show him allegiance, I could think of no greater blow that to have his precious warspear cast into the hoard, “the suns treasure” :) I expect it season 3 it will be shadow that is tasked/capable of bringing it back, perhaps shadow and Laura together - as the former has heard an explanation of how the hoard “works” (you just have to hold it in your mind) and is clearly magically adept, while the latter has actually been there, as she traveled with Sweeney in season 2.

Lovely vid. I think Sweeney met an apt ending tbh. Pronunciation wasn't too bad either! Except for Lugh Lamhfada. 'Lugh Lamhfada' = Loo-gh Laav-odd-ah. Lamhfada means literally 'long hand'. Fun fact, we still called August 'Lúnasa' in Irish. Lúnasa is often our sunniest month (depending on which side of the country you're in), so it's named after the old god, Lugh.

Little different regarding his parentage: Manannán's father was Lír and was a mentor to Lugh when Lugh joined the Tuatha Dé Danann. Lugh's parentage was the Fomorian Ethniu (daughter of Balor who he was prophesied to kill) and Cian of the Tuatha Dé Danann. Fun fact, he's the father of Cúchulainn, one of Irish Mythologies greatest heroes.

Laura's got some ex-machina's in her possession, and I know Sweeney stays dead in the book, but Laura didn't have that potion in the books and the show has been going in some different directions than the book, so it might not be the END of Sweeney. Especially since they put in that insert of Laura back in Cairo right before the fight.

In the beginning of episode Wednesday says he is his spear Gumnir. Sweeney was killed by that spear. In the season 1 Easter told to Laura she can not be revived, because she was killed by god. So this is probably end of Sweeney

I think the obvious answer to the blood for the potion problem is Samir. He is always talking about love- his love of God, his love for the jin, etc. This was a fantastic episode. I was so happy we got Sweeney's full history finally & that he got one final F you before he died. Much better death than the novel. Best episode of the season ♡

Just when I was starting to like Mad Sweeney he ups and dies. Damn. But I love how he screwed Wednesday of his spear upon dying. I was clapping at that part. Well played, God King Lugh, well played. The best part about it is, now The Remaining Old Gods owe the Banshee a debt like Lugh said, and who knows how that could affect the war! This is getting real juicy!
