Glad that Devika Ma'am opened up about the hierarchy in the system and people's approaches towards the age. Also, it is so unfortunate that places like Kerala University are still unaware about the importance of having a focused space for performing arts and indigenous cultures and plays . Wait is over. First of all thanks wonderwall for choosing a dancer here. A super serious conversation it is. No loose talks very sharp, crisp conversation starters which is addressed by subtle and calm responses that's never vague. The clarity is admirable. But, this is very very disturbing and provoking at this point of time because this session is pointing how the conventional thought process is only aging over time and not changing. In Kerala, yes to step out from the so called 'Normal' academia and start off as an artist is viewed as a threat since ages. It's not only demotivating, but rather driving hopeless. Wonderful episode✨️

I loved the conversation between my favorite dancer Devika and one of my favorite singers Sithara❤❤ I am neither a singer nor a dancer. However, Devika the point that you have discussed here Question Based Learning (should not blindly follow what we already have; learner must think and ask "why"). Western countries follow this practice in academics. In Kerala, when we were students, not all Professors encouraged this. Those days it was “tharkkutharam”😊. If someone ask questions regularly in class, they fail the subject (due to lack of session mark 😊)

I always look forward to this interactive session by Wonderwall media. Sithaara krishnakumaar has proved beyond doubt about her musical acumen. Now as a interviewer, the choice of questions are spontaneous which means she is paying all attention to what is being spoken by the personality on the other side. 👍 This was an intense and extraordinary episode in terms of its content, explanation. This brought out the painful issues pertaining to art and art forms. It explicitly states how divine art and art forms are! But sadly, the state of Kerala turns a blind eye to it resulting in "Brain Drain". All good wishes and blessings to Methil Devika for her dedication, passion and honesty in the noble field she is in. May her tribe increase!

Blessed dancer she is and what she said is absolutely correct. Professional dancers are treated inferior to film stars in Kerala. As Protima Gauri said " a classical dancer becoming a film star is not a step up but many steps down". Sometimes I think the sole purpose of children being trained Classical dances is to grab prices or to enter film industry here. Except for Meera Sreenarayanan i haven't seen a national level dancer emerging from such kalolsavams in Kerala.

Devutty I was pleasently astonished by your open; uninhibited attitude towards value adding changes in the so called traditional arts. For example I have often felt that many teachers and performers of the art are militantly against changes in the existing format. I have always felt that many of them interpret LASYAM as extremely sedantry . Secondly many of the padams (Not of course of Swathi tamburan; Iravivarman and Thangachi) were most pedestrian. I wondered why they did not look towards the Trinity; Narayana theerthar: and. Sangathamizh kavis and certainly Kunjan nambiar for gold quality lyrics. On a few occassions when I ventured to make this suggestion my neck was nearly bitten off. Your argument that everything we have today must have gone through manny changes is most refreshing. The dog in the manger mind frame is one cause for the low recognition level of this delectable art. It has a quiet dignity which is distinctive. I did not discuss it with you because I thought it was forbidden ground. Love. NH uncle.

Good interview. Classical Dance has evolved over a period and is also at the same time corrupted by the new form of dance. I still remember in the 90's when I used to go with my father to Bangalore's Chowdiah Hall to see these dance performances and what I observed then was there were many audiences and at times houseful too. However, in Kerala, do we see such an audience in Kerala....I doubt. Even for that matter, even Malayalam movies too stopped having scripts around classical dance and classical music. So, as Methil says, brain drain in this form of Art is going to be there but we need to do something that can attract the new generation.
