True to a promoters character there are a number of "alternative facts": in this rendition. 1st off Jungle was born in Pennsylvania not Fremont Ca. During his early drag racing career he lived in Fremont briefly but mostly in the San Jose area (just south of Fremont now famous for being the silicone valley) and was a regular at the then Fremont Dragstrip later known as Baylands. Next we ran several Nitro Bowls and a bit contrary they were more often then not cold...overcast...and even wet. The promotion was always good but between hangovers and weather the turnouts were often a bit disappointing but understandable. Next the cutting apart of the VW and welding it to his truck never happened. Cheap German painted steel would have been impossible to fabricate into a F/C fuel tank in a couple hours. Jungle did have a tank issue on a chk out pass...the blower sneezed in the lights at shut off and the line pressure back into the tank split one of the seams and distorted the tank. (actually this was starting to happen pretty frequently with fuel cars back then, happened to ours once as well) NHRA later mandated venting or pressure relief caps on the tanks to prevent this from happening. Porky was able to hammer the tank back into relative shape and weld the seam so Jungle could run. Porky was a fixture at Fremont in those days and back then there were no semi trailers with the implements they have now! So Porky saved a lot of racers asses with being able to do a quick on the spot welding repairs and some fabrication...and he could weld fine when he was intoxicated maybe better than sober!!!. There was more than once after loading up and heading for home or hotel his truck would in the pits with Porky passed out / sound to sleep in the cab. I'm not sure he even actually had a home outside of the racetracks he frequented.

Loved going to Fremont raceway, it only took about 3-4 hours to get out of there after a race, little two la e road going in and out of there.....

I agree with Buttery, where's this picture? I need to see this one! Donner needs to get back into promotions, and make drag racing events interesting again!

I have looked high and low for the real name of porky the pirate. does anyone know if he is still alive?

Passed away YEARS ago. And contrary to Doner's statement that he was a "good welder when he was sober". He was a better welder when he was drunk....and the truth is I doubt his blood alcohol level was ever below the legal limit.
