You have a really kindhearted and wise perspective. I think many in your shoes might've become resentful of everything associated with the Persian side just because of the way your father has not been involved, but you are able to separate that from all the beautiful things that have become open to you because of this discovery. You have a good head on your shoulders!

Salam Khanume Beth, First of all, I'm glad you got to meet your dad. And that you are now getting to know a culture that you are part of. I'm an Iranian that was raised in the West, so I think I can be of help here and there. Some things you may not be aware of, since your dad is Iranian, you are considered "fully iranian" in Iran and in the bureaucracy. That means that you have a right to hold an Iranian passport, ID etc. As a matter of fact, Iranians are required to enter Iran using their Iranian passport (if their name is super Iranian), so if you want to visit Iran at some point, and I recommend it, its best you either go with your british passport, by which you will have to be accompanied in your visit by a tour guide (required for UK and US citizens). Or you can apply for your Iranian passport and go with that to your visit. The first option may be the easiest. Which leads me to the next point, visiting Iran is definitely worth it. At the beginning there may definitely be a culture shock (they are not like the Shah's of Sunset there lol) but eventually you may get to realise its a good culture shock. A nice introduction to Iranian culture is actually Films. You will find many recommendations for iranian films by making a quick search online, but here I can give you a couple such as 'Children of Heaven' and 'Baran'. But the sky is the limit with iranian movies, they truly are something else. Finally, I'd like to give you a heads-up about some Iranians you will meet in the West. I'd say a good 70% of Iranians living in the West are not actually reflective of how 95% of Iranians are in Iran. If you know what I mean. They have been westernised and lowkey dislike being Iranian. This is a complete oposite of the people of Iran. A good source of information therefore may not be the Iranians you meet in the West. But rather the website Quora has some very good iranians living in Iran writing answers about the country there. Including about its history and all in English. Anyway, hope you enjoy your journey. It seems like its just begun so I don't want to overwhelm you. By the way, that inquisitive part of yours that you talk in your video, that's 100% Iranian ;) Yours kindly

omg it was more emotional than I expected😥, so glad that you got in connect with your Iranian roots and culture, our culture is really beautiful and vibrant but unfortunately, it is very conservative as well and your dad being an Iranian immigrant in a relationship with a none Iranian girl was probably not a situation that he would confess to his family and that might be the reason that he was absent in your life, kudos to your Mom for doing an amazing job in raising you alone and never bashing your Persian side, I have heard some same stories from friends as well, either way, I am really happy that you are interested in your roots, you look 100 percent Iranian and absolutely gorgeous! even your make-up and hair color looks like Iranian beauty trends! you could easily walk down the streets of Tehran with that look and get all heads to turn by your Iranian beauty! try to explore our culture on your own, it's in your blood so even if your dad doesn't do his part you have every right to find out who you are, I guess you can easily find out from which part of Iran you are, maybe even travel to Iran sometimes cause you gonna love it, people are really kind and the food is just amazing and they all love to help you get to know more about Persian culture, my own fav part about our culture is our language, poetry, music, and architecture cause it's so deep and beautiful. be proud you come from an ancient civilization, fortunately, there are lots of street interviews and vlogs about realistic Iran on youtube that you can watch lots of love from another Iranian sister🥰

Iran changed its name from Persia back in 1935 on an official letter. The name of Iran origins from Iranshahr. Being Iranian is the nationality. Being Persian is the largest ethnic group in Iran. Iran means land of Aryans (Arian). The words Persia and Persian are not Persian words. The language is called Parsi, which had been adapted to Farsi, due to the Arab conquest of Persia, as the Arabic language doesn't have the letter /P/, so native Arabic speakers pronounce the word with an /F/, instead of /P/.

@LB Yes, you are right, in modern day Ilam and Khuzestan. You are aware the Luri's are descents of them, which still live there? Also, I think with today's society of Iran, they see it as a comparison of being British and not just English. You could be Scottish, Irish Welsh, Cornish etc. They see it as form of unification, as opposed to dominance of land. But I see your point for sure, it has a lot of validity to it.

Hello Beth! An Iranian muslim guy here 🙋🏻‍♂🇮🇷 your story was really interesting, emotional and also inspiring. I loved the part that you talked about being always interested to middle eastern culture and affinity towards Islam and not knowing the reason before finding out. First of all let me tell you.. your country Iran is one of the most beautiful and historical countries with more than 2500 years of civilization, and Iranians are among the most generous, kind hearted and smart people. So really something to be proud of.. welcome to the gang 😄 But there is something you need to know, those Persians that you see in shows that you mentioned are not even close to an Iranian. Those are mainly some people who don't necessaeily like the country Iran, rather they just want to show of with some of its culture (not even original and noble parts of the culture) alot of them are even ashamed of calling themselves Iranian, so they use the word Persian so westerners don't realise they are from Iran. But I feel completely different about you, you are proud of it from the beginning. So please be careful in choosing the resources to know more about our culture. I highly recommend you to start watching videos of tourist vlogs traveling to Iran. For example these series are really lovely "Best Ever Food Review Show - Iran" or "Peter Santenello - Iran" or "Food ranger - Iran". Im sure you will love these videos and trust me you will learn from these way more than those foolish series about Iranians made in the west. i'll link some of the playlists: ▪︎kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5W4kGehatpsnpY ▪︎kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIjbhmCmiJmZesU ▪︎kzbin.info/www/bejne/on2mlIBmmLuDba8 ▪︎kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zom8Y4elmKpgrpo Because of political stuff, Iran is under the heaviest media propaganda pressure.. so what the West shows about Iran is mostly wrong. Btw I really enjoyed watching this video and I hope you learn more and more about our country and maybe even start learning Farsi :) (our beautiful language) here is an Iranian music: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXWxdYmqpK-bn80 Good luck and free to ask me anything about anything. 🇮🇷🤍

Hey I'm Iranian American myself and I just wanted to give you a heads up that according to the Iranian constitution anyone with an Iranian father is considered a citizen and can apply for a passport. I've done this myself and have two passports now. There's benefits to this aside from the obvious one that is you being able to visit Iran. For example Turkey requires US citizens to have a tourist visa but if you have an Iranian passport you can visit Turkey without a visa.

@@BethDunlavey I'm utterly sorry to hear about what your dad's wife did. Some people suffer from the lack of decency, and do not possesse any generosity in their spirit, neither fairness in their mind, nor kindness in heart. Your dad's wife is obviously one of those people. However, I hope in the future you meet and develop heartily relation with your sisters as every sister should. Fortunately, during this proces you have learned much about yourself, and the parts of your background which seemed to be lost in obscurity are now brought into the light, and you have made new friends, and met many - if not thousands both in real life and virtual - who wish you the best in life. You have also come home to one of the greatest and oldest nations ever. But most of all, what matters in life is the kindness. No importance there is to be given to if one is English, Irish, Persian, Danes, Chinese, Israelis, German, ...what matters most is the kindness and the care for each other. As the great John Keats' writes about friendship: "(...) But when, O Wells! thy roses came to me, My sense with their deliciousness was spelled: Soft voices had they, that with tender plea Whispered of peace, and truth, and friendliness unquelled." John Keats "To a Friend Who Sent Me Some Roses" Your video brought much love and gave "roses" to everyone, who watched it. Thank you Shabet Ziba Maziar

Persia was the name used by foreigners to introduce Iran, otherwise the name Iran is very old. There are many differences regarding Zoroaster's birth, some say 1000 BC, some say 5000 BC, but in his poems, he refers to Iranovich as the land of aryans (free or noble). He has praised Iranovich many times.

Hi Beth, I was touched by your story. Your dad should be so proud to have such a sweet understanding daughter and I would advise him to make up for lost time and to be courageous about including you in his life. I'd like to make a little contribution about the country name Iran. The name Iran goes back to nearly 2500 years ago to Achemanian dynasty. Iran means "the homeland of Aryans". The early inhabitants of Iranian plateaue and the caucasses were known as Aryans and they started the largest empire known to humanity 2500 yeats ago. The point many people miss is us Iranians always called our country IRAN not Persia. Persia is what western countries called Iran, because the dominant culture and also the early empires in that region were formed by ethnic Persians. There are many poems by the great Persian poet Ferdawsi who lived around a 1000 years ago, in which he refers to the name Iran. The reason the name was officially changed in 1935 is because Iran represents all Iranian people, all Iranian ethnicities regardless of colour, creed, language or religion whereas Persia only represented Perisan people. So what's happened is now the western countries call us what we've always called ourselves which is Iran. You've peobably watched Peter Santenello, Drew Binsky and other travellers vlogs about Iran. If you havent then look them up and even better, try and visit your fatherland to really get to know it. I think you'll fall in love with the place. I wish you the very best of luck in the future and look after yourself.

@BethDunlavey salaam Bath, 😊 so sorry to hear about your dad. That must be tough. I know a very similar case. To cut a long story, a friend's dad who left his mum and had a new family got old and died never managing to make a proper relationship with him. A lot of guilt on his shoulders and a great big hole in the heart of his son (who is now in his 40s), that will never be healed completely. I often wonder how the father felt before taking his last breath knowing he didn't have his son by his side. Not good I'm sure. I'm also sure the burden of guilt will weigh heavy on your dad's shoulders as he gets older but I'm sad to say that's what he deserves. Well done for your courage and keep going strong. 💪I look forward to seeing your vlog in Tehran 😊 🇮🇷 👏 مراقب خودت باش

actually Iran was always called IRAN. The word Iran has its origin in Aryana which means land of Aryans..But Iran was also since ancient times a multi ethnical empire..there were Iranic tribes like Persians, Kurds, Parthians etc which belong to iranic ethnicity and speak indoeuropean languages but it also were different ethnics like Semitic tribes or smaller Arab speaking minorities in south etc... During the history and after Turkish invasions, several iranian tribes assiimilated to turkish language(even Azeris are ethnically Iranian, but they speak turkish)..Greeks always called Iran the persian empire and since than foreign countries used to call IRan Persia (Iran's government decided in the 30's that all Iranian embassies must also use the word Iran in their communications with foreign governments...Today Iran is even more multicultural, probally around 50% have persian origins, some 25-30 % speak Turkish, and then there are Kurdish speaker, a small arabian Belutshi speaker etc, minority, ..Except that lot of people outside IRan have deep cultural or ethnical connections to Iran.. all Kurds are all part of the iranic ethnicity, ossetians in Georgia and Russia also are an iranic ethnic even they are christians..Also the tajiks in Afghanistan and Tajikestan belong to IRANIC tribes and etc.... Islam was not part of iranian culture, came to Iran by arab invasions... in ancient times Iranians were Zorastirans...there are some other cultures with close ties to Iran..Example: Armenian language has lot of similarities to Persian(since both are older eastern indoeuropean languages), same with Pashtu language etc... Today every body who speaks Farsi is called persian, if you look at it at ethnical point, probally 50-60% of iranian population are dominant persian/Westasian DNA...since during history and lot of immigration, Invasions etc there are also other ethnical influences like arabic, Turkish, etc in several part of IRAN Picture 1 (languages spoken in IRAN) i.redd.it/9nm0g8x4x8j61.jpg (iranic languages) qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-8d9efa870351c0085c71bd57d7459ee7 be aware that speaking language and ethnicity are not equal..for example azeris speaking Turkish but they are ethnically iranian, while for example some people in Pakistan or China speaks some language form iranic family, but they aren't ethnically iranian..kzbin.info/www/bejne/qovXnXeEmMeYe5oso the long history has created lot of different interessting connections(and sorry for my bad english, I tried my best to write in a way it would be understandable)..And don't look at shah of snset as typical Iran(that just a Hollywood show full of crapy stereotypes)...Iran today is a world in itself of different ethnicities and looks (you'll see very white people, dark brown people and even people looking like Asians, you'll see different languages, clothing and even cuisines... but since Iranians are since 3000 years living in same country , you'll not find much racism inside IRAN between iranians... even country had to deal with larger problems in last 50 years (war, sanctions, political problems etc) people are still very warm hearted.. qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-211ac6ea06cb64fd90dc7e5bdf9744fb-pjlq

The person who changed the name Persia to Iran was in fact the latest king's father, Reza Shah and he did that because he wanted to bring all people in Iran in more of a unity by saying that the country is the land of Aryans (Iran and Arya both refer to the race which btw is the race most white people in Europe and the US come from as well so in that sense if your mother is white she too might have been an Aryan so both your parents are from the same race). As you already might know, Iran actually is one of the most impurest in terms of having kept its ethnicities intact and it has many different subgroups of Aryans in it and a few minorities that are not Aryan yet after invading Iran and causing more genocide a group of their people remained such as Turks who are of barbaric tatar race that goes to center of Asia who are not Aryans yet after Osmanis (ancient turks) kept attacking Persia a minority of them got left that today live mostly in the capital and in the northern western part of the country (the head of the cat that is Iran on the map) and likewise a minority of Arabs in the south that remained after invasions who are of the semitic race. Aryan subgroups such as Kurds, Lors, Baluch, etc. are groups that are originally Iranian and have been with Persians in Iran for the longest. As you can imagine multiple groups of people who got their own rich subcultures is generally a bad idea and many like the Kurds and Turks of today claim they should all gather and take bits of different countries like Iran and make their own countries. To combat this devision, Shah called Iran Iran to remind all Aryan people who are in Iran that they ALL belong to this country and MUST become more united and patriotic (in a good way) for the country to be safe and prosper and that this country belongs to Aryans NOT arabs NOT turks NOT any other groups that are not Iranian originally. So it really was not political, more like social and a management strategy.

Persia and Iran at this point ARE interchangeable words and honestly most Iranians prefer the term Persian and Persia instead of Iran or Iranian, the reason being mostly racism and the lies the world has been fed about Iranians. So when someone says they're Persian everyone either wouldn't even know which country they're refering to at all OR they'd be thinking of Persian cat/ Persian rug/ Prince of Persia (which btw is highly inaccurate since it demonstrates the said supposed Persian prince as an Arab in an Arabic settings but still that's a popular video game/story and has an element of mysticism and fantasy to it),etc. but when the same person would say they're Iranians, nonIranians would instantly jump to the news that is always filled with disinformation and negatives and hateful lies that claims Iranians are Arabs or that they're "terrorists" or that they're "islamic" or something else that's vile and untrue and negative. Some minorities that are not of the Persian ethnicity might protest to that word since Persia means the land of the Persians (the biggest and most original and oldest ethnicity groups within the Aryan race that has settled and made Iran the empire it was) but most reasonable and true Iranians prefer the term Persian and use it to refer to ANYone of any ethnicities that is Iranian. So feel free to keep using it. It's correct and a much more well-liked term by Iranians as well.

Um I mean I do encourage more research on who Iranians truly are because for example, Iranians by default were Zoroastrians and PLENTY in Persian culture and values and practices and lifestyle comes from that religion. Islam was a religion forced on Iranians by Arabs when they invaded Iran and mass murdered and committed many genocides on all true Iranians who refused to give into islam and refused to change their Persian language to the version of Persian that has Arabic words in it (for example, Salam is in fact a very offensive term that was forced on Iranians to use instead of its Persian word which is Dorood by arabs as a nasty way to remind Iranians of the genocide that was committed on them and that they and their countries have been ravaged by Arabs and islam) and even to this day by the fascist Arab-born islamic regime in Iran, Iranians are constantly being barred from knowing their true identities and going back to it by the regime because they know that if all Iranians knew what glorious people they were once there would be no way they're accept this islamic dictatorship over them that's leeching them to death. So your affinity to islam ... uh ... is not about Iran. If anything, true Iranians are the ones who know how grim the fact that islam is still linked to Iran and kids born in Iran are focibly called muslims, is and true Iranians are the ones who are irreligious or the ones who strongly long for their OWN religion to become the official and practiced religion in Iran which is Zoroastrianism. NOT islam and NOT anything that is forced on Iranians by Arabs or Arab puppets like the dictatorship that has been destroying Iran and killing innocent beings there by the thousands inside Iran.

Interesting facts- Persian Empire please research. The original people from part of Isfahan in Iran in Ancient time went to Germany. That is Aryan descendents. All scientists, poets, inventors, physicist and manners comes from Ancient civilization. Persian food influence through the Europe. It is real Mediterranean food not Middle Eastern. Because of silk route in Ancient era connected Asia to Europe someone made error saying Persians are middle Eastern. They are not. The food is similar to Greek,Italian & French. Because of Persian Empire the food influence were part of countries under the biggest or largest Empire.

Let’s be honest, persian food isn’t similar to Italian or French lol. It’s hardly pizza or frog legs is it. And as for your comment about it not being in the Middle East. Simple geography shows you, it is 100% in the Middle East of the world. Simple as that.

@@BethDunlavey Persian food is real Mediterranean food . It is 100% tastier and healthier than English food. One has to be foodie. If you are not familiar with people, food & culture no need to make insulting comments. Being nice, kind and humble is the only way to be. Reading & exploring food then talk about it. Read history. Knowledge is power not being offensive. You also mentioned you might have Italian in you then you said not white like Irish etc. That is not good. Italians are Mediterranean . Cacausian too. English,Irish and Scottish are not the only Caucasians. Many different tribes of white people from Europe,Asia,Russia and yes IRAN . I normally don't respond to rude and offensive comments.

I'm Iranian myself and I'm so sorry about how irresponsible the Iranian man that is your father has been to just leave and not be of any help to the child he had made with your mother AND to go get married again and never even telling his family now about his past AND for lying to your mother about who he was. Some Iranian men's behavior and lack of all honesty and humanity and sanity and sense of responsibility and lack of respect and misogyny is just outright shameful. Men have radically changed from the gents they used to be in ancient Persia (which was also heavily matriarchal and that was always a main reason why the empire was so powerful and successful with many women as the heads of the country (queens that were both married and sometimes not married) and many women who were the highest ranks of the military and the wise decision makers for the empire. Cyrus the great himself was in fact heavily advised and supervised by his mother and later on wife who basically would tell him what the right methods and strategies were but after the Arab's invasion and the emergence of misogynistic psycho men, that rich matriarchy is being heavily kept hidden from Iranians so that their destructions can be done easier. BUT still many evidences of it is left such as how women and feminine symbols are in the center of many equipments of the past which refers to how in ancient Persia is was a core belief that women are the centers to life that make life go around who are the beginning of life. Sadly many Iranian men have forgotten their identities and values and many absolute coward men that are misogynistic incels are just trying hard to force a system of slavery of women in Iran which is why women in Iran are suffering so bad with the absolute worst scum men in Iran making vile decisions for them all the time such as how they forced Hijab and took almost all of women's rights away from them.

I am so sorry for your experience, sadly Iranian guys are not the most honest ones about their love life with their families and are expected to be married to the girl their mom chose, so many Iranian dudes who went abroad to study or work in '80s, left behind their children in the fear of getting judged and not being accepted by their family in Iran, not to mention even many Iranian girls get left behind by their boyfriends because of the disapproval of the guys family, especially in your father generation, thankfully nowadays the culture has changed a lot and many Iranians marry happily out of their race and got accepted into the family, there are many videos about Iranian guys or girls abroad openly dating and marrying none Iranians , Iranian fathers can be the most generous and supportive dads out there, but the cultureit has its own negative sides as well like paying too much attention about society expectations and all the stuff

From what I have heard Persians are a tribe or what you might call it a race but Iranian is anyone who is born in Iran or a naturalized citizen. For example the Turks and Arabs in the south of Iran are considered Iranian but not Persian and if you travel to Iran the distinction is very clear in they way they conduct themselves. The people who are ruling Iran now are not Persians , they even like to wipe out the Persian heritage and culture if they could . they are mostly from other races and half Arabs. Do not put all middle eastern in one category., this would like saying all Europeans are the same, there is significant difference between a Greek and a Swedish or a Romanian and a French, the middle east is the same. Persians are different from Arabs, Turks, Baluchis, Kurds, and others. They are neither superior nor inferior but simply different. I am glad that you have finally found your father but stick to your European heritage and by the way real Persians like Zoroastrianism way more than Islam. Take care and God bless all people.
