Shug Avery and Celie got me too. I remember watching that scene over and over. Not sure why my parents were letting me watch that movie at 7 or 8, lol, but I was hooked. My mom just figured it out over time apparently. We were watching House Hunters one day and this lovely lesbian couple was looking for a home. She asked "When are you gonna bring home a fine woman like that? Get yourself a wife" I was caught off guard and just said "I'm trying 🥴"

Adriennes story is very similar to my older sister… we grew up in same religious environment upbringing and finally in her 30s is when my older sister had enough and left to live with her girlfriend and my mom found out and badgered me and created hostile home environment . My mom stopped trusting me and my other sister due to their strained relationship (my mom felt i conspired with this happening and that i was just bad for accepting her lifestyle ) . they weren’t speaking for years til 2020 due to the pandemic so there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel y’all. Praying for the my lgbt black kids who grew up in religious homes, very difficult.

I reached my point of being tired right at the end of my second pregnancy, but didn't begin to embrace myself until the beginning of this year. I got tired of suppressing my happiness just to make others feel comfortable. If you would've told me years ago that I'd eventually get to this point, I wouldn't believe it. It's always best to be yourself and live as you choose. No one else can make you happy like you can. No one else can free you, you have to do that on your own.

Well, I waited until I had been out on my own for a couple of years before I said anything. I had known for years, since college. I didn’t say too much out of fear of being homeless and of course my granny would say I’m going through a phase. Last year during quarantine, I told my father (a minister) and his response was, “I already knew, I’ve been waiting for you to say something!!” My mother did not have the same response. She’s still processing it, it’s been a year but she is coming around.
@TheeMuses
@TheeMuses 3 жыл бұрын
I think that’s an important factor to consider. Like we said wait until you know you have a place to go & you can depend on yourself to live your life before coming out especially if you know your parents might be against it in some way. I’m glad that your dad accepted you and your mother will come around don’t worry. Thank you for sharing your story.
@DAieriean
@DAieriean 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheeMuses you’re welcome. What was truly a shock for me is that I assumed the responses from my parents would be opposite. I just knew my mom would be in my corner and my dad would be throwing scriptures. He said many people have passed away not being their true selves. I want you to be your who you are no matter what anyone says, you will always have me.

Honestly thank you for this video. Because coming from a background where being gay or loving who what "was" considered wrong on every level. So the part where you both reached a breaking point where enough is enough, really resonated with me. So just hearing that even at the start your relationships with you parents where definitely rocky but staying true to who you are, made them see like hey maybe they are serious and decided to stick with you eventually gives me hope.

My coming out story was about 2 yrs ago I was 30 at the time. Soo basically I’ve dated men my entire life. My mom would often ask me when I would have kids etc. I have mostly gay friends and we clubbed every weekend. I just felt free at the gay clubs. I had an attraction to the woman but knew it wasn’t right. I didn’t want to be judge and wondered what people would say. Fast forward after my last male relationship I was over men period. They just didn’t get me and couldn’t satisfy me let’s keep it 100 lol. But the next guy I met(trans male). We dated and he became my boyfriend. No longer together but that started my queer acceptance. I dropped the bomb on my mom Christmas. It took her some time but she came around. My family accepts me for me and so blessed for that. I love myself to much to not be happy❤️. I love y’all thanks for letting us share with everyone.

I can relate so much to your story. I had an insanely strict Black Pentecostal upbringing. I am a bi Black male who didn’t come to terms with my sexuality until my early twenties while away at college. While I consider myself spiritual rather than religious I now resent organized religion for the most part especially the Pentecostal denomination

So hey I’m 16 and I came out to my mother in February. It was 2:30 in the morning and I had to be at work at 8 (so I should’ve been sleep ). Anyway we were watching KZbin and the videos we were watching were girls using questions that the subscribers asked that they would never ask their parents.The first time I was like ok this really helped me .My mom said what helped you I said watching these videos and hearing your opinions. I said it’s nice to know your not going to kick me out or disown me .She said why would I ? I was silent after that .She said hello !? I said like if I got pregnant or something. She said oh .On the next video I agreed with something I don’t even know what It was 🤣.She said we’ll do you like boys or girls . I was so scared but I stayed looking at the tv . I mumbled I said “both” .She didn’t say anything.Then she said what (I know she heard me the first time ). I said both again .Then she started asking the standard questions when you come out ,how did you know ?what girls have you even kissed?etc.I had to go to work the next morning on the verge of crying bc I couldn’t believe what I did . I made it through.I went to the gym after work that helped a lot . I was actually a little depressed for like 3-4 days but I’m better now. I don’t really talk about it.

Thank you for this video and storytime! I came out to my mom 1st at 19 bc my gf at the time told me she would leave me. She was only the 2nd gf I had ever had and I didn't want to loose her so I outed myself to whom I thought was the easier parent. My mom said she had a feeling and she was just waiting on me to say it. Back then the Katy Perry song was out "I kissed a girl and I liked it. " I played it often where my mom could hear trying to throw hints. Then later that year I came out to my Dad on a car ride. I was terrified bc he has a bad temper. I was expecting to be cursed out but he gave me such a calm response...I was in shock. He said he didn't care what I liked so long as I was happy. And after that day we gained a closer relationship. He started telling me he loves me more and showing more affection than he used to . I was blessed truly. But I would like to reiterate to the kids ... if it isn't safe or you feel you could be homeless bc of it..Then please wait. Wait until you don't have to depend on your parents and you have your own home to go to... to tell them.

Thanks for sharing! I came out in my late 20s although I was messing with females since I was in college- (18 to be exact)... it was a situationship that made me see forever can be with a female. Unfortunately that didn’t last but it made me comfortable with whom I am...

Wow such a similar upbringing of heavily in church and being sheltered except my completely coming out wasn’t until this yr. I’ve had girlfriends etc in the past but it was hush hush. Mainly because it was not safe and threatened my kids upbringing from relatives. So I waited til they were adults. So now everybody like why you waited so long? It’s a phase. It’s not trust me. I’m happier, not stressed , healthier, and Relieved I don’t hide anymore and happily in love with my current partner.

Good Morning! I Came From The Generation Where When My Twin Sister And Told Our Dad We Were Both Gay. He Said I Love You Regardless That Is When We Were Openly Gay. He Even Taught Us How To Tie Our Neck Ties. He Always Told Us To Have The Up Most Respect For Women. We Were Religious Brought Up Which I Feel Is A Cult. When We Left For College We Became Spiritual; Not Religion. The Woman We Had To Call" Mom" We Were Adopted. She Tried To Beat Gayness Out Of Us And As A Result We Have No Relationship With Her Demon Ass. Thank You Humbly For Your Story And Always Stay True And Amazing! 🌈🌍💜💙💙💛💖😊 Happy Pride!!!! Las Vegas, NV.

I’m so happy that you have loving father who loves you and your sister. So many gay people don’t have the loving support that your dad gives you and your sister.

When I left my ex-husband, it was because I was disrespected in the relationship and I finally realised nothing was going to change. I thought I was Bi. (My ex-husband was the first person I came out to as well and at the time, I told him that I thought I was going to be a lesbian - I was confused about being physically attracted to men.) And I identified as Bi when I came out after leaving him. After being involved in a relationship with a woman for a few years, I realised that the picture in my mind of what the future is supposed to be like, the person standing next to me in front of that white picket fence is a woman. I realised that with a woman I feel like I've come home. I never felt comfortable, fully myself with a man.

I can relate to your stories. Thank you for sharing. I also grew up sheltered. Identify as Bi because I am attracted to both women and men. It is a journey. I am going to therapy as well and healing from my childhood as well.

Damn, I was waiting for this. I laughed and cried during this video. I grew up during a time that men beat and/or killed their gf/wife when he found out she was coming out. 😭😭😭. Parents would disown, throw their kid (the gay kid) out of the house when the kid either came out or was caught with same sex gender. It probably still happens. I hope not to that degree though. I saw what J did though @10:24. Thanks for sharing your stories.

It's Celie and Shug for me too. I outed myself twice because my mother didn't want it to be true in high school so I kept it to myself, dated guys, got into a very toxic relationship, had four beautiful boys and I outed myself again over a year ago even though my kids knew before anyone and they accept me so hey.
