I wanted to give that little blonde boy the biggest hug. That was so intensely personal; I understand why it took so long to be ready to share it. Thank you! ❤️ Bandit was slinking around behind you a couple of times-looking like a ghost.

You are a really good "teacher". I blamed my substance abuse almost 100% on genetics--lots of mental disorders as well as addictions going way back in the family. My parents were not abusive or violent, but I came along later in their lives (I have 2 older sisters) and I think they were just kind of done being really involved in child rearing. As a result I think I was a pretty lonely child. I lived very much in the world of my own imagination, and eventually found that alcohol helped me feel I was someone or somewhere else. I was in tears when you described your feelings of not belonging--When my mother was quite old, she lost some of the filter for what she would say, and more than once she told me how my father had not wanted a third child. She told me that he said it would "ruin their perfect family." I was close to 60 years old when I heard this, but it really hurt (even though I laughed it off). It wasn't until listening to you that I thought, it wasn't just hearing it then that hurt, I must have felt that all along! The good news is that even without this realization, with the love of my soul mate & creating my own truly loving family (fun fact: I stopped after 2 children, not wanting to have that lonely #3!), I was able to get the help I needed.

My parents only had to raise their voices to me and it would crush my feelings. I can't imagine one of them hitting me or each other. I don't know how that would have changed me as a person because I was such a sensitive child. It's hard to wrap my mind around how someone moves forward from that. Addiction would make sense to me.

Great job Marc! I want to say this from the Mother of an addict's perspective. My beautiful, strong son...26 now, got mixed up in life just like you did, almost mirrored. I used to get so mad at him, asking him WHY ?? His Dad and I aren't users, but we did fight, separate, fight, fight over him....bla bla bla....so I now say Why wouldn't he ?? I feel guilty but you can't go back. And he's never ever blamed us, but we were a big part in it. He's clean now for about 5 months....working, beautiful family he's got back on track with....and I pray daily for him. So your story had me in tears. I'm so glad you came out the other side, and I know my son will too.

Please know I wanted to hear your story. I am grateful and my heart is full for you bravely sharing of yourself and I wanted to say thank you. Thank you Marc and thank you Steve for giving of yourselves in such an honest and generous way, in a safe way and creating a space for many (I love to read everyone's comments) that is kind and courageous. I am sorry for the experiences that hurt and where they lead, I send cuddles to your beautiful younger self and to you now. I blubbed quite a few times hanging off your every word but those blubs became huge happy ones to know you and Steve found each other through your individual experiences. Here's to you both and lifetime of joy together 💕. P.s, "even today, right before making this video, I'm like who's going to want to hear me, your story is nothing, you're not going to help anyone da da da" - yes your story is something, you are everything (just for being you and I think you're pretty tops too) and yes, you've helped me. I've decided to re-enter an E.D outpatient program today. You've helped me x.
