Thanks for this great video!! Just a little input; We Christians and Muslims are not united just since the time of comunism. We were always united because we see each other just as albanians and that's the most important thing for us, Religion is a private matter. We had to deal against Invaders who were Muslims and Christians too, so for us this part plays a subordinate role.

P. S. Great video Al Jazeera, you made many Albanians living in emigration crying 😅😢🎉 Just one footnote. Religions in the Albanians lands have always lived in peace and harmony, many families are mixed: my father family is from bektashi community, my mum family Christian orthodox, while many from youngest generation embraced chattolicism. I always remember the words of my grandfather. A cat nevertheless is black, orange, white, etc.is always a cat. It should be applied the same to humankind. That teached me life and how to be a good human being much more than 17 years of school.

The role of Islam in Albanian society is slightly overstated in this documentary. Muslims today are something closer to 70% while few of these Muslims are actually practicing, many of them drink alchohol and eat pork for example. There are also sizeable Catholic and Orthodox Christian minorities. However this is still a very good documentary!

Albania is one of the oldest places on earth.albanians come from illyrian tribe .Albania was invaded by turkey for 500 years . They brought the muslim religion. Before turkey, albania was Christian, and it was very very developed. It was the only place in europe who did a massive protest on the slavery issue , in a time when in europe slavery wasn’t even known as a concept. After turkey , germany and italy invaded albania. But then it gained freedom . And it was under a dictatorship which turned albania an atheist country. The dictator took down almost all the churches and mosques. Also albania was the only place in europe who took jews when the genocide was happening , and we were also under german invasion.we took about 2000 jews in our homes , changed their names to albanian names and never delivered them to hitler. Now , we are a democratic place . And due to our history, we don’t classify as a muslim or christian place, we have all the religions here living in peace and harmony . We have mosques and churches right next to each other . We also have diff religions such as Buddhists ect ect . We also have a lot of spiritual people too, doing yoga meditating and stuff like that . Thank you for your visit to our country. I loved it ❤️

M Scott not fully correct because the thing is that what do people think when they hear Byzantine Empire? They think of greeks maybe, right? The truth is Illyria couldn't be invaded by something what they were themself because Illyrians were part of that Empire in creating and ruling it , like the major part to be honest. The Imperator Constantine the Great eg was Illyrian or more exact he was Dardanian. So we were not invaded because you cant invade yourself.

You are ignoring Albanian Christians in this video. 99% of our history is Christian. The first Albanian muslims appeared as late as 1800s. And today Albania is not “vastly Muslim” it’s actually less then half Muslim and more then half Christian. Many are converting back to their true religion. So this video is really just Islamic propaganda. You didn’t show a single church here. There are about 500 mosques in Albania and more then 2000 churches. And that’s a fact. So this documentary is one sided. Also I love how you go into skanderbegs castle, Skanderbeg is one of the most anti Islamic figures in the worlds history.
