I Love this video!!!!! But, with that being said..........and maybe I’m a little late with this comment. But, Go Go did not start in the streets of SE. it started with “The Godfather” Chuck Brown combining Jazz, Funk and Latin music. Also, never letting the music stop, in between songs letting the percussion continue leading into the next song.

Definitely. Chuck was playing with a Latino band called Los Lobos where incorporated the congas. He used the beat from Grover Washington's Mister Magic with the congas with his own band then started playing that beat between songs to keep the crowd on the floor. Add some call and response and Go-Go was born.

This is Foundational Black American music. None of theses Band members was thinking about Africa when they created their music.🙄

Man cmon . Go Go music is the most Afrocentric contemporary music that you are ever going to hear. There is a KZbin video of the backyard band playing in Ghana. Most Go go percussionist recognize that African influences on their styles.

I am 100% FBA, #B1 born and raised in SE, Washington, DC. I have been sourrounded by GoGo my entire life. GoGo is a unique sound flourished by a variety of genres of music in America, Africa, Latin, Caribbeian, etc. Blending Black American funk, Rap, R&B, Soul, Jazz, Pop and Rock, combined with live instruments, I believe is what makes it an original (We just made it our own eclectic sound). But when you talk about it's foundation? I have to acknowledge that the origins of GoGo - with that congo and cowbell, was heavily influenced by Africa and Latin America. Maybe those kids weren't thinking about Africa, but everyone who passed by them on the streets felt the connection. However, the orginality of that DC sound & flavor and what GoGo has always been, is something no one has EVER done and cannot be duplicated. That's a distinct black American sound that is unmatched. Period.
