This is easily Subaru's darkest suicide attempt by far, even though most people don't notice, when you see all the other times that he tried to kill himself or risk his life in a way that would reset the timeline it had a purpose, he killed himself from jumping from the cliff to try to prevent Rem's dead, he commanded Jules to kill him when he was being possessed by Sloth because he saw no other choice, he tried to kill himself at the beginning of the season as an attempt to save Rem. here, he was depressed and bit his own tongue, there was no imminent danger, the loop had reset recently, it was just that he had too much.

What was scary about that was the fact that if he died there, he would be dead. He wouldn't go back by using return by death. Echidna said it herself. Subaru would become a invalid as his mind would shatter. He attempted suicide knowing this and that is insane.

It's just a matter of _when._ It's also fair to point out that Satella clearly _isn't_ sane, so her reasoning to not give Subaru something to lessen his bad experiences in this world is also her fault.

@@SnowyWolborg All I will say is this. Satella and the Witch of Envy are not one and the same. The Echidna from the castle of dreams, and the real Echidna are not the same. Same goes for all of the other witches. None of the witches exist anymore, all that's left are fragments of their souls of what they once were. The castle of dreams is the only place where the witches still exist in their original forms with their original powers, and that Satella is what she used to be. This Satella is obviously different than the Witch we met previously, where the witch in the real world was completely selfish and corrupted, only saying that she selfishly loves Subaru. In contrast, the castle of dreams Satella tells Subaru to love himself, to be stronger, to keep others feelings and grief in mind whenever he uses his power, and most of all, she acknowledges that Subaru must kill her.

So, Subaru looked 'dirty' there at the end because he was still under the effects of the tomb. He lost his qualifications and anyone not qualified to take the trials would get violently ill entering the tomb. So he's toughing it out to talk to her and that's also why nobody else could find her in there... It's the one place that Garf is afraid to go and nobody else could really get into without being rejected by the tomb... So Subaru is fighting really hard to 'look cool' while talking to Emilia right now even though he wants to puke.

Incase you didn’t know exactly what Echidna’s contract entailed, they would enter an agreement where she would help him to the best of her ability and knowledge to reach a perfect future, and in return he would have to test every possible timeline with RBD so that Echidna could see every reality. long story short with echidnas help he accomplishes every goal he set out for but only on a superficial level he forces Betty to break her contract sending her into a pit of despair, Emelia never gets over the trauma of her past and goes insane much as we saw in "taste of death", Garfiel is forced to leave the sanctuary and as a result, he's is made to feel weak and useless a feeling that only builds over time. Subaru even gets felt to abandon the royal election and recruits Reinhardt. But Reinhardt hates himself for being abandoned by his original master. Last but not least Subaru lives in denial trying his best to believe that this was the best outcome and typically fails.

Subaru has reason to wonder if the people around him _actually_ care.

Roswaal is the one who ordered Elsa to steal the Insignia, Roswaal is the one who Hired Maylie to cause the Dog issue. Roswaal is the one who let the mess at the Royal selection happen and even interfered when someone was trying to stop that mess. Roswaal is the one who let the Witch cult do their thing. Roswaal is the one who summoned the Rabbits and he is the one who ordered an attack on the Mansion. By all accounts, the source of Subaru's sufferings was Roswaal L. Mathers. Satella only gave him the power to survive. And if she let him tell about Return by Death, Subaru would literally be Spawn Killed infinitely. And that's putting aside the issue of cut content.

@YaBoyRoshi, please read this, not spoilers: You guys seemed to have missed a lot this video, and I think it will help with context going forward, no spoilers I promise, these are just what I remember off the dome. 1) Satella basically implied "I didn't give you this power so you could die painfully over and over again, I did it to save you, to keep you safe, stop fucking dying, stop hurting yourself, LOVE YOURSELF, VALUE YOURSELF MORE, wtf is wrong with you I give you a "get out of suffering free" card and you go cash into the pain hotel just to save others? You literally out here killing yourself just to see if you can return to a point where that blue bitch still got her memory. Value yourself please, cause I love you. 2) The witches had a mini fight over if they should heal him or respect his decision to suicide, which btw is messed up considering he did that in front of the girl who gave him a power to prevent his suffering/deaths and instead he's using it to die. In the end more wanted to bring him back than not. 3) Ros has said previously that his clown paint is his "war paint", when he removes the entire act as a clown, he's basically given up. Subaru told him in so many words, "Dafuq you doing lying own and accepting defeat like this, the game is still on, get that bitch out your heart, put your mask on and lets play, If I lose, i'll be what you want me to be in the next loop, if you lose, you have to submit to me and survive without that stupid ass book". 4) Ros implied heavily that he's trying to force Subaru to become a single objective focused person, willing to discard everything else precious to him in pursuit of the one thing he wants to obtain. So if he's trying to keep Emilia safe, he must be wiling to discard all that are not Emilia. Only then will he be able to accomplish anything. So whenever Ros sees that this isn't the personality Subaru emulates, then he decides that it has deviated from the book and "gives up" on that loop. 5) Ros has no clue how Return by Death works, only knows that Subaru has a way to "go back in time". Earlier he tried to stomp a mud hole in Subaru to get him to "activate" it due to the suffering because he was tired of that loop. In said loop Ros also said that the people left behind in those loops are not dragged with him to the next one. 6) Puck is the type of dad that comes back from the gas station 10 years later after going out for a pack, hugs your grown up ass, then leaves again to go pick up some pizza. 7) Emilia is Best Girl after the land dragon.

What I want is for the person to have an open mind about what is going on and say "Let me think for a bit about why he's doing that" instead of "Shut the fuck up, what an idiot." He wasn't dirty, he was injured and ill because he entered the graveyard without Echidna's permission, she revoked his ability to take trials as soon as he rejected her contract. He was trying his best to act tough to Emilia despite being severely injured. Only Emilia and Garfiel have the ability to take the trial, hence Emilia ran to the graveyard as she knew nobody could find her there, and Garfiel was too scared to enter the graveyard.

I know this is a year old but just an FYI on the terms of the contract intended. The Witch of Greed wants to know everything so in order to know and understand everything she would show Subaru the path he needs to take and advise him but in return he would have to take every path possible so she can see every possible event and future to learn how the world and people would change. He would make it to his goal eventually but not until she made sure he exhausted all other possibilities and outcomes. There is actually a light novel on if he chose to accept the contract and lord was it bleak and depressing. He would kill himself just to tell someone what the weather was going to be like.

the "terms" of echidona's contract are explored in a side-story. Basically, he gets a crystal necklace that allows him to talk to echidona any time, and she sees and experiences everything he does. She will advise him on what actions to take and when to reset, and will do her best to save everyone no matter how many resets or costs to Subaru there are. She will NOT take the most efficient route, because each new reset is a chance to experience another variation on events and learn more. She WILL abuse his power to learn. He will eventually become better and stronger, and achieve his goals, but he will have died tens of millions of times and lose all sense of self-value, resetting the timeline over trivial things.

The reason Satella gave Subaru return by death is not Because she's envious. Sometimes you are looking into it yoo hard. The reason she gave it to him is because she loves him and wants him to be safe and doesn't want him to die. That could be the Envy part coming in, Subaru would always be hers no matter what, but at the same time he will be able to avoid certain "dead" ends. And Subaru has ran into a lot, some because of Roswaal but a lot because of his own stupidity. Not to say the number wasn't minimal, it could have been a lot bigger. But the long and short of it is Satella wants Subaru to be safe and return from death to avoid that pathway and live happily for himself, but Subaru always tries to overcome what kills him and that's why we love him.

So the anime didn't mention something pretty important: Satella and the Witch of Envy are separate entities. As in Envy is a split personality disorder thing. Satella wasn't compatible with her Wotch Factor of Envy so the second personality "Envy" formed. Satella is the one that loves Subaru while Envy, who grips his heart, is a yandere

I wanna say this.... in the first scene of episode 13... In the Light Novel, Echidna and Minerva clearly said that Satella suffer of dual personalities. One is Satella, who want save Subaru. And another one is the Witch of Greed, who seek destruction. And until today, I don't know why they didn't show that in the anime.
