I feel like it’s unfair that black women are the only women held to this standard because a history of oppression they didn’t choose. White women dye their hair, wear extensions and wigs, get curly perms, keratin treatments, and are now even getting black hairstyles like braids and cornrows. Nobody ever finds the need to do a deep dive on their self hatred for themselves or if they like themselves or hate their race and what not. I’ve seen several videos of east asian people doing curly perks to get 4c hair? But black women are the only people who are policed about their hair choices and if that means they’re insecure or not. I recently started wearing my hair straight after being natural for 20 years. I never once hated my natural hair. But my hair would not retain length because my hair is fine and low density. I have been at the same length for forever. I tried protective styles, head wraps, leaving it alone completely, wash and gos. It wouldn’t grow. So i tried being a straight natural and told myself if it didn’t work, i’d chop my hair off and start again. And my hair is tailbone length after 4 years. I did what i needed to reach my goals. And my curl pattern is still 95% in tact. I feel like every black woman’s relationship with their hair is personal based on their personal experiences and their own mental health. My parents always told me my natural hair was beautiful. So I was never felt to feel my hair was ugly. That is not ever black woman’s experience. I will never judge any black girl on what she chooses to do with her hair. It is truly not my business. And I wish we’d stop trying to psychoanalyze us because what they choose to do. I mean it’s a bunch of natural girls in the community complaining about how they don’t agree with straight natural hair. But you clicked the video and saw the title? Idk i think we are very mean to each other for no reason. And at the end of the day, if someone wants their hair back they can just cut it

All that beautiful hair of yours represents YEARS of care and dedication. If you enjoy it, keep it. Because as the years progress, you might find that (1) you don't have the time to invest in regrowing it, and (2) because shorter hair is the default for women of a more mature age, that shorter-hair look might be more appealing to you in 10 or 15 years from now. So, embrace it while you're very young and have the energy to care for it!

I honestly understand why you’d straighten your hair… for the sake of manageability and convenience. It doesn’t necessarily means that you hate your natural hair. I personally am still trying to manage my natural hair in its curly state. I prefer it curly and natural because it is my God-given hair. I don’t want it to be straight permanently. Relaxers are over for me. However, the longer it gets and the harder it is for me to maintain it in its coily state. So I feel you…

I also started wearing my hair straight more often. I was a twist out queen for years, but I've noticed over the years that my hair started to lose some of its curl memory or elasticity. So, I started wearing more wash and go's and my curls became more uniform over time and the elasticity and curls I remembered came back. However, I was battling more knots at the ends, thus needing to trim my hair more often, which affected my length retention. My hair journey has taught me that too much of any hairstyle isn't the best for my hair texture (pretty similar to yours), so I'm going to put myself on a rotatating schedule for a couple of months and see how it goes, between twist outs, wash and gos, pressing my hair and protective styling, mostly with my own hair. I've been able to successfully do each of these styles well, but I always run into issues when I do any one of them exclusively for long periods of time. Hopefully, I don't ruin all 18 inches my hair with too much manipulation, but I agree with you. I love having the option to make intentional choices about my hair and for now, I'm choosing to have some fun with the versatility of it.

You hit the nail on the head about the informed decision!! I have recently decided to start blow drying my hair regularly (my hand eye coordination to flat iron is not there yet 😂) I’m a mom now, my daughter will only know me for having natural hair, but she will see pics of me with a fro, locs, and my hair straight. This is literally why I joined the movement. To show my daughter and future generations God made you perfect but you can be like every other woman and enjoy playing with and styling your hair. Being a straight natural is completely different from relaxing. Our health matters!

I like having my straight for a period of time, I get to see my length and I like being able to kinda roll out of bed and it’s done, however I hate how careful I have to be with working out, the weather, etc. I’m also older now and I’m finding that my twist outs, braid outs, etc have me looking like a kid and I’m in my 30s😂! Roothie - I LOVED this video & hearing your thoughts. I’m watching while doing my own wash day & I couldn’t agree more! Life has been BUSY & something has to give, and the first thing I could think of was my hair. Earlier this year, I decided to use heat in my hair more because my hair really does thrive when it’s stretched. It’s why I’m getting braids next week. In regards to it following a trend and representing Blackness, I don’t necessarily think it needs to be one or the other. Both can exist at the same time. Personally, I do still want to wear my hair natural & limit silk presses (I think of the little Black girls I see at the school I work at & how that representation is important). However, I will be wearing more stretched styles because if anything, I think it can display the variety of what our hair can do. At the end of the day, people will do what they want because it’s their hair. Your hair is GORGEOUS & whatever you do with it, it will always look AMAZING!

What sense does it make for a white woman who has cury hair to want straight hair…and then another white woman puts her down for ‘self hating’? Its the same thing when a black woman is put down for doing something different to her hair whether it be straight, curly, wig, etc.! I think all women should feel free to do whatever they like to do to their hair. Its JUST hair! Of course take care of it. But you do what YOU want with YOUR hair! ❤

I am Black, French/Congolese and I found those "issues" around Black women straightening their hair ridiculous if that's the look they're going for. And I also have 0 problem with grown Black women ( not kids/ not teenagers) who choose to relax their hair in 2023. What I think is a pitty and sad is Black women who never learned how to take care of their hair or their children's and/or don't even care about it. But between natural women always wearing straight wigs or natural women who choose to wear their own hair straight. I would personally choose the latter because I have never enjoyed the weaves or wigs. Natural, relaxed, or straightened my personal choice always is to wear my own hair, or african hair styles with extensions (twists, box braids...) I feel comfortable that way and look much better that way . Now for those who will say but overtime heat will damage your hair...it will change the hair texture...let's be real that is true. Long term it is pretty much unavoidable even with protein+ the best heat protactuon but if women are aware of that and OK with that why should I have a problem and in the end hair always grows back anyway. Hair is biologically dead so "damaged hair" is not the same as a damaged heart, damaged knees, damaged liver, or even damaged skin, so to me that's not a big deal.

If my hair is this long and thick I’m not worried. I do worry that my Latina & white friends can flat iron all they want and their people do not judge them. Also I don’t see this much criticism for weaves as for flat ironing our God given hair. 🤔🤔

I’m enjoying these videos from ! I would definitely recommend using a clarifying shampoo before each press,, it will make your hair feel better and remove any buildup. My stylist always does 2 to 3 shampoos when I get my press, start with the clarifying shampoo and do a moisturizing shampoo afterwards. And using a small tooth comb or even a clean boar bristle brush & small sections when flat ironing your hair helps with getting the hair smoother/straighter if that’s what you’re looking for. And I’m all for the doing what you want with your hair. I’m at this stage now that if I wanna wear it straight, I wear it straight if I want braids, I wear them. And still take care of my hair during the process.

I’m have 2 children under 4 and I’ve notice that my hair straight is way more manageable, quickly styled, a cleaner and sleeker look that I prefer and surprisingly, seems more healthy straightening. My natural is way more high maintenance, especially for this time of my life. I’m also not very attached to my hair either. I’ve cut it twice in the 10 years as well and if I want to go back, I can always cut it again. So straight hair is for me rn. I have a very short bob and don’t plan to even grow my hair out that much.

I don't think by doing any style to our real hair that we insult ourselves anymore than any other race, I also don't think we even should. I think fake hair/relaxers are more insulting, however its more nuance than that and can never be measured really. Its an insult if its from a place of self-hate specifically and most women either like changing their styles a lot or like more manageability is what i see. This world is so focused on heritage etc that its hard to grasp for some that everyone is more than their heritage/culture/ upbringing and that we don't need to live our lives proving anything to anyone.

But in terms of discovering our hair... I agree with you because I don't think I thought my hair could be as beautiful as it is without a relaxer. I fell in love with my hair again when I went natural, and I didn't think I would. I was so sick of weaves and glue-ins and sew-ins, and I hated sitting under the dryer for hours and I hated the relaxing process... And Yes, yes, even though I never got burned, going natural for me was because I just wanted something that was true to who I am. True to what God intended for me to have on my head..And my hair has grown longer stronger now more than it ever had previously, and I really love my hair. So I do agree with you that now we've gotten to a point where we know we can be natural and we can grow our hair in its natural state. And now we're kind of experimenting with our naturals, doing different things with it. We have gotten out of the learning stage. And now we're into the having fun stage, and I hope we stay here. Enjoying our hair straight or curly. We can do it all. And I love the way that we are loving ourselves more. We're accepting ourselves, and I think that's the number 1 thing. Loving and accepting what we were born with. Knowing nobody's better than us. We thought that we were less than, due to consistent sociatle brainwashing, and now we know that we're not. We're great if not greater than anybody else. Our versatility and creativity in and of itself means more than anything. Like, we are the most versatile of all the ethnicities on the planet!!! I’ve learned over the years It’s definitely NOT JUST HAIR. Some cultures have a spiritual meaning for their hair or it represented their economic status. Over the course of history it’s been proven others outside of us have had issues with our hair. That’s why it’s still such a big topic. In the late 1700s due to women of color being creative and standing out in society with how they styled and accessorized their hair, the Tignon Law was passed, which “prohibited Creole women of color from displaying ‘excessive attention to dress’ in the streets of New Orleans.” So they had to cover most of their hair by law. Once the United States took ownership of Louisiana through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the Tignon Laws were no longer enforced. Still, some enslaved and free women of African descent continued to wear headwraps as a symbol of resistance. By the end of the 19th century, many Black women began straightening their hair in order to blend into a society. We all know about Madame C.J Walker & her hair care products. First black woman to become a millionaire. Shows there was such a need and demand for black people needing help with their hair. Black pride movements of the 1960s and 70s, the afro became the hairstyle of choice. It was seen as a form of resistance. In the 2000s there was another hair movement. 2019 New York was the first state to pass the bill CROWN ACT, which Prohibits race discrimination based on natural hair or hairstyles. Currently on the Crown Act website 23 states have made this a law, 27 to go. You’ll find plenty of girls on social media recently still discussing how their natural hair is an issue in their corporate job. Another example Kids being sent home because of how their natural hair was styled (mind you they looked good). So when we say it’s just hair, it’s not. What other group of people receives those types of treatment? To us it’s what we know, it grows out like that but to some outside of us it’s a mystery, a distraction, or political resistance. I’m all for styling your hair how you want based on your schedule, your life, or style. I enjoy switching it up as well! I say all this to say the importance of knowing the history so people don’t try to erase it and rewrite it for us. Ps your hair looks beautiful 🧡

Indigenous copper colored people of Turtle Island the Niiji misidentified as African American black colored mulatto negro etc on the US census records were already in the lands known as the Americas before the colonizers came to take over their lands (Dan 2:43,44). African American is a misnomer. The term black is a social construct status meaning nonexistent or dead under the black codes color of law and has no legal standing and is actually a derogatory term Black is a color not a race, ethnicity or nationality. Ref:1828 Webster's Dictionary and The New Oxford American English Dictionary definition for Native American.

No, I don’t think it’s being a traitor to being black when I straighten my hair. That’s part of “BLACK Girl Magic”!!!! I can be curly one day and straight the next! I love my versatility! 😊

Nice video! Someone might have already said this, but really try to use the k18 correctly and be patient with it haha (i know i know..) Make sure to emulsify the k18 first, apply the amount recommended on the website and let it sit in your hair for 4 minutes before doing anything else (detangling etc). Not following these steps sadly doesn't ensure the intended results. And gurlll.....k18 is too expensive to not use it correctly😅😅

I want to become a straight hair natural. But I’m not sure how to properly moisturize my hair while wearing it straight. I also workout everyday and it always reverts and then idk what to do with it.

I'm able to stretch my 3C hair with twists. Your hair is much thicker than mine so I would do the same to avoid tangles. Do what u like!!! Haters be damned. Sorry. ❤

Do you have the best both worlds. you have the relaxer effect without the relaxer. Enjoy your hair.. I didn’t know I had beautiful curly hair until I was 50 years old. we as Black people discover the fabulousness about our self late. We came from a place of oppression that is a place

HOW YOU DECIDE TO WEAR YOUR NATURAL HAIR IS YOUR BUSINESS. ITS STILL NATURAL. NATURAL HAIR IS THE HAIR THAT COMES OUT OF YOUR SCALP WITH NOT CHEMICALS ADDED. IF YOU DECIDE TO PRESS IT WITH A FLAT IRON OR HOT COMB ITS STILL NATURAL HAIR! LOL. EVEN IF YOU DYE IT. IT STILL NATURAL HAIR! AS LONG AS YOU DONT PERM IT. ITS STILL NATURAL HAIR. WAKE UP SISTERS! DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE THAT OTHER NATURAL HAIR PEOPLE TELL YOU ON HOW TO WEAR YOUR NATURAL HAIR THAT ITS NOT NATURAL ANY LONGER BECAUSE YOU FLAT IRON IT OR USE A HOT COMB IN IT. ITS STILL NATURAL WHEN THAT WATER HITS IT. IT WILL ALWAYS REVERT BACK TO A KINKY STATE. THAT IS WHAT BLACK NATURAL HAIR DOES. IT'S SO VERSATILE AND BEAUTIFUL IT'S REMARKABLE. HATERS! NATURAL HAIR GROWS. I BET MOST PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE WEARING A WEAVE OR A WIG! YOUR HAIR IS GREAT. YOU GO GIRL!

Now you have me ponderig about straightening my hair, but the way this Florida humidity is set up.......ion think thats a good idea. I think it depends on the person tbh theres people out their who LOVE their curls, but like you said, it's a convenience thing for sure. The GORLS are lying if they say straighter / looser hair types don't have it easier! Of course everyone goes through their own individual hair struggles or issues, but it takes time to do wash N go's/Twist outs/braid outs/protective styles all the time AND worry about humidity/the weather that day etc. As long as its not rooted in self hate I say go for it! Your hair is seriously goals
