I have had so many styles and being a straight natural is one of the easiest ways for me to maintain my hair. My hair is heat trained so it doesn't even revert in the humid heat when I lived in atlanta. I don't care about my curl pattern because I wear my hair straight. I unwrap and go. I talk a lot about heat training on tiktok and I get a lot of flack about it but I will continue to stand by heat training because it is a great alternative to relaxers.

Great video! I just recently became a straight haired natural. I love the pros of waking up not spending 30 minutes to prep my hair for a style. While I wore my hair in its natural state for 15 years, I saved money not going to the salon. As a senior adult I found some of my natural hair styles looked too childish, and that was a wasn't a good look for me. I sweat moderately when I workout, but it does not bother me at all, because I know how to fix it. I only straighten my hair once a month and I do have 4 c hair. I just put a little moisturizer on my edges and wrap it nightly. I don't worry about have laid edges or that sort of stuff. Being a straight hair natural has been worth it for my lifestyle.

@@daniellepurcell7221 I wear a headband around my edges and wear my hair in a top knot. After working out, I let my hair and edges dry completely. I then put a light moisturizer burdock root butter cream on my edges and wrap my hair. You don't have to use the moisturizer I just do because my hair is gray dry and stubborn.

SHN is life. I have baby fine textured hair but high density. Keratin treatments just twice a year, flat ironing every couple of months with just blow drying in between and Olaplex 3 every wash day has helped me get close to bra strap length. Fairy knots and crazy splits 99% gone.

What kind of products do you use. I’m thinking of going “straight natural” just because I’m tired of fairy knots and my coils tangling up. But with curly hair it’s easy to spray some water and leave in creams every other day(s). So any tips on how to moisturize my hair/ends as a straight natural?

I just flat ironed my hair yesterday and. Let me tell you I literally combed it down and it took maybe 3 minutes and I was out the door. I like it so far just easy. I hope I can retain better length. I’m turning 41 tomorrow and i don’t have time anymore. I want things as soft and easy as possible, even down to doing my hair. Trust my growing up my mom always blow dried my hair and protective style I had the longest thickest hair. I never knew what a single strand knot was or a split end til I wore my natural hair in adult hood

Something to consider if you sweat alot is Cezanne Keratin treatments - it's 100% formaldehyde free (and all -aldehyde producing chemicals). Your hair is still natural but it stays straight easier, straightens easier and is temporary

In terms of daily styling ease, being a SHN is the closest thing to having long dreadlocks. I had DLs for over 20 years because it was the easiest way to care for my hair. Switched to other natural styles about 3 years ago and went full SHN about a year ago. I just couldn't do all that work it takes to care for twistouts, braidouts, wash-n-gos, or even just plain twists. My hair always tangled hopelessly, especially at the ends, and I needed to use sooooo many products to get it to look like anything and stay moisturized. Now I can just do a deep conditioner and protein/bond treatment a couple times a month and each day have very little I need to do. I have had to accept that my roots are going to be puffy though, because post-menopause, you're going to sweat some every night no matter what you do. That's ok. My hair is getting more sparse as I get older too, so the puffy roots gives me needed volume.

This was very helpful. I was considering being a straight natural, but I'm going to have to reconsider. I am a heavy HEAVY sweater, and I sweat particularly in my head! I also live in the Caribbean, and we have two seasons, dry and rainy. So it's always either hot and humid, or wet and humid. I think I'll just gently heat train my hair over time, elongate my 4c curls, by blow drying my hair after every wash day, then ponytail tail it with twists at the ends, or something.

I love what you said about dealing with the negative perception from society in regards to Black women wearing their hair straight. I battled internally with this myself, but I came to realize that it is simply my preference. Just like we have styling preferences when it comes to clothing, makeup, nails, etc.- hair preferences also exist. How often do you wash and straighten your hair? I am trying to figure out a good wash schedule for myself that won't cause any damage to my hair.

Exactly! 🎯 It’s all a personal preference & no woman should be shamed for doing what she likes & works best for her. I wash & straighten my hair at every 1.5-2 weeks. Depends on how I feel bc I really like having a clean scalp.

I enjoyed being a straight hair natural for about a year but I’m back curly again. Idk thick coily Afros I just love 🥰 I’ve done relaxers, I’ve done pixie cut, I’ve don’t straight hair natural and now I’m choosing to be fully natural. I get keratin treatments every few months and I still consider myself a straight natural for sure since it washes out gradually over the weeks I can make my hair as straight as I want, but it’s also easy to put it into curly styles if I choose to. Regarding working out Gym wraps are a wonderful tool Keep it on & Keep your ponytail until your hair is dry then even a cool blow dryer can tame any proof. And I’m totally with you on the clip ins I own every texture from silky straight to kinky curly

Your hair is heat trained not straight natural. Heat training is using heat to relax the hair texture. You no longer or barely have a curl pattern. Straight naturals still have their natural curl pattern. Theybjust choose to where their hair straight more often than curly. I'm straight natural, have been for years, and my hair is still curly. Pattern has not changed.
@ChaviAllie

Hi! You’re correct, my hair is heat trained! & I am also a straight hair natural because my hair isn’t relaxed or chemically processed. Straightening my hair is how I choose to style it but at the end of the day it’s still natural hair even if my curls are loosened. By your definition when you straighten your own hair, you’d no longer be natural bc you’re “relaxing your curl pattern” even if it’s temporary. Lol But it’s totally cool to agree to disagree ❤️
