Always in the 'happy place' too, when I'm trying out new or different stones. We're never too "old" to gain new honing experiences and make fresh observations. You've helped me enjoy, appreciate and learn lot's over the years. Keep doing what you do Brother

Always nice to hear your thoughts. The 4k and the 12k is really nice in this lineup. I have the 1,4,9 and 12k. The 12k has a unique feel. It is also a stone you don't need to worry too much about overdoing it on. These stones leaves a different fingerprint then Naniwa and Shaptons. It might not mean much at the end of the day though. There is a retailer in Finland who offer these at reasonable prices.

Hey, than you for watching and commenting! I didn't see any unreasonable pricing on these stones, but my sources are mostly in Japan so that may be a factor. The feel was nice, maybe not unique but that depends on what you're used to honing on. Coming from Super Stones - yeah, wildly different. I do like the stone but not jazzed enough to want another in the series.

@@KeithVJohnson1 I don't use my 1k that much. If I had only tried that one I would probably not get any other. However, the 4k and 12k is quite different. The 9k is also not that fun to use. I have a Shiro Suita that actually feels quite similar. They are a joy to use with razors, but will not compete with a good jnat edge for razors. That is just my experience.

For sure, I feel the same way about all synths actually. I hardly use synths above 5k for this reason. I don't even use the 5k that often really.

@@KeithVJohnson1 The 4k Morihei is closer to a 2k Naniwa pro if you judge by the scratch pattern. It actually works quite well for cutlery, and as a jump point to a natural stone for razors. I was hoping that they worked well with slurry. Wrong assumption:)

Really nice mini review on that stone, Keith! I came across the website that carries them a couple weeks ago and was curious how it worked with razors. I really appreciate you taking the time to give your opinions on that 1k. Thanks to you, I may look at that when my Shapton 1.5 needs replacing. Bravo Keith! 👏

Thank you for watching and commenting! The Morihei stones have been around for a lil while, since at least 2018/19 I think. There are several sites selling them. I don't think I'd sub the Morihei for a Shap 1500 on a regular basis but its a pretty interesting stone.

I originally got this stone to try out for bevel setting and polishing. I can't say it was for me, especially polishing it leaves deeper rogues scratches than many other 1k's I have used. It still gets the job done, but it required more work than other 1ks to get rid of all the scratches it left for no appreciable boost in speed. I think for people who want scratch-less edges on their razors (as you've covered doesn't really matter) this could be a poor choice. Possible I also just got a bad version of the stone, but I do kind of doubt that with any synthetic now adays. It did feel nice to do bevel resets on though, you are right I was just hoping for more performance out of it.

I wouldn't expect a 1k to polish, not in a razor bevel set scenario. It's relative though, if I am coming off a 400x - with a chef knife - then this or any 1k polishes that work. Still not 'polished in the 'mirror' sense but still polished compared to 400x. Any stone in this 1k 'zone' is going to have 12-16 um abrasive, anything that coarse will only polish to a point. The Morihei is solidly in place there. But a 1k Chosera are .a little finer, at about 11.5 um I thinik, while an old-school soakers will be even coarser.

@@KeithVJohnson1 Yes, I mean specifically "polish" in a progression lineup (with the reference to erasing the scratches it leaves). Phrasing I suppose. I expect it to be around 18-20um as that is what the JIS identifies, +/- some obviously. I found it left new scratches I usually consider performing more like an P800/24um stone (tested it on an already polished surface). Of course, that is my eye and estimation, but I've polished enough knives to know how long I need to work something out usually and they are deeper than I'd expect from a Chosera or even King. I know a lot of people chase that perfect haze on the razor's edge, and if they are, I think its best avoided. I've only ever tested one though so again - maybe mine was off spec or something.

Without seeing what you're looking at I can't say, but for sure this stone here didn't leave striations out of the norm. The razor in the video was started on a 500x and the resulting work on the Morihei was very consistent over it, and not out of the ballpark for it's 1k genre. By genre, I mean what vendors are hawking in that zone. JIS rank, for 1k - I think, is 16 um, but in a world where a cubic particle has the same grit as one shaped like a golf ball, it's sort of irrelevant. The Chosera 800x is still 'finer' than JIS 1000 and might leave a brighter finish than the Morihei. I don't think any maker subscribes 100% to JIS, it's more like a guide than a rule. Going back/forth between the Morihei, the Shapton 1500 and a GS 1000, it sits solidly in the mix. Seemed to cut about as fast as the GS 1k, but the Pro 1.5k does leave a brighter finish, sure. Cutting efficacy off the Moreihei has proven to be on point too, which is what really matters. Still, the Morihei certainly didn't leave anything like what a King regular or deluxe 1k leaves behind. Was very consistent actually.

I'm about to start shaving with a straight razor. What grit would you recommend as a finishing stone and could you recommend a razor or brand in the $150 - $250 range? I learned to sharpen knives during the lockdown and have been a subscriber for some time. Always enjoyed your content. Thanks.

Hi, that is really too big a topic to take on in these comments. I usually tell everyone the same thing though - join a forum, or FB Groups, get involved with the discussions, see what people are doing. Get some razors honed/finished by a few guys using different systems and see what edges you like best, find out what they used and go in that direction.

I always find forums suffer from "aggressive ignorance". (If I had to call it something). I remember asking on one if it'd be better to use grease for a ball bearing in a pocket knife. They all told me they use some cheesy named old. I got alot of offended scoffing when i told them thanks, but i wasn't interested in oil I asked for grease. God forbid you colour outside the lines. It confuses the sheep.
