Straight Razor Honing: How Much Torque Is Too Much? 🤔

Good visual, I do believe torque is needed early on, in my process. In some cases, like a coti, all the way while slowly reducing until final water laps. But that’s me and how I do it. There is always too much pressure we should avoid, as you pointed out, it is razor dependent. Again, nice visual and explanation.

Theres a spanish youtuber called "Las Navajas de Verdakrajono" that makes razor content, and he hones his blades with a borderline painful to watch amount of pressure, almost like a knife, but he seems to get good results. seemed to a bit excessive to me, but the "only weight of the blade, or less" crowd also feel a bit rigid in their thinking. There has to be a middle ground that is both efficient and doesnt bend the bevel to hell

​@@devanjackson509 yeah, i was more talking about how some people hone even wedges with only the weight of the blade, under the assumption that they can abrade the steel with "shallower scratches" that way, not really worried about the bending

Great video Devan! I think in person you didn't see it as well but looking at the recording you can definitely see the flex there between the two razors. When you use this to gage do you stay under the pressure you used with the pipe or do you add a little more due to the wider stone? So with a wider stone you're hitting a larger area of the razor so that pressure is distributed in a wider range as opposed to a narrower piece that has more pressured added to it? Not sure if i'm explaining myself well here.

You’re correct that when you lay the entire length of the blade on the stone that the flex dynamic changes. I’m going to leave it up to the viewer to decide how close to the flex point one should go but I try to stay just under it for the most part in terms of max torque. Thanks for watching!
