Your video is fine. I have a Wostenholm Sheffield razor with the Norton 4000/8000 stones and a 12000 Shapton stone with a suede leather strop, lightly pasted with CrOx. I have followed various how to videos, but cannot get this razor to shave comfortably, no matter what. I have arrived at a degree of sharpness, but apparently not where it should be, judging by shaving videos. I have no comment to make on your correction of your blade, except that I wonder why anyone who owns a straight razor would go to so much trouble, since my experience with straight razors and the videos of other guys shaving, reveals that most of us who use straights, shave mostly with the last inch or so of the toe and most often less than a half inch.

Barry, have you ever taken your Wostenholm Sheffield razor all the way back to set the bevel? Setting the bevel is the most important part of honing, everything comes from a properly set bevel. I understand what your talking about when you say most other guys only use 1/2" to 1" on the toe. But what if you could use the complete blade edge and use whatever part of the blade works the best for different parts of your face. Wouldn't that be amazing? Well, I don't know any way to do that except to use the Sharpie pen trick and if your stone licks it up equally on both sides, then my bevel must be OK. This is where I am now, but I still cannot shave so that my face resembles a baby's bottom. I can think of only one other possibility and that is that I am using too much or too little pressure on the stones. I have also tried strokes with the cutting edge leading and with the spine leading - no difference. Any suggestions ?

Barry have you tried running the edge over a wet thumb nail with by the weight of the blade only? If the edge fells like it's trying to dig in the full length of the blade your bevel is set. If the edge slides smoothly over your wet thumb nail then the bevel isn't set. Check out this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2Kxh4d-g6uXjdk in it I'm setting the bevel on an old Wade & Butcher. Hello Eric ! Well today I finally was brave enough to attempt whining a old razor I bought. It too a couple hours to get it set and sharp but oh my lol. Ended with 10k fire hose then the ol strop. Hi My cut throat is dead straight with no wobble, why does only one side of my razor remove hair, but when I flip the cut throat over it won`t cut at all, Also the side that cut does that mean the bevel that rests on the skin is angles correctly to cut or is the bevel not on the skin doing the cutting,

Great questions Piece Toyou! ;) More than likely you are handling your straight razor at different shaving angles from one side to the other. Lay your razor flat and raise up the spine a spine width on both sides and you should be able to shave on both sides of your razor. Eric i have a couple old Sheffield razors and I have issues getting the bevel set near the shoulder. To me, it doesn't look like there is a stabilizer getting in the way. It seems like there is more wear behind where the stabilizer should be (the area between the shoulder and the scales).Any suggestions? It could be my honing technique?

I have discovered a much less painful way of honing badly warped razors... convex whetstones! Its awesome you should try it! This is the same thing that happens to me when I try this, one side needs way more work than the other, you end up with a very un even razor, angles are waaay different on both sides due to spine wear... western straights are such a pain! Kamisoris don't seem to have this problem very often.

Yes, I saw The Superior Shave's video on the convex stone looks very interesting. As for the hone wear I do try to work on both sides about the same amount. So I never have had any uneven angles by the time I set the bevel on a straight razor. Thanks for watching and the great comment! 😀

Adventures In Wet Shaving: I have a DMT Coarse and think it can be very useful, but you might want to caution users that the diamonds can become dislodged if too much pressure is applied. I did this with a cleaver when I was new to sharpening and impatient. Best of luck with your channel. Thanks for being open to suggestions.

Great question Rei! ;) You should do more on the uneven side to get it worn from the heel to the toe on the spine evenly and then stop. But don't over do one side or the bevel on the edge will be different widths on each side. The bevel should be about the same width on both side for your razor to shave well. Thanks for the video Eric. A few question. What grit stone were you using? Also, I notice most of your razors are new. Do you buy vintage razors? If you do, I assume you work on them to bring them back to shave ready. I think some videos on how to buy ebay razors (since you really can't get a great idea of their condition by pictures) would be nice to see. I'm referring to restorable ones that are in rough shape, but still restorable. For instance getting nicks out of the edges that may be a larger than what a normal honing can take care of.

What is the difference between a X Stroke and a Half stroke ? And the meaning of a lap in a stroke ?

Great questions Vasco! ;) An X-Stroke is where you start with the heel of your blade sliding it at a diagonal across the stone to the toe of the blade with the edge leading... mainly use with skinnier stones and on smiling blades. Half Strokes are where you slide the blade toward the edge and then reverse it and slide the blade back to the spine... these are the most aggressive strokes because your honing in both directions with each stroke. The meaning of a lap while honing for me is a complete stroke either one stroke with the edge leading in the case of a X-Stroke or two strokes with a Half Stroke. i have an old wade and butcher huge blade. has a big smile. when i hone it always seems like the edge is uneven. some parts are shave ready when others are not. I use a rolling stroke but nothing has changed.

Great video! You ought to try a Dmt XXC. Man they are fast! I've heard Atoma plates are more durable. The Dmt's wear out fast. * Edit * Lol I forgot to ask a question. I know on your latest video you use Kapton tape. Is it more durable than the electrical tape? I my experience the electrical tape wears fast, and leaves the diamond stone kinda gummy. Just wanted to get your feedback.

Great question Michael! ;) The Kapton tape is thinner then electrical tape and does seem to me to be much tougher and doesn't gum up the diamond plate. I can imagine how fast the Dmt XXC most be... @@AdventuresInWetShaving good evening! I love you videos! Ive watched alot. Im having trouble honing a gold edge dubl duck and i searched you videos to find a geometry correction video. It is my favorite razor and i spent 40 mins on my 1k trying to set the bevel. I believe that there is a geometry issue. I dont feel comfortable in my ability to say for sure if it is. I also dont feel comfortable in .y ability to correct it if it is a geometry issue. Im more afraid of messing up my favorite razor than fixing it lol. I was reaching out to see if you could help me correct it? Or help me distinguish what exactly is going on.. Thank you sir

Great video, BUT... You should have mentioned the stone you used (or at least the grit size). I caught the gist of what you were doing, but an inventory of your tools would have been immensely better. I also could have used a bit more explanation as to the "why". I understood it after watching, however, an instructional video needs more... "instruction".

Robert, that is a DMT D8C Diamond Plate that I'm using in this video (approximately 325 grit) my bad. So your saying; I need to work on my delivery and explanation of the purpose (the why for the process), including the different tools that I'm using in the video. @@AdventuresInWetShaving This is wild! I bought my DMT course Diamond Plate just to dress my Norton 4k/8k stone-did not know that you could use it to set the bevel! Then again, I gave up trying to set the bevel using a Naniwa 1K, and various other stones, over a one year period several years ago. Learning how to properly hone, IMHO, is very difficult to learn solo. I learned how to shave with a disposable blade straight razor in about a year and sharpen my own edged knives (kitchen, machetes and folding). I perform hospital mnt. for a living and razor honing is not easy to learn, IMHO. If you don't set the bevel, any other work is just a waste of elbow grease-My .02-John in Texas

After trying for 4 years, with a well known online honer (Sham), I gave up for about 10 years. Could not find anybody locally to teach me, and I have taught myself A LOT of skills (I perform hospital mnt. ). Bought three disposable blade razors (including two nice Japanese knock offs with Japanese blades), along with a Gillette Fatboy and happily shaved for a long time. After looking at some of your videos and some of Ryky’s (a Japanese knife sharpener), I saw the light and discovered how to use my already bought Japanese Chosera on my 12K Naniwa! There was no need to set the bevel-just passing on the 12K followed by stropping, as your video showed. What sux is that I have around 18 QUALITY vintage razors that Sham honed and have been covered in Camelia oil for years, as I am leary of taking them to any stone with my skillsets. I have a Naniwa 1K, a Norton 4k/8K, a Naniwa 12K, a stone holder, a chosera, a Nagura, spray bottle, DMT coarse , 3 barbers hones, several loupes and even a calibration blade and microscope! Am wondering if my Barber hones just need a Nagura passed over them-any suggestions? Learning to straight razor shave was easy by comparison!-John in Texas

Great question John! ;) Sure, give your Nagura a go on your Barbers Hones and you could even try your Coarse DMT to make a slurry on one to test out as well. Obviously something is wrong with razor. You cannot shave with a uneven or a not straight edge. That razor should be returned to the manufacturer for a replacement or money back.

Definitely if this was an expensive straight razor I would have sent it back for a replacement or I would have gotten my money back. Hey, drmatt357 I have only been into straight razor shaving for a little over a year. But right from the beginning I started honing my own straight razor and I could never get the rolling stroke to work. At that point I started correcting the spine of the razor at first without using tape to cover the edge and found that that lead to more hone wear then I wanted so I started putting tape on the edge which helped a lot. As you know most people consider hone wear on their straight razors to be a bad thing. If you look at almost all of my razors they have a good bite of hone were. That's because I fell it's better to correct the geometry then to try to work around it. Then when I was your video I felt that if you were ok showing this technic to the world. Then I would show what I have been doing as well. I don't blended the spine and edge together on the diamond plate as you do. I would do that on a bevel setting stone when I set the bevel. I'm sorry if I offended you by making the video, it wasn't my intention. And that back bevel trick is brilliant! I have a straight razor that I could use that on. Please let me know if I can video that or not. Again sorry if I offended you, I really respect all you do.

Peter, this is a learning exercise and the best thing to use is a real cheap straight razor so if you mess it up it's still okay. I have done this with more expensive straight razors since and it works well.
