In my opinion a straight razor blade is bad for self defense the blade is thin and brittle with no point for thrusting nor a guard or lock the only plus is its sharp

Hey i am a British fella who is concerned about self defence. As i will soon be travelling to a certain Latin American country. Which has a reputation for crime and a high murder rate. Though i will be taking every precaution during my stay and i did a lot of boxing when i was younger and can handle myself. I think a blade would be an extra precaution and if the worst came to the worst, then it could save my life. I am specifically interested in getting a straight blade, because you are permitted to travel with one on an air plane. Just as long as it is not in your hand luggage. So if i put it in a bag full of shaving accessories and put that bag in my suitcase. Then i would not be breaking any rules, as far as airport security is concerned. I would really appreciate it, if you could advise me on the best sort of reasonably priced switch blade, with a locking mechanism, that i could take with me on this trip.

@@Joeblogs263 I think it would be pushing your luck with a switchblade knife. A simple wooden handled folding knife that is 3 inches in length will probably be more than you need.

@@GunCollector007 oh did i say switch blade lol. No i meant a straight blade shaving razor. Stored in a bag full of shaving accessories in my suitcase and then stored in a sheath in my boot. After i arrive in the country and have left the airport. As it is obviously very very stupid to be pulling out a knife in an airport. I would be putting the straight blade razor (which must have a locking mechanism) in a sheath in my boot when i get to the hotel and leaving it there for the duration of my stay. Then removing the knife and putting it back in a shaving accessory bag. When it is time to leave the hotel and get a taxi back the airport. Ordinarily i would never carry a knife.. However this Latin American country has a horrifyingly high murder rate and it may save my life. The advantage of taking a shaving razor is that it is perfectly legal and acceptable to take it on an air plane. As long as it is not in your hand luggage So i could just put it in a bag of shaving accessories in my suitcase.

Both my granddad's carried a straight razor. Dad told me his dad shaved the buttons off a dude's shirt once. I was taught to knife fight in Boy Scouts. One kid has a stick. The other kid had to gain control of the stick or disarm without touching the stick. If you touched the stick you got cut.

As the song Bad Leroy Brown goes, "He's got a 32. gun in his pocket for fun, he's got a razor in his shoe!" These were carried for years and would surely get the job done. But living in the north where I do, people wear very heavy clothes in the winter, and I would prefer a tool with better penetration and not really so much on cutting, just my two cents.

I carry a straight razor for self-defense, and when you hold it in the proper way, it is basically locked. Just wrap your thumb and your index finger around it the grippy piece of metal that is before the blade. Edit: I don't think all of them have the grippy part, so that information might not apply in most cases.

my father carried one in his boot top from time to time, there is also a quite real Italian tradition of razor fighting , youtube videos or not. Although I believe the origins goes back to a knife called a rasolino which wasn't actually a shaving razor.

It was called like that beacause it had no point and it looked like a razor. This comes from the Giolitti law in the 1800s that limited the lenght of knives with a point, but it was more lax on flat top blades.

You might be interested in the self defense cultures of western europe regarding folding knives. You can find things about france when you look for the parisian apaches. I shave myself with a straight razor for a few years now. In my pov they`re more a offensive than a defensive weapon, if they`re used as a weapon. Fighting is very different to ambushing someone (although it can be a good idea as a self defender to surprise someone). Traditional two handed folding knives like the cudeman 308, mercator, doukdouk, vendetta, navajas, yataghan navajas or whatever can be used more effective, since they are better to grip, better to carry, safer to deploy and give more options.

Check out the Petrified Fish PFE04. It's like a classic straight razor design but beefed up for EDC + a liner lock. The deep hollow grind makes for fantastic box cutting and I'm sure would slice up any attacker better than the olds!

That's great for a knife, but one of the "benefits" of carrying an actual straight razor is that it's not a knife, it's a razor. In some states, carrying a knife like the PFE04 in your pocket would be a felony, but carrying a shaving implement in your boot wouldn't be an issue. Plus, if you're like me and you shave with a straight razor, you're never at a loss.

In my head it would be better closed and used in a closed fist or jabbing down out of the bottom of your hand. Forget even opening it, because if the other person knows how to fight at all that little blade isn't going to do enough damage quickly enough or deep enough the way you recommend holding it. I wish i had one it looks like a friction folder where it's impossible to fold back all the way open(unless the back pin breaks) in which case simply holding it open against the back pin might work. But it really would be too slow unless you were ambushing someone or able to sneak it out.. just my opinion. Hope you and the fam are well brother!

A straight razor cuts so clean it would not inflict any pain if someone's adrenalin was pumping. Unless you cut the throat , juggler or a femoral artery high on the thigh. Plus in a wet situation a razor just becomes a liability. I prefer a full tang fixed blade tanto design from 4 in up to 12 inches for self protection but you know the saying dont bring a knife to a gun fight. If you pull that knife your opponent should only see it after youve done what you intended on doing with it. Plus most criminal have a gun on them or nearby. So a knife is a good tool a good backup. Carry a firearm for modern day protection IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE OR A FAMILY MEMBER OR NEIGHBOR.

imo, a dagger (or incidentally, in second place, a fish knife) is going to always be best. i still haven't found a perfect tac dagger that would fufill my imagination on the subject. my thought is that, firstly, it should be able have that increased smooth-stabbing potential. it should have quite a thin profile (but thick enough to break through clothing and light bone with ease). most knives have thicker profiles in general because they're made to do repeated heavy utilitarian stuff. but i would like the idea of one that can go through anything like butter without hitting snags like you see happen when you really get down to business with a thicker blade. for instance, it hits a bunched fold of clothing and it stops any capacity... if you try this with a thin shaving blade, you see that it seems like it can damage more and you can dislodge it a bit easier and slice and dice. razor sharp, LONG, double-edged, and on the thinner side.
