If I went too slow, my dad would say “We ain’t building a piano”, then when I’d speed up he’d say, “why don’t you take a little pride in your work”. His objective to drive me crazy was well achieved.

This is one of the best ways to ensure work is kept to a high standard. I used this method 2 days ago to flatten and level a ceiling on a job, where we installed a new RSJ within the ceiling void. Plasterers will thank you if you do this as it makes thier life so much easier to achieve a flat and fine finish 👍 ah the humble string line, a builders best friend 😉

I had a guy on my crew that was special forces as a younger man. My crew did mainly metal roofs and I was pretty critical about our cuts and how everything looked. Aesthetics were just as important to me as function. It drove him crazy. He cussed like a sailor and would always say "goddamn it Donnie, it's not like we're building fucking bombs." Hardest work guy I ever met. Worked twice as hard when you pissed him off. Which was pretty often.

Not on this type of construction, it’s a mass fill cavity batt. The type you may be thinking of is the dense pir board insulation that we had to use special clips for on the wall ties to hold it in position.

The thing about this is... I'm a DIYer and refurbishing an old stone farmers cottage here (west coast of Ireland) & NOTHING is very straight, plumb or square... I've learned (the hard way) that if you ensure you incorporate that level of accuracy in your work as you go, you save time later... Case in point... I'm building 3x2 studded walls against all the inside stone walls with a 25mm insulation sheet thermal break and rigid in between the wall studs... anyhoo... making sure these walls are square to each other makes SUCH a difference when it comes to laying floor vinyl laminate (no DPC so no mdf laminate for me😉)... also 100% vertical studs are easier to screw to, I use a cheap laser & hit a mark at the top and scribe the plasterboard... easy peasy... I know I'm not doin it the "professionals" way but I AM building in the accuracy required... This house is 100 years old.. I'm lowering every ceiling Full re-wire Full re-plumb 25mm insulation + 18mm ply floors (before final covering) Re-slated roof... And lots more .. 🙄 But I'm enjoying learning the trades as I go along ... the lads here at skillbuilder are also a great help, its what youtube is best at... 😎👍☘🍺
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
That is great to hear your views on this. We all learn as we go along and never stop learning but the saying "Start right and you finish right" is key to the whole thing. If you think "Ah the wall is a little out of plumb but the plasterer will put it right" you will be in for a dissapointment. As you say, when it comes to the tiles and flooring it will show up.

What size are the timber wall plates, 4x2? Doesn't building inspector get upset that you haven't used 4x3?
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
If the drawing calls for 4x3 then that is what is used but you build to a set of plans that are passed. If they are passed then the Building Inspector is there to make sure you do what is on the drawing. If the builder wants to start beefing everything up without raising the price then he can do that and get his reward in heaven.

They do not build like they used to I am sure you will have heard that saying many times...That string line Wallplate reminds me of the job we did many moons ago in Brighton for the local MP. The Mp had a huge garden size of a football pitch, Mp had planned to put a "Giant Wood Manufactured Laminated Gazebo" on top of his existing huge triple garage overlooking his Football Pitch. From day one the Mp told us all about this company that could build "Wood Laminated Gazebos" and how good they are with their product. The Mp told us not to get involved just let them come measure up and go away. Okay, we said. The two chaps came from Gazebo Company would not even give you the time of day we had tried to tell them they did not want to know. We watched from above on the main roof and could see the guys measuring up making mistakes. Weeks later "Gazebo" arrived pre-made in Laminated sections that did not fit the wall plate. (Surprise Surprise) The mega simple mistake they made was to measure only the front wall of the garage and one side. The right-hand side wall was built to the wrong side of the brickwork line in the footings about 100 years ago ie approx 250 mm out. The back wall was approx 250 longer than the front wall seen happen a few times over the years on older buildings. We ended up erecting Gazebo and fixing the mistake Mp was not impressed with Gazebo Company. One loop with a string line and hook on nail saves faffing about good work James well done.
