I love the body shape and love that it can be played on the left thigh! I love the fact that it is really light which saves your back on long practice sessions. I love that it comes in a 4 and a 5-string as i am currently shopping for a 5-string for a more melodic approach to bass playing. They make great instruments. Two things that make me wonder... Some of their own signature artists don't use the Strandberg design neck. Also, they have the pickups at strange angles. They aren't angled in between the angles of the bridge saddles and the frets. Maybe they are angled this way due to experimenting with tone relative to position, but I've never seen angles like these, relative to the bridge and fret angles. I don't doubt that they are really nice, and sound very good. I think all the body shapes in the video are nice looking, and would all feel very good n my large hands. Is this the company that closed its original shop and has all their instruments in Asian facilities? I don't recall. If so, then it's good to hear that they are still making higher quality basses.

As a guitar player with fan fret experience looking at basses the "traditional" fingering for some chord shapes are less effective depending on where on the neck you're playing. I have yet to try playing chords on a bass but I wouldn't be surprised if that minor 7th voicing you were struggling with would be easier to play entirely inverted as in index on G, middle on D, and ring on E.

I've been looking at the bass for a while and watched several reviews. I managed to snag #1 of the 5 Gold 10th Anniversary Editions 4 string. Having played it for several months, every time I pick up my 1960 Fender Jazz it feels so "old school". The neck shaping, body shape & weight make SUCH a huge difference to the feel and playability. Not played it at a gig yet, so no idea about audience reaction..... May need to wait a while as on lock down

I couldn't tell from the video but I wondered whether the strings were clamped at the "head" end, because if they're double ball ended like the Steinbergers, you'd be limited in choice to the manufacturer's range, but if they're clamped, you could use any. That aside, really good and engaging demo, Julia. If you like 'em light, you wouldn't be too keen on my current favourite bass: a Peavey 5 string Grind bass - it's a real neck-bender, weight wise. I might just have to hollow out the back with a router. 😱

I know I’m super late to this conversation but they both sound great. The strandberg I prefer simply due to the neck. It’s unbelievably comfortable and I really think I can’t buy a bass without that neck in my life. The Ibanez is still incredibly light and sounds great of course, but the strandberg is the first time it’s felt genuinely comfortable to play for hours on a bass, with zero stress on my wrist despite previous carpal tunnel issues. That’s worth the price hike for me, even if it isn’t for others. If you get the chance, try that neck shape out, it’s really something else.

It's a synonym for multiscale and it means each string has its own scale length. That's useful because longer strings give you more tension which is great for low strings, and shorter on the high strings where you don't want as much tension/length because they'll sound 'brittle'.

I totally dig the design aesthetic of Stranberg's guitars and basses. That so many other builders default to variations on the Fender design for their products show a lack of innovation and confidence. Does the fanned fret provide tonal string balance on the 5 string model? Many basses are thin on the G string, and lack articulation on the B string. Its hard to tell on this video, so I would like to hear how someone who has played this instrument (preferably in the context of a band) perceives this instrument's tonal balance.

@@raymondrak961 It seems that most builders defer to relying on the safety of proven Fender/Gibson designs , rather than have the confidence to market new innovations. The pointy bit at the bottom of the body actually makes it difficult to play sitting down. Note how she keeps changing position. Having it resting on the left leg is not comfortable for long and twists your back. It’s nothing like a classical guitar position actually. Because -you need a left foot raised position rest. If they removed the point then this guitar will play much more comfortably for long periods sitting or standing hanging on a strap. It’s the best way to avoid back pain.
