Just coming across this video capt I am the mate on this boat we really appreciate your help more than you know. This happened on our delivery from Wilmington North Carolina to Orange Beach,AL. One lesson we learned is that we will never go anywhere near that pass for the rest of our lives 😂😂😂
@CaptKenO7 ай бұрын
Hahaha. Yeah. That pass definitely isn't made for boats that size!

The local PD is watching and learning from a good captain
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
Haha. Maybe... 🤔 The PD here actually does some recovery work, but they don't have the boats/equipment setup to do anything like this. They mostly deal with abandoned sunk boats and the occasional car that ends up in the water

About the start where he takes care of you up front; that's just good sense & although I've never owned anything like this vessel I've had times in cars where I needed help, some discretion & a fair shake on the money side. That said, always offer some bit of good will to a salvage man who's come out to help You out of Your problem! I'm not a man of means but I'd always give some token of my appreciation in whatever the matter was. It just works out better for all involved. I learned this one night after I had an accident while drinking..... I took care of him & later when the Cops got wind & saw my parked vehicle they knew I was beyond loaded & I told them who towed me out BUT b/c I tipped the Tow People, they said they didn't tow me and the cops could not place me anywhere on the streets drunk = saved me from a DUI. That's what a "Tip" got for me & I didn't ask for help except to tow me off. I never knew about the Cops trying to get proof of where I wrecked until later but they said I never called them! That's how it can help to tip these hard working guys, even if you do not have much money. I gave $50-$60 bucks in the 90's. Never underestimate how a small tip can help You ?

Depends on what you define as dull. I've had some really boring ass tows...not that that's a bad thing though since exciting probably means something went wrong 😬😂 Generally though, I enjoy being out on the water, especially this time of year, so even if the job is boring, I'm still happy to be out there!

What’s the story with New Pass? So many boats run aground there. Is it not marked correctly?
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
I avoid it if at all possible. It's technically a closed pass meaning there are no markers and it isn't dredged. Last time I ran out there was at high tide and I only saw 3.5ft at the deepest...so if you've got a center console, know where to go, go at high tide on a calm day, and full send it, you will probably be OK...but no guarantees 🤣
@AdventuresofHappyOurs Жыл бұрын
@@CaptKenO thank you! I’ve read comments on Navionics about its navigability but was always skeptical. I’ll avoid it with my 35’ inboard!

The little tow boat that could. 😆 Another nice rescue. Was the guy firing off his bow thruster? Saw a wake of his SB bow. Would he just be sucking sand through it and possibly be destroying the mechanicals? 🤷♂️ And dragging his screws through the sand bar. 🤦♂️ Guessing everyone needs a good mechanic once over to assess damage.
@CaptKenO8 ай бұрын
Lol 😂 This is actually the biggest boat we have in the fleet! Yes. He was using his thruster a bit to help...I wouldn't have if it was my boat since that's what was in the mud 🤷
@paulkersey2179 Жыл бұрын
I notice in many of your videos you kick up lots sand and mud, do you have to change the water pump impellers more often than the usual 100 hrs?
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
We do it every 100hrs plus or minus a bit along with an oil change. The engines definitely start running a bit warmer at cruise as we get closer to the 100hrs but not significantly warmer (about 145-150 vs 138). The telltale definitely gets clogged though, but that's easy enough to clear out with a metal coat hanger when flushing the engines
@johnsmart3587 Жыл бұрын
If they are stuck, why have the anchor out? Thanks for video.
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
Hey John. That is a great question, and to be honest, I'm not 100% sure in this situation. Usually it would be because their engine quit, they throw out the anchor to keep from running aground but drift on to the sandbar anyway...but in this case, they ran onto the sandbar first. My best guess is they hit the sandbar and deployed the anchor to try and keep themselves from drifting further onto the sandbar, but I don't know for sure
@davemaier2563 Жыл бұрын
Would an Off-Road elastic recovery rope work to bounce the boat loose from the sandbar? Instead of having to dead pull it.
@CaptKenO Жыл бұрын
I've thought about it... But they don't float, so all the elastic benefit is wasted trying or pull it back up though the water 😕 Besides that, I don't know how well it would hold up in salt water
@markthomas9196 ай бұрын
Maybe not when you consider the inertia of a big one like that vs pulling power of towboat engines, an over elastic line would probably waste some of the power. Think on water you're better with constant tension plus intelligent pull directions to break any bottom suction. Mind you I haven't towed any stuck boats for 40 years. Back then we were always having to pull out renters from mudbanks or didn't realise tide would go out! We gave up renting in the end as hassle wasn't worth the income.....

Sometimes I think one day I could afford a 45-55’ sport fisher. Then I remember buying it and maintaining and fuel cost are two different animals 😂
@CaptKenO7 ай бұрын
Hahaha! You're not kidding 😂 People ask me all the time if the big boats that are around ever leave...and my reply is usually something along the lines of "not really. The people that own the boat never have time to take it out because they're too busy working to pay for the maintenance and slips fees. Plus, they'll burn more fuel just leaving the marina than we did on this entire charter."
@jakejacobson29997 ай бұрын
