I've been listening to Tony Seba for years. HE is the one that kept me in Tesla during the tough times. We know in the end we win. You can see his predictions as early as 2010. He predicted that solar would win. He predicted that EVs would win. Watch his videos. These youtubers didn't hear about him. Tony made predictions that sounded crazy, where actually they were often conservative. After listening to his predictions, I always have the feeling that I've been here before. Check Tony's work. So happy to see Tony getting respect. Check his predictions on the cattle industry. Technology is going to create many things cheaper. We are going from the age of extraction to the age of creation. The 2020's are going to have HUGE disruptions. Buckle you seat belt. Near 2025 ALL new cars/trucks/buses will be electric.

I work at the largest coal fired power station in Australia and the solar / renewable penetration in the middle of the day makes coal fired stations wind down to minimum load and basically become unprofitable - our company is heavily looking into grid scale battery storage and green hydrogen long term as there is large demand building from Japan and Korea plus we can produce the hydrogen with cheap solar and hydro renewable energy to make it cost effective. Works ok in Australia because we have lots of cheap solar - some of the cheapest in the world and countries that cannot create their own energy want to import cheap easily transportable green fuel like hydrogen or ammonia to convert. I want Australia to invest in green technology more but our government is dragging its heels which is worrying because a lot of skilled people will be out of a job when fossil plants close maybe including myself - I’m all for renewables and want to work in the industry but the government needs to provide clear direction. I’m trying to diversify my income streams with investing and side hustles like KZbin so in the worst case scenario I don’t lose 100% of my income 🙂

I've read several case articles articles recently about old power plants being converted to solar farms and electricity storage facilities because they are already tied to the grid and have usually a lot of real estate to work with. You would think that such ideas would come with a lot of favorable opinion from the local populations who would rather not see the jobs and tax revenue completely lost. Maybe this is what your company is thinking of doing

Just a fact update on the Hornsdale Power station, South Australia is small state less than 2 Million people and after closing down their last coal fired power stations they had a massive power failure which caused the state government a lot of grief and embarrassment. They are still maintaining their base load via a big extension cord from their neighboring state (mine). That being said the battery helps balances out the grid and has done so very effectively and has been an economic success with several other Australian states planning installs over the next 12 months. Ive been following Ambri and Donald for several years and its great to see they have completed a commercial install. I hope word gets out quick on the advantages and cost effectiveness of the Ambri batteries as I believe its a much better solution/option than than Lithium Ion (still luv Tesla but)

What are the efficiencies of these different battery technologies (compared to each other)? The compressed air sounds good, but then again so does hydrogen until you look at the efficiency. I don't know the answer, honestly asking
@kazedcat
@kazedcat 3 жыл бұрын
The efficiency does not really matter. According to Tony Seba to get to 100% renewable we need 4X renewable generation capacity against annual demand to provide electricity all year round. There will be a lot of marginal cost electricity produce over demand that can be allocated for storage. What matters is the capital cost of energy storage as long as the capital cost is very low you can match them with renewable generation to provide highly valuable on demand power.

I saw Prof sadoway talking about one weakness about his battery. Yeah he is incredibly honest. He said they have yet to find out a suitable material for the container to hold the liquid metal. They use a typemof ceramic right now, but those don't have the long life of the actual battery chemistry and as a result the battery as a whole has reduced life. I too think deploying lithium ion for large scale grid storage is a waste of resource. Lithium ion should be in EVs or other applications where energy density matters.Liquid air is the most promising I had found when I first came across it. It's especially scalable because it uses existing refinery parts.

The one question I can't get an answer to is if battery storage can handle rapid current, voltage and frequency changes and act the same as a spinning reserve. A flywheel like a spinning generator instantly responds but will inverters. I think we will, at least for the near future, need a spinning reserve.
@danmoyer4650

Batteries are controlled by computers and micro-electronics. The slowest of those systems respond in milliseconds. The better ones in microseconds. A "spinning generator" can respond in seconds at best, but more probably minutes.
@briancunningham483

@@danmoyer4650 actually a spinning generator has a fly wheel effect and responds instantly to ride through momentary dips and surges that occur in milliseconds. Electronics have trouble responding. Flywheels are often used in data centers to provide instant backup to power loss since UPS systems take milliseconds at gest to come on line or or up.

3:30 Calcium Chloride is road salt? Where? Around here the cheap stuff, sodium chloride is spread by salt trucks. I think the paw-friendly snowmelt salt from the store is calcium chloride. Sure it's cheap abundant material as far as battery manufacturing is concerned but please be accurate. 9:55 "doesn't degrade as you charge and discharge" If you're chilling the air then compressing it I assume there's mechanical refrigeration involved and also an air compressor of some sort. Mechanical equipment degrades. 13:43 stealthy little play on words there.

One problem is people (at least around me) do not want solar farms around them. A few have been built and now there are signs everywhere and advertising against solar farms. I asked some of the people why it's such an issue and what's the downside. Some of the installations make a loud buzzing sound all day, and they don't want to look at them, they paid to be in the country to have country views. People who live next to solar farms have seen their property values drop dramatically and they have been unable to sell their houses. I asked them if they would rather have a coal plant next to them, which of course they don't. I asked what if the solar installs lowered their electric bills, they said they would rather pay more and not have the solar next to them. They don't mind solar, they just don't want it near them.

Do you think natural gas will be around for much longer than coal/petrol/oil? We prefer gas cooking/heating and all restaurants use gas for their cooking. Interesting conundrum. I’m all for no more coal/petrol/oil etc.

It'll probably become more of a niche thing, for restaurants and legacy heating equipment. Heat pumps can heat homes better than gas: and for home cooking, induction cooks better than gas with all of the fine temperature control. Gas hookups won't be needed for new housing developments.

Agreed. I have just shared this video with over 1500+ people. Let’s get the word out. Can you make an in-depth video about HOW specifically renewable energy is cheaper than fossil fuels? Also, what’s the lowest cost way to go off grid for a 100amp electric box (in Canada - Ontario)?

Car to Grid is the Future. VW plans to do that in the future. I think Tesla doesn't do that, because then who would still buy a Powerwall?

People who'd like to charge their car from the Powerwall maybe? They two are not mutually exclusive.

It shouldn't have taken Tesla creating the Hornsdale utility to get this moving but now it is it makes more sense to use alternative batteries for grid storage so the lithium ion can be used in cars where it's needed.

Really informative. I can see repurposed end of life EV batteries contributing massively to grid storage in the future, 10-20 years or so.

Time to put the battery fire scare to bed. Almost certainly cells we would use for grid storage would be lithium iron phosphate (LFP). Those cells are non flammable. They will not burn. The chemistries that are flammable are likely to be used in high performance and very long range vehicles where as much energy as possible needs to be stored within the space/weight limits. Tesla is now moving their standard range vehicles to LFP cells.

The real problem that we have to face is bribes. Until bribery is interrupted this will continue. Officials being bribed are often getting to the ends of their careers or have major losses in their lives & now these bribes are welcomed. An interruption into the access to bribe is really needed.

The cycle efficiency of liquid batteries should be very good. It depends to quite an extent on the efficiency of the insulation and we have aerogel as a possibility. But what about liquid air. Refrigerators, especially ones that go to very low temperatures eat up power and then you need really good insulation of pretty large tanks to stop heat seeping into the liquid air. Then to get the biggest bang out of the process, you have to put heat into the air when generating.
