I've been listening to Tony Seba for years. HE is the one that kept me in Tesla during the tough times. We know in the end we win. You can see his predictions as early as 2010. He predicted that solar would win. He predicted that EVs would win. Watch his videos. These youtubers didn't hear about him. Tony made predictions that sounded crazy, where actually they were often conservative. After listening to his predictions, I always have the feeling that I've been here before. Check Tony's work. So happy to see Tony getting respect. Check his predictions on the cattle industry. Technology is going to create many things cheaper. We are going from the age of extraction to the age of creation. The 2020's are going to have HUGE disruptions. Buckle you seat belt. Near 2025 ALL new cars/trucks/buses will be electric.

I work at the largest coal fired power station in Australia and the solar / renewable penetration in the middle of the day makes coal fired stations wind down to minimum load and basically become unprofitable - our company is heavily looking into grid scale battery storage and green hydrogen long term as there is large demand building from Japan and Korea plus we can produce the hydrogen with cheap solar and hydro renewable energy to make it cost effective. Works ok in Australia because we have lots of cheap solar - some of the cheapest in the world and countries that cannot create their own energy want to import cheap easily transportable green fuel like hydrogen or ammonia to convert. I want Australia to invest in green technology more but our government is dragging its heels which is worrying because a lot of skilled people will be out of a job when fossil plants close maybe including myself - I’m all for renewables and want to work in the industry but the government needs to provide clear direction. I’m trying to diversify my income streams with investing and side hustles like KZbin so in the worst case scenario I don’t lose 100% of my income 🙂

That being said the battery helps balances out the grid and has done so very effectively and has been an economic success with several other Australian states planning installs over the next 12 months. @kazedcat3 жыл бұрын
The efficiency does not really matter. According to Tony Seba to get to 100% renewable we need 4X renewable generation capacity against annual demand to provide electricity all year round. There will be a lot of marginal cost electricity produce over demand that can be allocated for storage. What matters is the capital cost of energy storage as long as the capital cost is very low you can match them with renewable generation to provide highly valuable on demand power.
@Amuzic_Earth3 жыл бұрын
I saw Prof sadoway talking about one weakness about his battery. Yeah he is incredibly honest. He said they have yet to find out a suitable material for the container to hold the liquid metal. They use a typemof ceramic right now, but those don't have the long life of the actual battery chemistry and as a result the battery as a whole has reduced life. I too think deploying lithium ion for large scale grid storage is a waste of resource. Lithium ion should be in EVs or other applications where energy density matters.Liquid air is the most promising I had found when I first came across it. It's especially scalable because it uses existing refinery parts.

The one question I can't get an answer to is if battery storage can handle rapid current, voltage and frequency changes and act the same as a spinning reserve. A flywheel like a spinning generator instantly responds but will inverters. I think we will, at least for the near future, need a spinning reserve.
@danmoyer46503 жыл бұрын
Batteries are controlled by computers and micro-electronics. The slowest of those systems respond in milliseconds. The better ones in microseconds. A "spinning generator" can respond in seconds at best, but more probably minutes.
@briancunningham4833 жыл бұрын
@@danmoyer4650 actually a spinning generator has a fly wheel effect and responds instantly to ride through momentary dips and surges that occur in milliseconds. Electronics have trouble responding. Batteried take a certain amount of time to produce higher currents due to chemical actions. Flywheels are often used in data centers to provide instant backup to power loss since UPS systems take milliseconds at gest to come on line or or up.

I asked some of the people why it's such an issue and what's the downside. Some of the installations make a loud buzzing sound all day, and they don't want to look at them, they paid to be in the country to have country views. People who live next to solar farms have seen their property values drop dramatically and they have been unable to sell their houses. I asked them if they would rather have a coal plant next to them, which of course they don't. I asked what if the solar installs lowered their electric bills, they said they would rather pay more and not have the solar next to them. They don't mind solar, they just don't want it near them.

The cycle efficiency of liquid batteries should be very good. It depends to quite an extent on the efficiency of the insulation and we have aerogel as a possibility. But what about liquid air. Refrigerators, especially ones that go to very low temperatures eat up power and then you need really good insulation of pretty large tanks to stop heat seeping into the liquid air. Then to get the biggest bang out of the process, you have to put heat into the air when generating.
