We decided to drive to the Arctic Ocean and promptly breakdown and get stranded!
After months in Mexico and the Southern states, we headed North, back to Canada and visit friends and family and attend a few weddings and such. Then on a bit of a whim, we head for the Arctic Ocean!!!
Another 4000km from our hometown, through Alberta, British Columbia the Yukon and into the North West Territories of Canada, ending up at the Arctic Ocean.
Fuel Pump Saga: We had the original fuel pump die the day we bought the chassis, took it to a shop and they diagnosed it and replaced the pump with a NAPA jobber pump. About a year later we sent the truck to get the 7.3 rebuilt and strengthened, while there, that pump died again. Replaced under warranty.
Then after the Crane was removed, and we started building the camper on the back, I replaced the stock steel tank with a Plastic tank and removed the strainers that are in the tank and fitted two large semi style fuel filters on the frame rail (shown here • F-550 Diesel Fuel Filt... ) The strainers were completely filled with grass and straw, which likely caused the first two pumps to fail.
Then about a year after the truck was our Camper, that second pump failed as we were driving past the NAPA store (crazy luck) and I rolled into the parking lot and changed it there... I assumed it was weakened due to having run with the straw in the tank strainers for a time...
Sick of replacing the NAPA pumps, I bought a Bosch pump and kept it in the truck as our spare. This would have been the 4th pump installed, but it turned out that the pump was not at fault this time and there is something else plugging up my fuel line somewhere...

Judging by the colour of the fuel in the ziploc at the beginning of the video i would also say clogged pickup strainer. Tho can’t beat what I once found as fuel starvation problem while I was still working at the dealer. An old 94 Topkick came in for intermittent stalling and unable to restart for a few hours. We check everything but I mean everything and after sending the client back home with the truck starting back normally after each time! I think he must of came back 4-5 times on the tow truck before we figured it out. It went to the point we knew these CAT 3126 had of cam sensor problem we took of the front cover to make sure the cam gears weren’t broken or shifting out of range. After I dunno how many time we took the fuel tank off the last time we did, we found IT! The most random shit ever... the client used fuel conditioner as a lot of them do here for the Kanuckistan winters but at one point he must of added it wrong and the little piece of foil that seals the top of the top of the bottle fell in the thank. And unfortunately at random interval it would get suck up by the pickup, clogged it and stall the truck. To at which point the suction would bleed off then after a while the piece would fall back and float away and the truck could restart normally until next time!....What a mess!!!.....

Stopped at Watson Lake and admired the license plate/sign park, took some pictures then continued onward. One thing I enjoyed seeing were unusual RV rigs and whenever possible and with the permission of the owners, I would photograph them. Our rig was a small 18' teardrop with a large flamingo wrap down the passenger side. Our trip was 16k miles and three months and it was the best time of our lives.

Some type of contamination (paper, plastic, etc.) in your fuel tank is blocking flow. Then when power is off, it falls off strainer. Other is in fuel filter could be something clogging it and then releasing after fuel pump is shut off. Traveled to Alaska in past and noticed little bit of contaminants in gasoline. Always had a spare couple filters and way to access fuel tank to clean it if required.

I think the only thing you can do is start at one end & check the strainer in the tank, make sure the tank is being vented properly, and then pull each line & check them for obstructions. Then do the same for your filters, the fuel pressure regulator, or basically every component up to the fuel rail. Another thing is that most newer vehicles have pumps mounted inside the fuel tank because the fuel keeps the high pressure pumps cool. I went through 3 pumps on my Suburban until I figured out that I was driving too often with less than a quarter tank of gas. I stopped that habit & haven't had a pump fail in 5 years so far. Assuming that your rig is a diesel there's a chance that years of using funky fuel & additives could have caused a build-up of gunk in the lines & it's causing the pump to work too hard. And everyone knows that a restricted line won't allow enough volume to flow through it.

Seems like tank debris. Pump on line pressure is up and the debris sucks to and blocks the inlet. Engine dies pump off and the debris falls away from the inlet. Test the fuel pump relay also. I read someone suggested you get a dirt bike. I would suggest a mountain bike. More reliable and can be made surprising compact for storage if your not going to ride it regularly. Of course it will take time to assemble but hey you can make it down the road.....
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 4 жыл бұрын
Debris in the pickup tube was likely at fault, we blew compressed air backwards from the pump until it bubbled in the tank and then we got going again. We probably couldn't have used a mountain bike or even a dirt bike in this case, it was a 100 kilometers to the next village, and experienced motorcyclists were leaving their bikes and hitchhiking to town, the roads were in pretty rough shape at that time.

Are the fuel pumps that keep failing before or after your dual filter system? I know those fuel pumps can be pretty picky with bad/water in the fuel and only like to "push" fuel, they're crappy at sucking fuel through filters. Could also be an air leak in one of your fuel lines between the pump and the tank? Also, something blocking your fuel pick up in your tank where it falls away when there's no suction. Anyways, hope it didn't take you long to get it fixed and back on the road.

You know what you can do ? First use black electric tape pull tight over the thread. Don't have? Use a plastick bag 1\2 " pull tight till it mold to the thread around to build it up. And done so it work with the clock wise tightening . work all the time .

I see many old van . rv. Afraid to tell them fuel pump goes out at the 110-200 mikes mark . and it cost a lot to drop the tank. The easy way is to cut the floor a small hole flap . but ford still need a special ac tool to take off the metal connector . water pump. Fuel pump. Alternater starter. All need to be change

Everlanders, I have a question about the fuel pump you are using. Is it the stock pump for the 7.3 or is it a higher capacity pump and what pressures are you reading for fuel pressure. My question is based on my stock pump not supplying sufficient pressure for the required minimum pressures that the injector pump requires, need 9 getting max 6.5psi even though it is a 'good' pump. I also have a different diesel engine then you do but I am still interested in the pressure delivered by your pump. I have found fuel lift kits but I am wanting to stay at a lower cost point than the $400US they are asking for. The only extra benefit I see in the lift kits I have found is the max pressures can be adjusted on the pump. If I have too much pressure I can purchase a fuel pressure regulator and set that device for what I need. Thanks in advance for any info you give. Wayne
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 4 жыл бұрын
It's a stock style pump, the pressure is controlled by a regulator spring at the fuel bowl, I show this spring near the end of this video. I currently have a 65psi spring in there...

How is the voltage going to the pump? Could it be a bad ground? Or the voltage is not strong enough to fully power the pump.

Almost sounds like the Hi pressure pump (fed by the low pressure pump you replaced) has "come un-assed"...They start to wear internally and all the metal from that wear now gets into the lines and injectors....REALLY hope I'm wrong!

Can't wait till you do a full ev conversion and plus up your solar by a few kw to charge while camping:) see 'ev west' or 'icon ev' for examples
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 4 жыл бұрын
I've done enough conversions to know it's not viable at this time, We are making about 3-4 kWh per day from our existing solar. A Tesla Sedan has 100kW battery... that would take 33 days to charge from our existing solar. Even if we somehow doubled our solar as you mentioned in other comments "2 forward and two backward!" it would still take 15 days to recharge assuming we used none of the power for anything else. The second reason this isn't viable is the batteries, a 100kWh of batteries gets a 4900lb Tesla 480km (300 miles) But we weigh 14,000 lbs, nearly 3 times as much (before the added weight of a massive battery bank.) And our efficiencies wouldn't be anywhere near what a properly engineered EV can get. So our range would be 80 to 100 miles... Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it - I would love if it was realistic - it's not.

@@Everlanders I haven't seen a full electric overland setup yet. I think it's just a matter of figuring out how it can be done. Although charging with solar would be awesome I was thinking you could outfit your rig with a dc fast charging input and use the solar as a range extender. I wonder who will be the first? Well, that sucks to be stranded in the middle of your journey. At least the views are beautiful. I would think that the fuel pressure regulator might be to blame. If not then, are you only losing pressure or you losing fuel as well? Possibly a faulty pipe that is leaking pressure? Also, fuel requires air to burn, perhaps it is not the fuel pressure or regulator but it is the air intake which is not supplying proper air and stalling the engine? You should also check for the dirty fuel filter, weak pump, incorrect tank venting, restricted fuel lines, a clogged pump inlet strainer and faulty electrical control. Sometimes fuel pumps pressure loss is caused by corrosions in the fuel pump. Is the correct voltage being delivered to the pump at all times? I think it is the pressure regulator. But I could be wrong. I hope you get to fix the problem and continue on your journey.
