That man is obviously HeavyDSparks. He has a youtube channel that is amazing and he has a lot of powerful equipment that he uses for rescues and recoveries, all the way from Salt Lake UT. Dave Sparks reached out on this video for contact info and then posted a video of himself and crew, on his very powerful Navy boat, on Lake Mead, so if you go to his channel, you can see that clip and soon he will post a full video of the recovery. He is an amazing man, who will not charge this boat owner, saving him $20K!

He first dug a trench to let boat sit level, then dug a trench from his boat to the water. It was slow going, but he got it. Big day when his boat went sailing back to marina. Folks helped by loaning a boat to get back and forth to marina and folks helped dig as able. By hand. It was cool to see. Well if they could figure out how to reroute the water after the turbines back to the Lake it won’t make it gain water level but it will put the water back in the lake and slow the loss down some I’d think then shut down the carwashes watering yards and no essential water activity or maybe they could build like some sort of temporary intake that goes deeper down idk just some ideas that popped in my pea brain

Excellent on going reports from a fantastic representation of a father and son doing the outdoors ! You two have created an absolutely epic KZbin channel! I watched your first elk hunt just last week and was very appreciative of your being so humble about your entire elk hunt experience and the hard lessons that you were able to retain yet at the same time " shake it off" and learn from it. To me, anytime one is able to experience, the great outdoors,( especially Elk hunting), [my favorite past time, lifetime memories made] with family and friends is super special ! Its so refreshing to see you two out enjoying each other's company, all the while hunting, fishing, boating, camping, hiking, shooting... its great ! Love the channel. Love even more the message you put out, that if you're able to help your fellow man, do it, as it truly warms the heart to give, to pay it forward. Just the mere suggestion of h- elping that guy out, stuck in the sand bar to your audience says volumes about your own integrity and moral fabric! You dudes are giants amongst men ! I truly mean it ! Lastly to your Dad, what an amazing job you've successfully reared a fine young man, in your son. By the way, I thought for sure you were and are the new he- stud of the lake with that Ruffles chip/ bass sandwich, I really thought for sure you would eat it ! *At the end when the dam is shown. Small correction: the towers are ventilation ports, not intakes. Water induction is separate. For anyone interested in the design of the powerhouses, penstocks, induction tubes and tailraces, the information is available. The effect however, is CORRECT; when the water level drops too low, there is insufficient “head” or drop and runner disks inside the scroll cases will not turn properly under load.*

Has the electricity generation been halted?
@joeskeptical47622 жыл бұрын
@@erinmason8664 *: No, not yet. I suspect power output will not be stopped completely, just reduced to run smaller turbines (the powerplant has eight of different sizes, if memory serves correctly) through which water flow is necessary anyway to maintain the river course downstream. If the water flowing downstream becomes too little (depends on the river) the river bed and banks can be changed for the worse, and the ecosystem in the river’s vicinity can be affected badly. If a fire or explosion in the powerhouse or at the substation caused the hydro turbines to be shut down, water would still be sent downstream. I suspect at a certain point, inflows upstream where Lake Mead begins, will be divided, half going to power generation, half water supply. This would maintain the lake until precipitation in the headwaters, in the State of Colorado, increases.*
@mikefranklin702 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. The four towers are in fact intake towers. Each one goes into a 30ft penstock pipe. And they are NOT out of water! As of today 6 generators were on in the Nevada side. We have more than 100ft+ more to go before that happens.
@joeskeptical47622 жыл бұрын
@@mikefranklin70 *: The towers visible above water are VENTILATION. Induction or intake ports are submerged, they cannot be seen from the water surface. The water feeds supply tubes, the penstocks receive supply water and deliver it into and are adjacent to the scroll case in a vertical shaft hydro turbine, such as in the Boulder Dam, renamed Hoover. I did not say water flow was already insufficient.*
@mikefranklin702 жыл бұрын
@@joeskeptical4762 Your splitting hairs. You need ventilation to have the water go smoothly into the penstocks. But those are INTAKE towers. There job is to take in water. Having vents is part of the process. Just like having gates to control the flow is part of the process. The penstocks start at the intake towers. Flow from the 30ft pipes into the 13ft penstocks. Which finally at the end go through the scroll case into the turbine. If you trying to say the scroll case (honestly not sure what you are trying to say) is next to the intake towers, you are wrong. Yes you didnt say the water wasnt going into the system. But the youtuber did. Plus, look at a picture of the lake in 1983. Those things that look like vents to you are completely submerged. The Hoover Dam was built with water fluctuations in mind. The towers are designed to be able to take in water through almost thier entire hieght.
@andysmith68242 жыл бұрын
Regarding Hoover Dam, I took the “Damn Dam” Tour (I love that from the Vegas Vacation movie!) and if I recall correctly, those intake towers are not the turbines that generate electricity. Those are simply the water intake valves which are HUGE. There is one area deep inside the dam where you can see through a window and they have spotlight on it, but it shows how wide those intakes actually are. They said you can drive Greyhound buses through those intakes and pipes and they would fit with a little room to spare. When you see them in operation, it’s pretty amazing. The turbines that spin and create electricity (by the water flowing past them and spinning the impellers), those are the things that you see near the beginning of the tour. They look like huge coffee bean roasters, but much, much bigger! I think they are copper if I’m not mistaken, and those are the actual turbines where the electricity comes from. I think there are 6 or 8 of them. And finally, we were told that they are aware of the water’s dangerous level, so a few years ago they drilled underwater and created water intakes that you can’t see because they are way at the bottom underwater. Without those extra intakes they made, I think the dam would be close to useless by now. I have pictures of visiting the Dam and taking the “damn dam” tour, and somewhere around 2002 I think it was, the lake level was normal and everything looked like it should. I had to go back to Vegas 75 different times between 2005 and 2012. I went to the dam about every third trip just to see the water level and to watch the crazy-dangerous construction of the new freeway bypass. It has been shocking to go back each time and see how low the water is. It’s just so shocking each time to see it so much lower. In your videos, it’s the lowest I’ve ever seen it. By the way, that was really interesting about the wind and how big the waves get out on that lake!!!!! I’m still shocked at hearing that and seeing the videos! I never knew that Lake Mead was capable of that! Thanks for your great work. And I hope someone was able to help Craig! We are all human beings and I believe that the vast majority of us are good people. But of course, the bad people are what make the news. Sometimes, it’s hard to remember how good we are when we are force-fed garbage down our throats from the media and from politicians on BOTH SIDES of the aisle.
@rupe532 жыл бұрын
... those coffee roasters at the start of the tour are the generators. The actual turbine is probably 100 feet lower on the end of a long shaft. When the water is low there's lots of air mixed with the water and that's what destroys the turbine impellers.
@andysmith68242 жыл бұрын
@@rupe53 Okay, thanks for the correction. It’s an amazing operation, and looking at the old photos of it being built are very impressive. Unfortunately, I don’t know if a new dam could be built in America today. Everything goes through Environmental Impact Reports, where they will bring gigantic projects to a stop which will make us suffer, but will save a little fly. I’m sure it is argued the importance of that fly or insect or frog or fish or plant, but think about what America would look like today if we operated back then like we do now. We would not have freeways. We would not have indoor plumbing. We would not have air-conditioning, we would not have gasoline, and so on. A small minority of people hold the majority of power, and we have dumbed ourselves down, possibly to death.

Thank you again for providing updates on the water levels at Lake Mead. I grew up with my uncle teaching us to water ski on Lake Mead and we used to fish as well. When you mentioned about high winds, while we had a weather radio to keep track of winds, I have seen Lake Mead with large waves. We got caught in these many times. Once it was so bad, we had to pull into a cove for protection until the wind subsided. It is decreasing so quickly, this is scary. I commented on this back in 2010 when I noticed it. Thank you for helping and posting about the guy stranded with his houseboat. It sounds like there is enough word of mouth that perhaps and hopefully he can get some help. Fishing looks great.
