Stranded on a Mountainside at 4200 Feet: Camping and Riding My Suzuki DRZ400S

The Suzuki DRZ400s is one of the most reliable motorcycles of all time, so imagine my surprise when it suddenly died and wouldn't start again after climbing almost all the way up a mountainside. After messing with it a bit and trying to utilize my limited mechanical abilities to diagnose the problem, I was able to narrow it down to a fuel tank pressure issue and eventually get the bike started and make it back to camp. Before all this, I set out on what I thought was going to be a pretty normal camping and motorcycle riding trip. I road tripped up over the Santiam Pass with stops at Lost Lake and Round Lake along the way, as well as some beautiful views of Three Fingered Jack. Once I arrived at my campsite at Gorge Campground near Camp Sherman, Oregon, I unloaded my Suzuki DRZ 400 and took off towards my destination: the Green Ridge Lookout. I made it 75% of the way up the mountain when I had my dual sport break down and got temporarily stranded at 4200 feet of elevation. It was a sketchy/scary experience for sure, but eventually I made it back to camp for a more relaxing evening by the campfire.

When I was 16 my buddy and I drove a POS 70's dodge up into the mountains and got it stuck as it was 2wd only. We figured we had a 7 hour walk in front of us back to camp. Nothing like that realization sinking in that your screwed and you start walking hoping to be back by about 1am. Three hours into our walk a guy in a Pinto showed up and took us back. Once you're back safe and sound it sure turns into a good story, thanks for sharing!

Also, very important. Open your oil dip stick cap on the frame, put your nose down on it and smell. If it smells like fuel, change your oil and oil filter immediately. In an overflow situation, gas can run into the combustion chamber, and get into your crank case. Gas thins out oil and destroys main bearings. Just an FYI. Good luck.

NOT totally true!!!.......it takes a TON of gas in your oil to burn bearings or seize a piston!....gas evaporates, and you got oil moving Way too fast for the gas to even make a difference for the average leak. Yes you should change your oil, but you're Not instantly going to cook bearings.......you would need like 1 gallon gas in your Oil, or something ridiculous, Lol. I've had Tons of bikes that leaked gas in the oil, like a Quart! And it still rode fine, this is extremely common in old Motorcycles........it's not an instant death sentence, just change it as soon as possible, that's all.

I have a DRZ400 as well. The fuel was coming out of your carburetor overflow hose. It could be that your carburetor float was stuck. Next time try tapping on the side of the carb to dislodge the float. Also, I run ethanol free gas in my bike. I've rebuilt too many carburetors that are gummed up from using normal pump gas with ethanol in it. If you are running normal pump gas, and the bike has sat for awhile, you may might want to clean the carb. It kind of looks like that is what is going on to me. Hope this helps.

The glasses look cool. Once I got lost with my family in the wilderness picking berries. I know the fear that comes with being lost or stranded in the wilderness. If you should go for a walk in the woods, always tell someone where you’re going, AND always go back the same way you came. Trying to go back a different way was how we got lost.

I guess it's not an adventure until something goes wrong. We were visiting my son when he was working out of Hood River. We had heard about Lost Lake and wanted to see it since it was summer and thought it would be cool to see a lake that fills up and then drains. We found Lost Lake but the people at the boat ramp said oh that's a different Lost lake, so we didn't make it. Who knew there were two Lost Lakes. Great video, cant wait to see part II

In case you didn't get back up Green Ridge, just so you know, you wouldn't have been able to ride all the way to the lookout. The road is gated about a 1/4 mile away -- the lookout is rented out during the shoulder season and used as an active lookout in the summer. We rode up there (after visiting Wolf Rock) and opted not to walk to the lookout since it was also 90+ degrees when we were there. You got the best views on the ride up and down!

I think almost all in Oregon are like that now, especially 'close to civilization'. They're either set up for rent, or torn down. Some way out in the boonies are still there, and a couple are still in use (like Black Butte) but the up-close-and-personal fire lookout experience is almost gone in Oregon now.

My guess (without knowing the facts): Since he'd been riding, maybe didn't put the choke back on, and it had cooled off enough to need it? Also, possible that it took so long to start afterwards because the engine and carb were flooded. Best way to clear a flooded condition is to crank it with the throttle wide open.

If I get stranded miles from nowhere with a fuel injected bike I have no idea what to start checking or working on first. And finding a fault is a process of elimination. Whilst checking all these many components I'll be using the battery up testing things. Oh ...No... now I have a flat battery. Guess what ? You can't bump start a fuel injected bike. With a carburettor and a little knowledge I know I will definitely find the problem eventually and fix it. If I flattened the battery, O.K. I can bump start it.

One of the advantages of riding at very simple basic carburetor bike without all the electronics. On the odd chance that your bike breaks down, even someone with very limited mechanical experience can generally sort out the issue and get going. That's why most serious adventure riders the DR650 and KLR 650. Can you imagine if this happened to the BMW or KTM?

DRZs are famous for petcock failure. Mine failed and the float valve also failed. It sat for a week and completed filled my crank case and cylinder with fuel. Complete self imposed hydrolock. Replaced the factory petcock with a pingle. Bike never wanted to idle from new. I finally replaced it with a WR250R. The sound of the DRZ starter was a constant, the engine running, not so much.

I've only watched to 10:09 yet but I have a guess: First off, if you're pissing fuel, you should shut off the fuel petcock from the tank. That will minimize how much you can lose. But, I believe your problem is a clogged or blocked fuel vent line, so when the bike and fuel and air got hot, the tank pressurized. Because the pressure couldn't equalize, it forced fuel down and overpowered the float valve, flooding your carb bowl and causing it to leak out the overflow.

I bet it's flooded because the O ring that goes on the needle valve assembly went bad. When it goes it continously dumps fuel into the motor. It happens especially when using gas wit ethanol. Easy fix just pop the bowl off take off the float and float needle. Unscrew the screw that the needle was in and replace the Oring around it. I always carry spares with me. If you let it set and too much fuel gets in the cylinder then try to start it you could bend valves or damage rings. Check your oil to make sure no fuel is in it before you take her back out.

Technology - the more efficient, advanced and “green” cars and motorcycles become, the more the tiniest little “innovation” can cause a total failure. They were basically more reliable 50 years ago (in as much there was only a couple of things that could go wrong and these could easily be fixed with a couple of simple tools). These days you need a state of the art workshop and enough computer power to get a spaceship to Mars just to diagnose a simple problem (which in my case recently, took 6 hours labour and a virtual engine dismantle to change a $25 sensor).

I know this video is old, but I'm guessing your experienced the motorcycle version of vapor lock. You blocked the tanks breathing capabilities with your bag, and you have a carbureted bike that is likely set for sea level. You are at 4200+ feet. What did you think would happen?

In the two years I’ve owned my DRZ it left me stranded twice. First issue was the same issue dork is having out on the trail. Which just ended up being a stuck float and needle. I was able to free it by tapping on the bowl. The second time the pilot jet ended up getting clogged after winter storage. I have a WR250R now that I’ve owned for almost 4 years now. Never had a single issue with it and I’ve put triple the miles on it compared to the DRZ. I’m never going back to a carb.

Ya because the heat, and traveling on the truck would have created a good amount of vapour. Which should have vended while setting up camp🤔 I've never had a tank try and siphon it's self😆 neat

There should NEVER be pressure, or vacuum in a carbureted system. Its just gravity feed from the tank to the carb bowl, then a float and needle valve that controls the system. Its as basic as basic gets. Throw the tank bag away, that system needs to vent properly. Also take your carb apart and put it back together a few times...understand what is happening there and actually be prepared instead of "I buy lots of gear" and "google" prepared. This guy carries a gun for the one in 10 billion chance his life may depend on it and doesn't know how a carb works. #facepalm

Knowing the basics is good, but not everyone is mechanically inclined. And knowing what you do know... and don't know... is a good thing. He knows he's not mechanically inclined, so he carries means to get help - phone and inreach mini - and as far as him carrying a gun..... better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Oh, and it's his right to carry that tool to protect himself.

@@ericg6306 Nothing wrong with having the firearm...the problem is that I'm sure he spends/spent time researching it, practicing with it etc etc. Dozens if not hundreds of hours. Not wasted time per se, just time seriously overprioritized compared to things that are actually going to cause you harm on the trail. If he was really interested in protecting himself, instead of having the emotional of feeling of protection (i.e. manly gun syndrome), he would have spent 10 of those hours learning how a carb works and understanding the fuel system on his machine. The odds of him needing that gun to protect himself are billions of times less likely than needing to learn something about the bike instead of covering it up with a puny excuse of "I'm not mechanically inclined". Again, nothing wrong with taking a gun its your right...but doing it under the mantra of "protection" is just statistically and logically absurd. Anyone honestly interested in not harming themselves or protecting their family would take a yearly driving course and wear helmets in their car. But doing that isn't nearly as cool as a glock.

Someone does not need to be able to rebuild a carb to be safe on a motorcycle...sheesh. He did learn about a stopped vent line though, so I’m sure he won’t do that again. I’m sure being born with this knowledge, Mike, has helped you throughout life though...feel extra good about that.
