The shot of the snow cat showing it coming forward towards the camera up the trail around a bend was great. What caught my attention was that there were no footprints in the snow for setting up your camera. It's always amazing to realize the effort it takes to capture many of the scenes.

You've learned the first rule of operating a sno-cat: minimum and intermittent steering inputs for whatever radius turn you want or need. If worse comes to worse make three-point turns. If you're lucky the adjustment on that rear idler wheel will be great enough so you can put the track back on without having to split it. If you're not, it'll even be a LOT more work as the lacing appears to be on the bottom side of the track as it sits. It would be a relatively easy job if you had another snow-cat to pull/drag/drive the Imp backwards out of the track, find the lacing, split it and pull/drag the Imp back onto the laid out track. But you don't. You MAY be able to "drive" the cat backwards and out of the track by applying full left hand brake (so the left sproket does not turn) and get the cat to limp backwards out of the track (with people or the snomobile pulling on the track away from the cat.... or on the opposite side pulling on the rear of the cat sideways to it goes backwards sort of straight). Good luck.
@TheOutsiderCabin4 жыл бұрын
Great advice, from an obviously experienced operator. ...Long story short, we had to split the track. 😖😄 ...and yes it was a brutal job, especially without having a second machine to help.
@francoislepine46984 жыл бұрын
@@TheOutsiderCabin GOOD!....yeah, spent 25 winters, with a few breaks in between, grooming ski runs.....never drove a Bombardier Bombi like yours (in my earlier post I mistook it for a Thiokol Imp) but drove other cats with planetary diffs with steering brakes. The sprokets at the front were a distinctive Bombadier feature for a very long time. This lays the track "loose" on the snow ahead of the first tire...a feature that enhances traction considerably compared to the now universal rear sproket lay-out. The downside is it's easier to throw a track. If you do have to make a really sharp turn it's best to make SEVERAL small changes of direction...releasing the tension on the track between a few different brake applications. Long, gradual turns aren't a problem though. Nice job restoring that Bombi I must say. I'm jealous! Regards, F

Luckily, I am not used to it anymore. I absolutely love your videos! Keep on working at it, you'll be done before you know it. Well, gotta run, be safe, stay well. @@stephanelachance6195 Yes the world of tracked driving is an interesting one. I drive, maintain, repair old military vehicles for a museum. Great fun. However the maintenance can be challenging. One tip I would give, pay particular attention to the recommended maintenance. With modern cars they can be relatively forgiving on some degree of neglected or delayed maintenance. Tracked vehicles and plant really appreciate the greasing and maintenance that is recommended. For some tracks it is strongly recommended that certain parts are greased EVERY time the vehicle has been through water. I am not certain where snow would count in this greasing recommendation. I will follow the progress of the snow cat with interest. Especially the job of replacing the track. I hope the Outsider has the recommended special tools if any are required for this machine. Most of my experience of replacing tracks has involved, splitting the track, winding it on, clamping it back up, and rebooting. It will be interesting to see how it works out on this machine.😀🇬🇧

@@filmbluff99 Your work at the museum really hit a sensible cord for me. My love for tracked vehicules dates a long time ago when I was around 8 years old. My uncle had a bombardier j5 ( the ones with the round top) that he used to collect maple water. Being to young to carry the heavy pails, my cousins and I would ly on the j5 top for a whole afternoon and I was hypnotized by looking at theses unstopable tracks turn through snow, mud and water. Even today at 52 years old, I can still remember the sound of the gasoline engine and the smell of the exhaust. And of course...I never heard my uncle swear...except when he threw off a track in a big mud hole. Priceless memories ! You are doing a fantastic job, - everyone can do a mistake and learn from it too! Perhaps you can work on something else; work from the inside of the cabin ie. have the stove going, and stuff all seams in the out walls with hemp or suitable material, then you have excluded the draft and can be in relative comfort. you can fit the windows from inside provided the openings are covered with plastic foil. The gable triangles can be covered in robust WPB plywood from outside and there is space for 2 square windows standing on a corner (ie 45 degr. offset) and a rustic cladding of western red cedar shakes on the outside, - it looks very good. - just a thought. With my experience as a Abrams Driver (Now gunner), tracked vehicle maintenance is imperative. If your tension is loose, and you make too tight of turns, especially in sand, dirt etc, you WILL throw track. If it can happen to a snow cat, it will happen to a M1a2. Material like that will physically push against the track, as well as stack up, pushing the roadwheels up and over the center guides, walking it off the center guides, and off the sprocket. I've seen sprockets pop off from that as well. Welcome to life as a tanker.

In the Marines, I was a Tanker. If you turned the Tank like you did with your snow cat, you could throw a track. So. As not to do that, you would turn, let up and go straight a foot or two, turn, let up, turn, let up some, and head straight onto your intended direction. It just hit me! If you have the opportunity to buy a, "Hook and Pintle" hitch setup. That would be a better towing setup for, off the road towing.

When you posted your first video of your Bombi, I warned you about keeping the right tension on the tracks. Jack up that side, remove all the snow. take out your grease fitting that tightens the track. using a comealong, pull your idler back as far as you can. flip the track back on. replace the grease fitting, and pump it back up with a greasegun. If you have run out of adjustment, you will have to split the lacing and remove one cleat and shorten. Also, as a sidenote, steering clutches are another weak point with the bombi. If you haven’t reconditioned them, it’s worth a look when the weather warms up. I always thought the little 4 cylinder ford engine with a four speed manual was the best part of the machine....don’t know why you would want to replace it?

Wrenches to tighten up track and on your way. And I do know that if you look around you can find rubber tracks for it to run summer time . And now with this workhorse you can put your skills to work and build a sleigh for it instead of using the trailer.
