There are too many Citrus diseases in FL today, but historically (when they could be kept alive) limequat were used as a (frost) hardier substitute for key limes: pies, marmalades, marinades, limeades, but never fresh--as you now know ;-).

Ever since the Wegamn's by my parent's house started carrying kumquats, I've been obsessed with them. I love the burst of juicy, sour part and the subtle sweetness of the rind. So good!

Hello, I have eaten today a Limequat tavares and it has a nicely aromatic non bitter rind and flesh. After using the juice, I coated the rind with sugar, and it's delicious. It is believed that this limequat is actually a lemon x kumquat hybrid, which makes sense to me because I think it tastes like lemon, unlike my limequat eustis, but with a kumquaty touch to it.

Love your series. We were down in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico in July and the fruit vendors were selling nance. They look like yellow cherries with white flesh, but they taste nothing like cherries. I recommend it.

I was down there last month and tried it. Such a strange taste, almost cheesy.
@deanschmidt10957 жыл бұрын
Yes and kind of a texture like soft wax. What month did you go to Colombia? That market looks like a bonanza.
@anthonydatri70697 жыл бұрын
Mandarinquats have been available in Portland markets for the last month or so. Jared captures their tartness well. I bought a net bag of them and end up composting them because I couldn't get anyone to take them for free. That said, thin slices including the rind can be used in salads or in drinks.

I normally just eat the skin from quats unless it is the Japanese variety of kumquat with the sweet flesh.

one of the great contiments imo is indian lime pickle ... hot, salty, sour & fragrant. even if you don't eat it, just sitting on the side of a curry it exerts a presence that gives everything a lift. this might be the best use of a limequat. question: if you soak a citrus in water long enough, does the citric acid eventually leach out?
@AaronSpielman7 жыл бұрын
I'd probably dig the limequat )without the rind), given that limes, kumquats, and white grapefruit are my faves.

I think these are limequat Lakeland. Never had one, but from your description it seem the worst of the 3 limequat varieties I told you in the other video(eustis,tavares and lakeland). See if you can find an Eustis, you'll love it, it doesn't have any soapy taste and the peel taste good. That was also either overripe or the plant wasn't properly fertilized, that's why it was a little dry.
@Whfox7 жыл бұрын
Christian Brandoni I had both Eustis and Tavares. Eustis is smaller, rounder, pale yellow, and tastes more like a lime with a sweet peel. Tavares fruits are bigger and look more like a small lemons, I like how they look in the plant. When completely ripe the peel is deep yellow, sweet, but with not too much flavor, and the inside tastes like a mix of kumquat and lemon. I've never seen a Lakeland limequat in person.
@Chris-z6f6k7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I also recently got the Tavares and although it's nice and productive it has very little taste. I was hoping it would improve with age or that I didn't get them at the correct ripeness, but it seem they are like that then. Not very useful imho.

Honestly watching you first only eat the flesh had me thinking "No no that's not how you do it!" - I grow limequats, love em - They're not as sour as yours in the video though. I can stand eating mine, although of course not as easily as a kumquat. They're excellent for cooking though!

My citrus plants are dying, a 4 year old lemon tree, a 4 year old kumquat tree, a 4 year old chinotto, a 2 year old calamondin, a 2 year old lemon tree raised by seed, a grafted 1 year old lemon and a grafted 1 year old orange tree, all are showing same symptoms, leaf dropping and blackening and dying of stems, i am not overwatering it, if at all underwatering. I live in germany, so i had to take them in for winter.
@WeirdExplorer7 жыл бұрын
sorry to hear that!
@alleng61967 жыл бұрын
Could be anthracnose? "Anthracnose of citrus trees is caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Symptoms include twig dieback, premature leaf drop and dark staining on fruit. Dying leaves and twigs develop dark fungal spores. Anthracnose infections are more common after a prolonged wet spring." That sound right?

interesting, the one you tasted is different from what i have eaten. I got mine from my Calamondin tree. They where from what i can tell fully ripe, if not slightly over ripe. The did have a similar flavor to what you described, but i did not notice the peppery taste you mentioned. Ill just have to try some green ones next year.

I've tasted limequats that were quite tasty, but I think those might have been more towards overripe than yours. Not very sour at all. Or maybe the tagging was off, because it was not as oblong as yours, more round/flat.
@Chris-z6f6k7 жыл бұрын
They were probably the same as mine, Limequat Eustis. They are the most round of the limequat, check the pictures on google, they are almost a ball.
