Hey Nick and Joseph, Just wanted to tell you both something that I've been thinking for awhile. Watching these reviews, I always feel like I'm sitting in your living room after a really nice meal, and you two are describing the most recent film you've seen. Endearing and funny, I don't think there are any movie reviewers out there who do what you do, and you do it so well. Plus, one time after a really bad day at work, I admitted that I was sad and you responded to my comment. I felt heard and it made a truly rotten day end on a positive note. In fairness, I live in a very rural part of Ireland and I'm lucky if I get out to the cinema once a year. I don't have Netflix or streaming services, so I get everything- plot, story, impressions, jokes - from you lads. Thank you for being my movie screeners. You're the best! ❤

I kind of disagree and thought the trailer wasn't terrible. Didn't spoil it completely for me or my partner, and we have had movies easily ruined by trailers plenty of times in the past. I think this is because it is less of a situation of one big twist, and more a situation of a puzzle being put together (heh... Scott Baio, perhaps?) While I do think one should go in blind, I also think even if you have an idea of the twist because of the trailer it sets the gears in motion as you are trying to figure out how all the pieces fit together. My partner and I had a good time discussing things as they came up and how we felt they were going to be revealed. We were still left guessing with a lot of small things (and were sometimes wrong), like trying to predict what happened to her ear.

“Is it *that* big?” Sums up exactly how I felt about this movie. I really appreciate your guys’ review because it’s the first one that included some criticisms about this movie. It’s not a perfect movie that’s so good that you should go in blind. It’s an okay movie that’s great on a technical scale, but the story leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not so good that it deserves 1.5 hrs of your life with no prior incentive.

This was one of the best slasher films I’ve seen as of late. I thought the editing was flawless. The colors were intensely beautiful and deeply rich (I looked it up- they used Kodak film). Color was definitely a character in the film. I thought the main actress gave a stellar performance, and I loved the main actor in this (and also in The Passenger). Lots of twists, and yes it made me start to expect them. But there were enough to not know when they were coming, or not. I left the theater fully satisfied with this film. Also, the house had the most beautiful quaintness to it, all those outdoor flowers- I loved it. I would’ve enjoyed and half expected for the mountain couple to have also been psychos. That would’ve been a fun twist. Same with the last lady in the car, which I’m assuming is all intentional. Expect to see many Halloween costumes of red panties and wigs this year. And yes Joseph, you’re correct, it said “months”. Great review guys!

Great acting, fast-paced, genuinely scary and thrilling, and unique storytelling and interesting plot. However, I do wish there was like 15 mins more in the film. It was never explained how they met, (SPOILERS ahead) if she was just a regular woman or an escort, why she wears the wig in the first place, why her name is Electric Lady, why she carves her initials on her victims, why the female officer at the end didn't report her when she ran, why her hair was randomly braided, and if she's schizophrenic. She mentioned she sees devils sometimes, but why? And why does that drive her to kill? I think if we learned more about her backstory, it would've made sense. We see two characters ask her if she's the Electric Lady, but we never find out how they even know that, and if she's a famous killer? For those reasons, I give the movie a 7/10.

“If the lead character was male nobody would question his motive” Bro. Most serial killers have no real motive, they are crazy sociopaths so their gender doesn’t matter at all. But this is a movie and it needs to flesh out its characters, male or female. Atleast movies like American Psycho and Longlegs give their serial killers a chance to explain their motives. This movie just puts a few frames of a vague demon and expects us to be satisfied with that. The demon makes her do it ? Sure. Whatever.

I don’t believe the movie went south after the twist, a few punches were pulled but not many. It was the idea of that cop not explaining who he’d handcuffed over the phone to the cops that showed up, I couldn’t buy that. And that rookie cop, treating the girl as a victim; ah, no. Only in a movie: cops always treat everyone at a scene they’ve just walked into as a suspect, until backup arrives.

*Spoilers* I assumed there would be a twist based on the fact that the story was being told out of order. The scene with Kyle entering the home and finding Ed Begley Jr layed out in the kitchen all but confirmed it. The earliest clue is when Willa reaches for her cigarette and alcohol stash in the middle of nowhere, which only makes sense in retrospect. Another twist I saw coming is when Kyle is hunting Willa, he is no longer role playing. The way I read this movie is that Willa wanted to die but for some reason couldn't do it herself even when she sees the devil in her own reflection. At the very end, she looks almost grateful when the other woman shoots her. Growing up, I remember Ed Begley Jr. being in everything, so it's weird to see him pop up now while he's semi retired looking exactly the same. Barbara Hershey looks fantastic for 76. An interesting bit of trivia is that both Willa and Kyle have a connection to the Scream franchise. Willa played the lead in the now forgotten TV series and Kyle was in Scream 5.

I just got out of it and I agree with Nick that it wasn’t that big of a twist. I also think that going in knowing there’s a twist, it makes it pretty easy to figure out where it’s headed. I thought it was also obvious that Kyle’s character was a cop of some kind because why else would he be chasing her ass unless he was a cop. Also at the end, I interpreted it as she was going to shoot herself, not the woman who picked her up in the truck. It seemed that she saw “the devil” or whatever it was she saw in people, in herself, and was going to turn the gun on herself. Then when the woman shoots her, it was as if she looked at her with adoration as she was dying. I could be way off but that’s how I saw it! Also so glad you mentioned the breakfast being made because I was laughing during that scene 😂

Is that vague enough for anyone reading the comments but not watching the spoiler review just yet? I liked that our empathy was with various characters we didn't expect to care about. Certainly no masterpiece but a really enjoyable and to the point riff on the serial killer flick.

If you bought the line about "seeing devils" then you would've been one of the victims. The killer isn't "mindless," they're a sadistic sociopath and an expert manipulator. The victim is the only person they're ever honest with throughout the entire movie because they shared one of the most intimate moments in their life during the serial killer roleplay. They do it because they get a visceral thrill from manipulating and overpowering people, and likely was inspired by watching True Crime and being enamored with the glamor of serial killing. But Ed Bagley .Jr gives the point away with the line about his wooden leg. It doesn't matter how good you are at killing people, if you keep doing it then eventually it will catch up with you in the way you least expect or want. When they claim to see devils they're trying to present an image of insanity to see if they can work the angles even after being caught. They kill the cop because they can see through the look in his eyes that he doesn't buy it. He's killed because they're afraid of being caught & punished to the full extent of the law. That the fun times are about to run out in the most boring way possible. When they look in the mirror they see a human being because they're a solipsist.

I was expecting something more from this movie because they are using a quote from Stephen King calling it a “Clever Masterpiece” on TikTok and Instagram ads for the movie. Only for me to clock the gag around the 16 minute mark when Kyle finds Ed Begley Jr dead in the kitchen. It was so obvious from the start they really shouldn’t have showed Ed dead so early. Indeed. I saw that movie in its original language (french) and you are soooo right Haute Tension AKA High Tension has a twist I did not see coming LOL. Although, I do feel like they sorta cheated in that film. For example: there is a scene at the beging where the "killer" is doing something naughty with the decapitated head while sitting in his car... but how could the "killer" have been doing that if the "killer" really was the girl simultaneously driving down the road with her friend in the other car. Re-watch the film and you'll see what I mean LOL. Nonetheless it was an awesome film. #BIGHUGS

My partner and I watched this last night and we really enjoyed it. Went in blind aside from the trailer, all that. The only thing I'd heard was that people were calling it Tarantino-esque but we didn't see that comparison AT ALL. If anything, it reminded me a bit more of Memento in the way the non linear structure makes you constantly think about what you've been shown and how it is going to come into play when you get to see what preceeded it. And personally, I like that. It makes it less of a gimmick and more of an effective storytelling tool. Not really any complaints from my partner or me, the only thing he felt was a weaker point was the simplistic dialogue. But we also both discussed that and felt it didn't impact our overall impression as better dialogue between characters wasn't really required for this narrative. Loved the performances regardless. It was one hell of a fun rollercoaster ride.

Soon as anyone prints "startling twist" and attaches it to a trailer about a man and a woman's romance gone bad, I'm going to automatically assume the victim is the perpetrator. Because what other alternative is there?? PR firms and advertising workers all need to be re-educated on how to hype a film and retain its' mystery. The last twenty-odd trailers I've ever watched showed me enough to figure out their movies. Fortunately, I never watch trailers of movies that I'm going to see. 🤣🤣

This was the best movie of 2024 by a landslide and Willa's performance was one of the best I've ever seen. Her and Kyle were hot on screen and Willa's sexy af 😍. As a Scream fan this is Emma Duval meets Vince Schneider (Kyle also played in a Scream property, Scream 2022). Their Scream characters. The Scream crossover I never knew I needed. She was so freaking intelligent and the perfect psycho. I loved the twists and reveals. A few people in the theater yelled out HOLY SHIT when it was revealed she was the real serial killer.

Well, I think it is not only about the twists (there where so many, right up to the end where I envisioned the Electric Lady shooting the woman who saved her wiht the second gun she got from the cops) but also about reversing the roles from the always male killer to being a female. No other narrative needed. There were several scenes in that movie that made that clear. People and audience always rooting for the female in movies. So for me, there's more to it than style over substance. And has anyone recognized the scrolling and narrated intro card and connected it to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? At this point I was hooked and thought: I'm in for a ride. Easily one of the best movies this year for me. Yeah, I was not surprised that much concerning the twists, but the delivery and the end were impeccable. Sometimes stuff that has been left out of the narrative makes it a better movie. 4.5 out of 5 for me.

As soon as Joseph mentioned there was a twist (and I knew already it was a movie involving a man & woman and a serial killer on the loose as the elements of this movie) I already knew it had to be the woman that was the serial killer. But... It being told out of order and having us miss a huge chunk of needed information and dropped into an apparent escape of a woman on the run from someone trying to kill her; I would've been suspicious that the missing information of chapter 1 & 2 would've put that scene into proper context and it might be that she tried to kill this man who was able to get the upper hand. Twist endings are all the rage these days so making that leap would have been something I would have done just on that information alone. The last film to surprise me was Blink Twice. But my comment on that is there lol not going to repeat myself.

I think it would have been more interesting to not label the chapters and just present the story out of order and let the audience figure it out themselves… i mean this isnt a complicated story and theres essentially only 2 main characters so not like itd be hard to piece together. I just hated the chapters being labeled cuz as soon as i saw that i knew i was being misled and manipulated and info was being held back… maybe im being nitpicky cuz not like it would make that much of a difference but im just frustrated at how hand holdy movies have to be now. Its like writers and studios are literally afraid someone who goes to see their movie nay be a little confused. I wonder if the chapter labels was even the directors idea or if the studio mandated that to make the movie more straightforward for mainstream audiences

@@Allgloss312 Although I have yet to see the film I agree that labeling the chapters will give away too much for me. This reminds me of a Netflix show which gave you the option to play out of order. It was a mystery or psychological thriller... I think based on a true story. But I was too lazy to "skip around" lol so I just let it play in whatever order it was already in. It was an ok movie but not really my thing. I do not mind seeing a movie that starts five minutes before the end and then cuts to black and the narrator saying something like: "To tell this properly of how I got here I must bring you back to three weeks earlier..." A screen fades to black and the screen reads "3 weeks earlier" lol! As cliche as those kind of movies are I am a sucker for them! But tell the story from in order mostly. Don't jump around. LOL!

I can't think of a worse idea than adding trauma to yet another horror film. It's ok for her to just be a psycho.

Yeah, I didn’t get why so many people are loving this movie & telling everyone to see it bc it’s unlike any movie before. Agree with the small changes, that would’ve made this movie go from okay to a must watch. But this is not another Promising Young Woman, & don’t get why people are “proclaiming it’s a better version of that movie” or “the best twist in a thriller” it’s good, but it’s not re-watchable if that makes sense.

I just watched this movie and stylistically, I enjoyed it. I like the idea of a woman being a mindless killer for no reason (Debbie from Adams Family Value is one of my all time favorite villains). But this movie lost me in the final act when the lady cop came in and the male cop (and the audience) thinks the lady cop is naive/stupid for helping who she perceives as an injured victim. That entire ending was such a mess and I think the filmmaker’s misogyny really came out big time. This movie was gonna be a 4 star for me and it dropped down to a 3 star.

I don’t think we’re supposed to view the female cop as foolish for trusting the killer. At the beginning of the movie we did the same thing as her, came into a scene of a man hurting a woman and immediately assumed we knew what was happening. But as the movie goes on we learn not be so naive, just like the male cop at the end. The cops’ gender doesn’t matter in the end, it’s their experience that is the biggest difference.

😂 I HATED this movie with a passion. Insufferable from minute one. It’s like the filmmakers are so so pleased with themselves for coming up with such an obvious twist and hiding it in pointless non-linear structure. Also I find the theme of this movie empty at best, pernicious at worst. Especially that scene with the two police REALLY rubbed me the wrong way.

I think they explained her logic tho, however twisted it was. She only killed people she felt slighted/judged by even though they didn’t mean to make her feel that way. I think in a way it was criticizing white feminism and how white women feel justified in their violence towards other people, especially men / authority figures. I think that’s why she was killed by an indigenous woman in the end. She had another gun and could have killed the indigenous woman but deciding not to was a concession of her own guilt/monstrosity

The only thing I didn't like was the police woman character as she was not believably written compared to all the others. She was not smart at all and that frustrated me during the final act.

I enjoyed the movie, and the framing is unique, but ultimately, the framing doesnt' really make sense to me. I don't get why the story was told out of order. The movie doesn't justify it. It's not like memento where the backwards plot makes sense because of the character. This felt more like a cool magic trick.
@Allgloss312

Yeah i agree as much as i enjoyed the framing and attempts at subversion it pretty much only exists in non chronological order to misdirect the audience. Which yes, does make the viewing experience more interesting but i think strong writers can create misdirection and surprise the audience without having to resort to that sort of trickery. BUT for me this is very much a style over substance film and i feel like its self aware of that fact so i dont mind that the nonchronological plot progression is basically done just for style.

The movie plays out of order because it wants to play on our biases to make us aware of them. Not just our sexism but also how we assume things when we shouldn't. Reminds me of a true story I heard where a father was out with his baby at a playground and some woman came and tried to kidnapped the baby by claiming the baby was hers. Bystanders came in and held the father down because they assumed he was the bad guy. Luckily the baby was later found and everyone was okay.

@@StevenE-l9y yes i totally acknowledge this but i feel like the writing isnt as strong as i would want when a film has such ambitious intentions. Its still effective but flawed IMHO. And i still feel strongly that the non chronological order is mostly a stylistic choice because i dont think that sort of chronological obfuscation need be the only way to hammer those points home.
