The Brett Curtis character really looked the part - he absolutely oozed the confidence-trickster / villain with his suave, villainous appearance ! A good, suspense -filled film, though a little predictable.

An Edgar Ulmer (of The Black Cat and Detour fame) noir. With no big name stars. Just what a serious noir fan would love. Like Joseph H Lewis, Ulmer could turn low budget rocks into gold.

Everyone was raving about what a good & interesting movie this was (& it is), BUT THE ENDING MAKES NO SENSE TO ME WHATSOEVER!! I enjoyed all the suspense & cleverness, but I feel like it was almost a complete waste of time, because I haven't a clue what happened in the end!! I wouldn't mind a little "spoiler alert!!"

Agree, horrible end. Since his girlfriend was not dead and he walks away with her, I'm going with he was just knocked unconscious and since his nightmares/premonitions saved his mother, this night nightmare/ premonition was validating his good job with his last nightmare. So I'm guessing he's is unconscious, last nightmare. All good job saving mom. All good catching his fathers eluded killer, everyone is alive and OK and Paul will have a massive bump on his knoging with a headache for a while. Ever notice how this "kid" towers over all the men, lol

No he does not die, he is finishing his dream and his girl friend has joined him towards the end of his dream, so he will wake up with a happy ending just after the movie says, The End. They don't show the waking scene, it is implied, because it makes the end of movie more interesting. But your question is a very good one.

The hum, so annoying, finally ends. This movie is not a true, Film Noir, however it uses some of, Film Noir, techniques such as very dark filming and often high contrast white. This movie was made during the time period of,Film Noir and some of the camera work,(cinematography), is heavily influenced by it in this film.
