I’ve lived through several partial solar eclipses where the skies got a little funky and strange shadows showed the eclipse on the ground. But I’ve never experienced a solar eclipse with totality. This 2024 eclipse was coming over my house in downtown Weisburg, Indiana but only giving at best 1 to 2 minutes of totality. I did some research and found if I drove about 48 miles northwest to Morristown, Indiana we could be almost directly under the center line of the eclipse path and experience a full 4 minutes of totality! So Jean and I packed up the car and headed out to the Asbury Cemetery just 1/2 mile from downtown Morristown, Indiana. There I setup my video camera in a stationary position to film the event and 5 minutes before totality I threw up the drone and just let it hover at 300 feet to capture the beginning and end of totality from the sky.
I’m very fortunate as I have seen quite a few amazing things in my life but this definitely rates in the top 5. I will never forget April 8, 2024.
I had almost an hour of video but cut it down to about 20 minutes. I separated it into three sections so you can decide what you want to watch.
Section 1 is the stationary camera on the ground in real time along with background conversations from Jean and I along with the ooos and ahhs of the other 20 people also watching in the cemetery. The original clip is 42 minutes but I cut this down to just 8 minutes covering the main event.
Section 2 is the 8 minutes of the stationary camera again but the film is speeded up and the entire event condensed into about a 2 minute time frame.
Section 3 is the drone in real time featuring the main part of the eclipse over a 14 minute time frame.
While the drone was up, a strange shadow appeared racing across the field before totality. I'm thinking it was a jet contrail???? Let me know what you think in the comments below.
Enjoy!

We live in Missouri. My wife and I got to experience a 98% totality. I thought that was going to be spectacular. But there is a huge difference in a 98 and 100%. I wish the wife and I could have driven the 5 hours and got our lawn chairs out and sat with you guys. That would’ve been very cool. Thank you so much for sharing!

Glad you had the chance to experience it. The eclipse was an experience that you can never fully describe in words or pictures. You have to personally experience going from light to dark in a matter of seconds to understand totality. The 2045 eclipse should be a lot closer to your house though.

It brought Tears to my eyes!! Two very important people I've had planned for years to experience it with me, My father who recently passed, and My fiance that decided she wanted to be with someone else a couple months prior because I was diagnosed with leukemia. Didn't sign up for hospice she says.. In this video when I heard her say, "Thank you for sharing this with me" Ahghh man it's still hitting me.. I loved hearing that. Loved the video.. My mother and I, she is 76 and I am 50, we drove 4 hourse together to be in the path of totality and I am very thankful I got to experience with her.. The darkness around us and the temperature drop was just as impressive as the Corona, Baileys beads, and the diamond ring.. Most Bitter sweet moment of my life. I was very fortunate. Satolli, you know I love your channel, and am working to get the 1859 M. Schab pipe organ (in Covington Cathedral) covered by you & the team. But this beautiful work on the Total Eclipse is just so beautiful. When the JS Bach C major Prelude/WTK came on, it brought together two beautiful aspects of the universe. I thought, "well, he probably figured he had about 2 minutes, so maybe that's how he chose the Bach." However you chose it, it was perfect. Your wife adds so much, too! You guys really documented for generations the beauty and the magnitude of this past Monday afternoon. Thank you!

Thank you for uploading this video. I shared and discussed it with my 90 year old disavled mother who was unable to see the eclipse firsthand. It made me reminiscent of the midday crucifixion of Jesus and gave us an idea of how the land and sky would have looked. I had always assumed a total eclipse would turn the day completely dark, including sky, but I learned from your video that the horizon remains bright. Lovely share, well done, Mom and I are grateful for your generosity!

BEST VIDEO OF THE 2024 ECLIPSE ON THE INTERNET!!!!! I wonder if the shadow moving across the field was an effect of the partial phasing into the edge of total. I observed 97.8 percent of the eclipse. We experienced a gradual fade of sunlight and then in the blink of eye everything became significantly dimmer. However, I was the only one in my group to notice it because everyone else had their glasses on and at that moment. I didn't. I just remember thinking that the edge of the moons shadow just passed by.

Awesome video! I know that cemetery well. My father-in-law is buried there along with many other members of my wife's family. I've flown over there many times in my powered parachute (videos on my channel). As for the shadow, at first I thought it may be a jet contrail shadow, but it may too narrow and well defined for that. I'll do some digging. Excellent work!

I have seen many con-trails pass over head and I believe this was just that. The caveat is that I have not witnessed a passing con-trail during an eclipse. Remember how the shadows became more defined and sharpened edges during an eclipse, so maybe this was the cause of the narrow shadow band?

Awesome video thanks for sharing this….the closest I got to seeing any eclipse was when I was a young teenager, and then it was only a partial eclipse. Any other time the clouds obscured the view. I would have loved to be where you were and taking pictures of this myself. It is rare to view a total eclipse, especially if one lives outside the pathway of the moon with the sun. Again, truly spectacular view you captured. Thank you for the experience….👍❤️🙏🏼

Seeing the lights come on in this video got me to thinking of what it would have been like for the Ancients who didn't have automatic lights. The view must have been even more eerie back then. I wasn't in the path of totality, but at 98.something%. It got dark here, as some described it, "like right before a severe thunderstorm but without the strong winds."

The solitary shadow stripe was probably a contrail. However at 19:20 I think I see shadow bands or shadow snakes (some people call it that) on the ground. That is an eclipse phenomenon caused by the edge of the shadow being diffracted by the atmosphere. It appears in the moments just before and after totality. Nice work!

If you look at the cirrus clouds in your (first) stationary video, you can see the east/northeast progression of the shadow. We saw the approaching shadow coming from the southwest at my location. The shadow from the title (6:48) was probably a contrail in the wind. Shadow bands happen on a much smaller scale. They're shown contrast-enhanced in this video from 2017: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2jNZ39nfL2Vabcsi=HH24oG5idjK1-NoR&t=388

The shadow looked like a contrail shadow that appeared to cross the ground because the moon was blocking off the sun's light causing the light to hit the ground from a slightly different angle in the sky making the contrail shadow to "move." I was hoping you had captured the moon's shadow racing across the earth at Mach 2, but you might need mountains in the background to see it.

Thanks for the coverage! I've seen some pretty sad attempts, and I've seen some great Eclipse work. The shadow; It seems narrow and pretty densely defined for an old contrail. I'm gonna say, yes it's a Con. And yes, it's a trail. But is it just a contrail? Did you notice planes passing over? Where you able to tell where they flew? Maybe you where too busy to notice their direction. Even though exposed now, Chemtrails must still be a thing occasionally since contrails survive no more than a few minutes.

In the drone footage there is a very prominent white line of a cloud near the top of the screen. But the way the sun is shining I don't think I could be that. But it's definitely a weird looking cloud that's just a straight line with a bulbous tip on the right side of cloud.

Did anyone notice the possible UFOs at the 21 minute mark, as the drone starts to rotate north, about mid sky, you will see a flashing light that looks cylindrical. Then at 21:15, facing east, you will see another cylindrical, stationary, light. At 21:34, the camera stops, facing south, and you will see a small flashing light that appears mid sky, just left of center, and the light rises up just a bit and then just disappears. Pretty interesting to me!

I've never heard of this, but I think based on your drone pointing south and the moon shadow approaching from the southwest you may have documented something previously unseen or unknown in the form of a preceding thermal wave or in other words a temperature gradient that I see here is properly oriented before the shadow. Such thermal shock waves can effect the behavior of light itself. i think you captured this in your video and should share it with NASA since they're always wanting to learn from citizen scientists.
