Another great video! Do you ever run a metal detector through the pits? It seems some coins or jewelry could have been dropped as well .
@jerryb8278 Жыл бұрын
I like to screen sift some artifact layer dirt when at a particularly wealthy pit. And, either my partner or I (whoever is not working in the pit at that time) will run a detector over the dig pile as new inches of dirt are added. But a metal detector is sort of a pain in the ass due to tons of small iron.

Love your enthusiasm when you find something good. Do these former outhouse pits smell bad, and are they bacteria infested? I know they are over 100 years old, and that you do find undigested seeds.
@jerryb8278 Жыл бұрын
They don't have any distinct flavor compared to regular dirt (or smell, ha) Actually sometimes they're a lil funky, but to me that's coming from old, rotting timbers on a wood lined pit...or just because of the water table inhibiting aerobic bacteria growth (and encouraging anaerobic bacteria, the stinky kind) But no real poo smell, generally speaking

If you've done these with 3 dogs for a total of 3200 miles, then you should know it's deadly and calming things like this channel help ease the pain. How many comments has the creator replied to? Unless he sends his thoughts through you, how are you speaking for him? He seems like he has a great heart and would find peace knowing someone is fighting to stay alive and watching his videos for strength. That's just my opinion, I don't speak for him. God bless. I'm assuming that intact beer & soda bottles are less common in these outhouse pits because they could be returned and refilled? I remember as a kid in Boulder Colo. we'd take empty soda bottles to the "pop-shop" for filling. If I recall correctly, you got a discount for bringing empty bottles back.

I am totally amazed by the number of bottles that are laying in the ground. Why have people tossed them on the ground in such a way without any thought about the potential harm caused by either the contents if the glass is broken, or the danger of broken glass?
@jerryb8278 Жыл бұрын
Oh summer child (I kid)...people into even the early 1980's still put used motor oil on weeds in fence rows to kill and keep down weed growth. Imagine the carelessness about 90 years before the end of the oil dumping era?!? BTW, those bottles were thrown down into the pee and poop in the shithouse, not just thrown onto the ground.

Hey Tom, how do you clean the bottles when they're really packed and stained from mineral deposits or something from the ground? Do you use a strong cleaner or mild acid ? I've dug many bottles from our backyard and most have tough interior stains. I found a blue pottery spittoon way back when I was a kid. Gave it to mom and she recently gave it back to me. Got to be pre-1900 I think. A lot of Germanic Tonic's and flat top cork medicine bottles in this yard. (Essex county Mass.) Love your channel. Been watching for a while now. peace
