I've seen St Elmo's Fire on a ship. Middle of the night near an intense thunder storm. Felt an electric buzz in the air, looked around, and there was a blue glow outside the bridge. On top of a small antenna sat a blue ball of light!

You don't only see new weather. You see weather in a different way. Before becoming a glider pilot i would have never stared at clouds so much 😂

Totally agree ..I allways looked at clouds all my life , now learning to fly gliders , and clouds are a story in themselves ...ha ha ...I see people looking down a lot ( u.k. island life) myself allways looking at the clouds ha ha 😂😂😂😂

💯. Best part of an IFR flight is when you get an altitude that's just right to "cloud surf".

Best “fireworks” show I ever saw was from a 727 somewhere over the eastern US. A heat lightening show in the dead of night that had the most amazing colors. Lasted about 15 minutes until we flew past it.

While definitely not strange, simple high altitude Cirrus clouds are one of my favorites! These so called "fair weather clouds" impart a very pleasant look to the blue skies. Also, Cirrus clouds are a good indicator that contrails might form, resulting in a perfect day for some high altitude plane spotting!

You should see the dirt storms that approach Amarillo Texas from a jet. Especially when you are holding at the FAF waiting for its event horizon to pass the airport boundary so the 180 degree wind shift is over to make landing possible.

A Cessna 182 we bought had been in a hail storm and was peppered with small dents. It didn't affect the flying and saved us a lot of money due to it looking less than pristene. I sure do miss that plane.

Heat lightning is any lightning or lightning-induced illumination too far away for thunder to be heard. Heat lightning got its name because it is often seen on hot summer nights when thunderstorms are common. What you have described is sheet lightning.

Hi Joe, this is a great video but in all videos I’m always distracted by how great your English accent is. I’ve lived in Munich for 18 years now but I’m originally from Liverpool in northwestern England. That means I’ve heard countless German people speaking English. Your accent is great because you’re not trying to be “posh English” and speak with received pronunciation, but rather your accent sounds like a neutral regional accent, which is how most ordinary people sound. Anyway, great job and great channel! Greetings from London 😊

On the clear air turbulence video example you put at 9:36, I can see some lenticular clouds in the distance. Are they somehow related? Or is that a clip that would have explained the dangers of getting close to these types of clouds rather than as an example far CATs?

Me: I open the video, see a hat lying on the bed, and have to avert visual contact by covering up that part of the screen for the remainder. It's (allegedly, but true) terrible luck putting a hat on a bed, to begin with, but a NY Yankees hat might alienate half your audience, to boot! 😬
