Some more points with regards to inventory management, you can use square button to go into a menu, where you can filter items, like low rarity items, items with particular job affinity etc. and also store items in a secondary storage stash, which is only available outside of missions, and which allows you to store upto 4000 items, if I remember correctly Also, you were able to Filter, Select All and dismantle in previous versions as well, latest version just made it more accessible.

"I'm not mad, that's just how I am." - Jack Garland, 2022.
@unboundking97422 жыл бұрын
I think one of the best pieces of characterization for Jack is a throwaway line in like the Temple of Earth? There's a spot with basically a horde of monsters ahead and I think Jed says charging into that group is suicide. And then Jack replies with something along the lines of: "Then let's find another way around, I'm not about to die here." He's not hell bent on fighting forward to the point that he'll disregard the safety of himself and others like an unhinged crazy person, he's just the kind of guy who unfortunately always comes off as an overly blunt/smarmy prick, kinda like Emet Selch in FFXIV. Jack absolutely needs a motivation to take action or else he can't even think about moving forward with anything. Give him a goal and he'll set himself to it 100%, for sure, but he's not so about his cause that he'll disregard warnings, he's at least conscientious enough to accept caution willingly, particularly if it's coming from someone trying to help him accomplish his goal. That becomes more and more apparent as the game goes on, but that's kinda going into spoilers.

Love the review, it's great seeing people genuinely enjoy Jack's game. A small thing I wanted to mention here is that when you manually select gear to dismantle, even if you have your party members gear selected the games smart enough to not dismantle those pieces of gear. It also won't dismantle any "important" gear like the starting clothes and DLC weapons.

Makes you wonder how WoL and Jack garland will handle each other after FF1 due to everything we learned in this game about why Garland did what he did and the Lufenians being the True Antagonist of the series. Of course we are getting a bit of that answer in Dissidia Opera Omnia. Also, some of the side lore hinting that Lufenians can dimension travel is a scary thought because that means even with their plans defeated in FF1 world, they can travel to a new world in another dimension to create a new cycle for their plans or to harvest the energy they need to maintain their new paradise. More so when there are hints saying Lufenians maybe responsible for causing events of all FF games behind the scenes. The side lore literally states that the Lufenians use their advance technology to literally make a 1 to 1 copy of locations from other dimensions their technology allow them to reach which those are the other worlds of FF series. So ya those locations in Stranger Paradise are literally meant to be perfect copies of those locations from those FF game.
@infernaldisdain80512 жыл бұрын
Well we at least know that SoP and FF1 are different worlds with Garland not recognizing Jack (But Jack knowing the name Garland because of his adventures) and the weirdness going on with Garland and WoL going on currently in the story.
@orrthehunter2 жыл бұрын
@@infernaldisdain8051 I have a feeling they maybe related to the upcoming DLC stuff for SoP and what it may mean for FF1 and maybe FF series as a whole. We've known that Lufenians have been dipping into other FF worlds behind the scenes so revealing SoP and FF1 being separate worlds maybe one of the hints. Final Fantasy Origins Strangers of Paradise maybe a more literal title than we may have originally assumed since titles of a game/story is often a reflection of what the story is sometimes. It is just a Theory but maybe FFOrigins may mean the story of SoP is how the entire FF game series became created and everything that happens in each FF game is the result of SoP due to what we learn about the Lufrenians and their dimension traveling technology.
@unnamed_protagonist2 жыл бұрын
In the game the notes laying around and the text on the loading screens seem to suggest that they have only observed the other ff dimensions, and not actively interfered in any of them except Cornelia, which is their "test" world. Other than that, all the dimensions develop as they are meant to with no outside meddling Except, funnily enough, for Dimesion 15, where the loading screen text says that they had introduced small, measured packets of darkness to that dimension. Which can be interpreted in a meta sense to say that FF15 was a world that was changed by outside forces meddling with it. Hmmmmmm.
@SaiyanGamer952 жыл бұрын
About the Lufenians possibly causing trouble for all other FF games, I'm sort of reminded of FFIV: The After Years. The final boss of that game is The Creator and it has bosses from previous FF games (1 through 6) under his command. Not only that, but the Creator also says the Crystals it use (which were present in games 1 through 5) record the evolutionary paths of the worlds they inhabit. Some believe that those worlds were also destroyed by the Creator because the humans failed to live up to its expectation.
@orrthehunter2 жыл бұрын
@@unnamed_protagonist I suspect there is a lot more we are not being told yet but I guess that is for the DLC stories and future events of Opera Omnia. We still don't have data about how the Lufenians reacted to the loss of their plans in the FF1 world so if they introduce a DLC focusing on Post-FF1, we may get some very important lores about Lufenian technology and status of their civilization after events of FF1.

The gameplay is an absolute blast, the music is outstanding as usual, and Jack himself is absolutely refreshing as a protagonist. Side note: if you loved the gameplay systems and the general flow, then there’s a game very similar to this called Final Fantasy: Explorers on the 3DS. Gameplay in the final fantasy universe split into missions, with TONS of jobs and every job has over a dozen unlockable active skills making the combat enthralling. The gameplay loops are just so addictive, it’s incredibly underrated. Oh and what’s even better? It doesn’t have the flawed loot system from this game. Instead it pulls from the loot crafting of Monster Hunter with armour and weapons based off the monster parts you use. No scrapping needed, every piece of loot is unique and meaningful. Plus you can catch monsters to use as party members, and the cameo armour sets/weapons come with limit breaks from past Final Fantasy titles like Omnislash and Lionheart. Finally every unique attack skill is customisable, so you could add haste to a heal, mod a fireball to turn your enemy mini, have attack skills affect AoE or reduce armour etc. Based off some of the other games you’ve played, I feel like you’d absolutely love it. Please give it a shot if you read this comment, and you haven’t already played it!

To answer your question about what games we’re playing. I recently started a new play-through FF9. While doing so I remembered a very fond memory as I realized I was imagining all of the dialogue through the vocal range of my older brother from when he was a pre-teen. I had a lot of performance anxiety with games as a child and my brother played the entire game while reading everything aloud for me and never left me out of the experience the whole way through! Remembering it all again has greatly elevated my enjoyment of this classic title.

Ah, loot and dismantling. As someone who put thousands of hours into their past game, the Nioh series, that became simple to organize. Big Numbers good, Anything Below Purple = Not Worth Keeping. But that changes after NG+ into Green, and then eventually Orange after NG+3 or something. Part of the addiction was the dopamine from pumping big numbers, big damage, and big loot from a boss. Surprisingly those games have better fidelity too. Anyhow, my only drawback from trying Strangers of Paradise really is the graphics. Even after playing Nioh 1 at 720p on my PS4 for years, this time I couldn't do it. Update: I went back again, and holy shit the game is so good I don't mind. Its a Nioh all over again! There are some aspects that were clearly cut or rushed. For example I'm pretty sure Cornelia was supposed to be an actual town where you could freely walk around at some point. The weird dialog menu has all the typical dialog that you would normally have and in the later mission in Cornelia you can also see item and smith shops. I wonder if it's related to the performance problems the game has on the PS4. Like why record all the dialog and design the location and then not make it an exporable location? Was it too laggy? The story also felt kind of rushed at certain points and the part where Jack went for a walk for no reason right before the climax was really, really weird. I wonder if it was a budget problem or something else.
@Evanz1112 жыл бұрын
I think you’re right about Cornelia. The only bit I have to add is the repeated NPC dialogue was actually intentional (like the one you have with the Biggs and Wedge substitutes) - they say the same incredibly generic and basic dialogue despite showing in a new chapter menu, but the devs threw that in as a cute Easter egg to how basic and uninspired the NPC dialogue was in Final Fantasy 1 haha, I kinda liked that

That's just downright terrible. PS5 version had some issues as well but at least y'all had a 1080p option for a nice not ugly 60fps

Considering there are combat levels in the city, maybe. Even if it was a cut corner, I didn't mind how Cornelia was presented. I find it a chore when I need to run around to talk to EVERY NPC in games like Fire Emblem Three Houses just for the world building. Making it a menu makes it so much less of a hassle.

Finally, a reviewer who actually bothered to not only play the game post ending and see all the other stuff the game had to offer, but also payed close attention to the story, details, and nuances that SOOOOO many other reviewers either completely missed or misunderstood. There are still those who think this game is a remake of FF1 despite the title, trailers, and even SE on numerous occasions, clearly stating otherwise. It's a PREQUEL! I love this game and considered it by current GOTY. It does a lot of things that both 7Remake and XV wanted to do but much better. Is it perfect? No. Is it rough around the edges? Absolutely. But it's a very fun and challenging game with a lot of heart and soul in it and I'm super surprised that Square's first outing with a Souls-style game turned out to be this good. You've earned a subscriber, and I don't say that lightly. EDIT: Alot of the issues regarding sorting your equipment have been patched now, you can sort by name, rarity, affinity type, item type, special effects, and who is wearing them.

For my part, I think what killed Chaos difficulty for me wasn't the anima crystals, it was the combination of the item level increases and needing to level up each stage separately. All I wanted from Chaos was to hit an item level cap so I could start fully customizing gear and playing with builds, something I never felt the main game supported due to rapidly increasing gear levels. Instead Chaos is just . . . more of the same, but with a TON of grinding. I leveled one mission up to 300, but the thought of needing to do that for EVERY OTHER mission before I could just play through the whole game with actual builds at item level 300 killed my interest in continuing.

@@J-grittyI still think the DLC structure is alienating to the average player, as it leans into NG+ mechanics being forced whereas in Nioh and even Wo Long you were never forced to up the difficulty and engage and in them. I've got. A lot to say, and an odd relationship with this game? I've kinda felt something in my chest for the better part of a decade about FF1. It could be remade as a Soulslike and it would probably work fine. It's story was thin as hell but had breadcrumbs you could actually make something tasty out of. It would also offend the least amount of people, whereas FF7R made it clear touching any of the "beloved ones" would lead to some type of controversy no matter how you did it. Dissidia 012, particularly its Reports and Cycle 000 also kinda cemented in my mind that you could absolutely make some interesting lore/plot for FF1. Replaying FF1 like every other month because I love ignoring my backlog made it clear the game was fairly open. Once you pop Lich, you can effectively say fuck it and defeat the remaining Fiends in any order, despite Kraken and Tiamat's areas clearly being harder than what you're intended to tackle after Lich. That reminded me so much of how DaS1's design was. There's a clear difficulty progression for areas, sure, but with some bullshiting you can absolutely get through the harder areas that're available for that very reason. Annnd then Dissidia NT happened instead. That was kind of heartbreaking in a lot of ways for me, but at the same time, Team Ninja helped make it so the combat aspect was at least good even if everything else kinda tanked. And then Team Ninja made the Nioh duology and eventually was chosen to make SoP at their next project. Won't lie, I was sort of hoping they'd find Miyazaki in a dark alley or a swamp somewhere and ask From to do it so it'd be closer to DaS1 or now I suppose ER. But since TN was already familiar, SoP ended up being a lot closer to Nioh with its Mission Design, RNG Loot progression for your gear with ungodly amounts of affix farming at some points, and of course, a ton of assets being reused from both Nioh and NT. The mission design choice from Nioh was kind of a bummer, but at least they made up for it with the level design being the way it is. The story was definitely noice. I initially brainstormed some nonsense off the initial reveal like this being some messed up version of FF1 where you're several cycles deep things start breaking, 1 out of 4 WoLs didn't make it one cycle and the rest still remember they want vengeance even when they're supposed to have been completely wiped of their memories. The demo kinda revealed it was going a completely different direction lol. And then the dark crystals sealed the deal. I doubt this'll link into Dissidia's Canon even if we include the potential 3rd DLC "A Different Future" or something, but I guess this would be World C as far as another original take goes? Maybe World D according to someone if Opera Omina takes place in a World C instead of B after Chaos and Cosmos's story was done. Wasn't expecting Astos of all people to become the broest bro who ever bro'd. But thank god this is the right timeline for him. I love him so much. The party members are okay to cool. Kinda missed Matoya, and the village of all of Link's descendants, but whatever, maybe they'll be DLC. Gameplay-wise, I feel like I never bothered to block? Soul Shield may cost break gauge yes, but even if the gauge is basically at 1, you can still Soul Shield with semi-perfect if not then perfect timing. But beyond that, there's also the fact that Lightbringer not only lets you Soul Shield without Break Gauge cost, but also fully restores your Break Gauge once it wears off. This created a sort of loop for me where I'd just use Lightbringer to learn Soul Shield timings and then alternate between Lightbringer and regular Break Gauge as needed, effectively almost turning the game into Sekiro. The two sets you can swap between also have different Break Gauges, so you can quickly swap between one or the other if you find yourself in what would otherwise only be described as an "oh shit, jesus take the wheel!" moment. Eventually, I realized Haste, Reinforce, and Quick Charge from Red Mage 250% Affinity(?) all increased the speed of Zantetsuken on Breaker. Break Gauge recovery from Berserker Affinity (I think 120% for BG recovery 2?) makes it so that every hit you land gives back some Break Gauge. And putting all this together and using Spoilerbringer to quickly loop Zantetsuken made things die horrifically fast even on Chaos mode and would refund almost the entire Break Gauge for Soul Shielding then Zantetsukening a motherfucker. The moment they stagger is the moment Spoilerbringer would be popped for even more Zantetsukens that would usually stagger them again and again until phase change or death. Though I guess Spoilerbringer w/Berserker and Red Mage would also have the same effect with the bonus of not needing to be next to people to spam level 3 spells, so even missions like the 50ish enemy one you seemingly almost had a stroke from get quickly dismantled from a safe distance. The inventory management issues kinda just feel like Nioh-isms that were solved by Nioh 2, but just didn't get addressed in this game for whatever behind the scenes reasons, which sucks given they didn't even get to add transmog which was a mainstay in Nioh as well. Chaos mode feels like a bare bones version of Nioh's additional difficulties, with all of the higher Item Level versions of missions being available from the start for you to grind through specifically. In some ways, I prefer that to Nioh, in other ways, some progression feels lost, but then again, in Nioh 2, jumping into Underworld asap provided a lot more for your progression than actually bothering with Dream of the Nioh, so eh. Overall, I'd say I definitely love this game. It's probably gonna be a cult classic if anything at all. And the DLCs do have a chance to elevate it, like how Nioh 1's continuous QoL changes throughout its life brought it from like a 6 or a 7ish for Woolie to like an 8 or a 9, or something along those lines. There's still potential room for it to grow, and I don't think anyone would mind more content on this. I'd expect something like a mini-review like a year down the line or something about how the DLCs panned out, if they were good. Fuck where did this wall of text come from?

One of the problems I have with the game (I’m currently playing through it) is how fast it goes. Not necessarily the gameplay, but cutscenes are very quick and don’t seem to take the chance to flesh out these characters from the original game like Bikke; or even the new Warriors of Light for that matter. A different thought, and I find this really weird too; is that a few years ago I kept wanting and telling my friends that’d I’d love to get two games in particular. I used to say, “I really want an open world game made by Fromsoftware and a souls-like remake of the original Final Fantasy.” Elden Ring came out and so did Stranger of Paradise. Just wanted to add that cause I still don’t believe that I got nearly exactly what I wanted.

You know what I realised with you pointing out that the story follows the general formula of FF1? This is actually a better execution of the idea behind FF7Remake. It's a retelling of the same story but with some self-referential criticism of the tropes from the original: i.e. in reality there is no ultimate evil but in fiction it can be a comforting thing to imagine it that way when you don't have the capacity to get rid of the people in positions of power and authority who reduce your quality of life in order to maintain their own dominance. Pretty much every FF game ends with you killing a big evil boss and the implication here is that it may be cyclical with different zones being representations of the franchise at different points in its history.

To be fair, FF7R isn't done yet, and I like that it's a stealth sequel instead of a retelling with a twist, though I fully understand why that's so controversial.

Exactly, and for the record, FF7 Remake sucked hard compared to this game, especially due to the laughably bad gameplay and forced walking sections. At least Stranger of Paradise remembered that it's a video game and not a movie.

Eyyyyyy, i'm really happy you liked it. I've been seeing some people be, imo, unnecessarily jaded towards this game and i don't why. But i'm very happy to hear you enjoy it too. Good luck with all the moving!

Didn’t enjoy it as much as Nioh 2; but I would totally be down for a sequel. After all; I was lukewarm on Nioh, and Nioh 2 pretty much solidified what made it work.

My thoughts on the gameplay: 1. Momentum is a big factor. When things are going good, you're soul bursting for mana and knocking down enemies -> Using that mana for combo abilities -> Combo'ing to break more enemies for further soul bursts -> etc. Use soul shield to get mana from enemies attacks when needed. 2. Don't worry about picking a job to stick with. The most significant part of a current job is simply the neutral R2 ability which is unique to each job. All the other attacks you unlock for leveling that job will apply to other jobs. The biggest factor in how the combat gameplay will be like is the weapon type you are using. 3. There are SO MANY different stats to look at. Don't bother. While Job Affinity is huge and gives great bonuses, you'll be having to ditch a lot of items to prioritize item level. Note: As long as you're not 5 or more levels below the dungeon level, then you can worry about Job Affinity. 4. Don't underestimate your companions. Put them on the offensive as early and often as you can. 5. The 'same-iness' of the levels is, by far, the worst part of the actual gameplay. I got lost so easily down so many similar looking corridors and tunnels.

Breaker and Sage are just too good. Enemy got a lot of health and does a lot of damage or a major elemental and range weakness and you need them dead ASAP? Just Zantetsuken and Fire/Dia spam into Ultima! Problem solved in under 30 seconds. I swear those three, and to a lesser degree Dark Knight (for the daring boys and girls with high skill) are what they wanted people to use over anything else. They just did the job better than every other Job and class, even though I know they don't technically supersede the others. They're just as good if not better than the final Job.
