Stranger than Fiction - Crime Stories You Couldn't Make Up
News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840
In this month’s history compilation, we look at cases, as voted by the team, from our archives of stories that are strange, remarkable or unforgettable, spanning 1776 -1893.
The stories are in chronological order with a fun aside at the end.
Catherine Hayes: 0:01:43
We start with the incredible story of Catherine Hayes, 1776 who seduced a prosperous farmer’s son for marriage, then started an affair with her own now grown up son as well as a lodger. Her husband’s head ends up on a spike.
Jonathan Balls 22:43:07
From 1846, one of England’s worst serial killers whose motive was whether he took a dislike to you. Everyone, including family, were fair game.
William Sheward 57:38:06
From 1841, Norwich finds itself festooned with various body parts that have been placed around the city. The crime is only solved when the murderer turns himself in 18 years later.
William Dove 01:25:42:28
From 1856, William Dove is dissatisfied with his wife -he is sure he could upgrade to a better model. Luckily for him, he meets a wizard who promises him that his wish will come true. He just needs to sell his soul to the devil and kill his wife.
The Bromsgrove Murderer 2:00:11:02
From 1872, this utterly cruel murder of a wife who has rejected him takes place whilst she is holding their child in her arms.
Margaret Walber 2:05:46:23
From 1893, this case of spousal abuse of a husband involves chaining him in the attic when the wife finds, what she believes to be, proof of his infidelity. Things go from bad to worse then for him.
A Family Day Out at the Morgue 2:33:30:06
A known fun day out for the family was a trip to the morgue to look at the dead bodies in the window. The morgue was surrounded by festive stalls and street food. We take a look at this distinctly Victorian past time.
The News of the Time team voted cases that we feel certain the average film maker would pass on as being too unbelievable is today’s end of month history compilation of Stranger than Fiction cases.
