@@melanie62954 Tough break for the actor who played Lonnie, who was the character originally slated to get the redemptive moment when he returned to the house to help out Jonathan and Nancy in that scene, but I actually really like the fact that they allowed Lonnie to remain an unreconstructed shithead of a Deadbeat Dad. It's very non-'80s -- in an '80s action adventure movie, the Bad Dad would always get redeemed, while the popular jock kid never would -- but its subversion of genre expectations is a big part of why I enjoyed it so much!

@@Diegesis Yea that's why Dustin and some of the kids kinda know it too but I say that because Hopper was military because that is part of his back story that they will talk about later in season 4 I won't tell you exactly what he did or how it plays in because that could be a bit of a spoiler but they will go into a little detail on it later in the 4th season infact you won't truly understand anything in this show until season 4 lol it's quite a Journey I wish they would hurry up with season 5 already lol

I think the detail I love most about this episode is that phone ring. The Duffer brothers are old enough to remember this, but some of the show's younger viewers, like my housemates' kids, aren't. You *always* knew the sound of your own home telephone. My housemates' daughters were so confused by that. They were like "But all phones had the same ring back then, so how would he know?" But they didn't. They didn't. There were subtle differences--something to do with the acoustics of the room it was in, whether it hung on the wall or sat on a surface, how tightly the case was screwed together, and I don't even *know* what else--that made your own home telephone, the one you were most intimately familiar with, sound like no other phone on earth.

I love how you point out the lighting in 5:07 I get so lost in the world I forget how much choices and details come into making a show like this. Yeah. I mean, Bob's a Radio Shack employee, not a professional computer programmer. He knows some BASIC, but it's not actually his job. I like that they picked a task at the appropriate level of difficulty for an interested amateur with a little programming knowledge like Bob to be capable of, while a complete novice like Hopper still wouldn't even know where to begin.

Given the 1980s setting and the other allusions to Vietnam, given ST season 2 themes of cycles of violence and trauma, and given the military bent to his version of toxic authoritarian violence, I think its fair to assume Max and Billy's dad is a traumatized war vet. Which isn't an excuse, of course, but adds character flavor and is an indictment of how downright abandoned multiple generations of vets have been by the systems nominally meant to support them.

They're supposedly "George Lucasing" Will's Birthday from March 22nd to May 22nd since they made an error. Continuity is not the Duffer Brothers strong suit. They had every opportunity to not screw it up but didn't because they don't follow their own dialog.

It shows their inexperience more than anything else IMO. Experienced showrunners usually employee at least one continuity person whose job is to keep an eye out for those sorts of errors. It's a lot like someone else having had to be the one to suggest to them that they contact Paul Reiser's agent or manager to see if they could actually get him for the role they were thinking of as the "Paul Reiser guy." It apparently hadn't occurred to them that they could do such a thing, rather than just vainly fantasizing about how cool it would be if Paul Reiser somehow magically showed up to audition for something so that they could cast him in that part.

It's a sadly tried and true story, nothing really groundbreaking, but having seen Billy and Max almost this whole season now, it just makes you so furious. When S2 first premiered, I didn't know there were 9 episodes in the season. So I thought that last shot of Mike and El looking at each other was the end of season cliffhanger. I recently saw a post that said the tech of _War Games_ was basically accurate for the time, much to my shock, so maybe I have to reset my expectations about the complexity of computer technology before the 90s haha.

@@jerodast ya I'm an electrical/computer engineering student and they teach us starting off with the early computer technology and it's actually crazy how easy it was to hack old technology mostly due to how little encryption there was and how much of a difference going from a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit adds to register complexity sure 2^32 is a large number but it's a comprehensible number still, look at how much 2^64 is and it may help bring into perspective just how much more complex a single register in a modern computer is compared to older computers add onto that the fact that any important data is going to be encrypted in some manner now.

But if Hawkins Lab has had the same system for a while -- which I think is perfectly in keeping with its portrayal -- then an amateur with some knowledge of BASIC very likely could reboot it, just like Bob did. It's one of the reasons that teenaged hackers were such a big issue for a short period in the '80s--and then stopped being. It wasn't that all of those early '80s teenagers were geniuses; it was just that they knew a tiny bit of programming, and that's really all it took for a while back there.

I'm okay with most of this season's story progression, but (SPOILERS) the climax next episode has Elevan making faces and using powers against monsters that are the same faces and same powers against the same monsters she did last season, and it makes it a lot less epic than it wanted to be, IMO.

The thing about Billy’s dad is everything he said was… right? The tone of voice, the physical aggression, calling the girl Billy was going to see a bad name, none of that is okay, obviously. But he was absolutely right: Billy’s an a-hole, he should look after his sister, and he should respect his parents. That’s the worst part of parental abuse: when they’re right and they’re just doing their job, but they’re going about it the wrong way.
