I was stunned honestly. I think all the "kids" are talented, some more than others, but all are talented. I thought Caleb was doing a great job with a character who for the most part wasn't in the more emotional scenes. I didn't know he had that in him. Again, I knew he was talented, but that was the first scene he's had close to that. It being improvised shows he doesn't just have great acting ability, but great dramatic instincts.

One is a serial killer, his thing is breaking their bones and sucking their eyes in. The gates open once the person dies, irrelevant of the way that person has died. She died, so the gate opened. It just so happened that El was able to get her heart working again. Max's soul is probably with One (as he mentions that everyone he kills is still with him in his head), even if her body is still alive.

In regards to why Will hesitant in coming out, one has to look at the historical context. This is 1986, Will is from a small town of Hawkins, Indiana. The family only recently moved to California. Homophobia is real. 1986 was also the peak of AIDS, even gay friendly big cities like New York and San Francisco gay community were facing major backlash on top of dealing with a deadly disease that was ignored by Ronald Reagan administration. Even today kids are being disowned by families for being gay.

I rewatched the whole thing waiting for vol 2 and Steve actually never bullied people - his friend, that later became Billy bff, was the one trash talking, publicly humiliating others. The only Steve did something was break the camera and considering Jonathan was being a stalker weirdo photographing his gf undressing can’t blame the guy. Even when Barb got cut he was the first to check her hand, tell her where first aid was, not even Nancy cared that much. Imo the writers were very deliberate cause we remember Steve being a douche, but when you watch you actually see the character we love today was always there, but with the wrong crowd.

He was right in breaking the camera and being mad about the photos, but he was not in that and deserved to get punched in the face by Johnathon at that moment.

Series that freely maim or kill off the central characters are rare, *especially* in serial shows, for a range of reasons. Not saying they don't have plot armor, it just isn't (to my mind) notably worse than most things I've seen or played. Whether or not that should be the norm is very much a conversation worth having though. The most... egregious isn't the right word, but notable thing so far is Eleven saving Max (or at least her body) but we'll have to wait and see if there's a reasonable explanation/set up for how exactly she did that.

As a person that was a teen and DnD player in the 80's, I assure you the "Satanic Panic" was very real. It was not well known, let alone understood, outside of the demographic that played it. RE: Max's status; remember Brenner said that Henry absorbs everything about a person. It's possible Max's "soul" can be recovered by killing Henry/Vecna.

While he was definitely doing the wrong thing, he really did have good intentions for most part, despite being clearly deranged by the end by grief, anger, and restlessness. He thinks the Hellfire club is linked to Satan (and that Eddie a vessel of Satan), and seeing the deaths that were unfortunately linked to Eddie in one way or another are pretty unexplainable to the non main characters of ST. He also walked in on Lucas just watching Max in a trance, and genuinely tried to snap her out of it, obviously not realizing how to do so. Not to mention the whole DND being linked to Satan was an actual thing in the 80s, so it’s not a stretch to interpret the crazy things that happened to him that way

The entire story last season (3) was all about How Will was never able to go on adventures. he was always just there, a spectator, or even worse, someone to be saved. He never got to adventure. In the episode, she asks a girl for the password and the girl is about to break it down into an acronym for easier recollection, but then we cut to another scene. So because we never saw the girl tell Clara the password, the reviewer absolutely refused to believe that she was given it, and that it was just lazy writing. I unsubbed that person soon after. That type of reviewer is a lazy viewer who can't connect dots.

To what Aaron was saying about 10 hr movie vs. 10 1 hour episodes being binged - The biggest most important difference is that the episodic format gives natural stopping points letting viewers binge for breaks. If it's 10 hours straight, that feels like it requires more commitment.

About Will being gay: imo it was pretty clear in the previous episode (4x8), and I'm sure he's in love with Mike. It was all in the scene with his painting. He said to Mike that "El commissioned it", but it was a lie, it was established in ep. 1 that it was his project and that he kept it hidden from everyone. Jonathan knew that, that's why he catched the lie and listened to the conversation. And all that Will said in that conversation, about Mike being the heart of the group and how El needed him? He was talking about himself. That's why he was crying, he needs more than a hug, he needs for Mike to reciprocate his feelings, but he knows that won't happen. And Jonathan picked on that. That's why here, he not only says to Will "I'm here for you", but also that nothing Will could do or be could make him love him less.

Great reaction, guys! ♡ Regarding discussion, on some things we agree, on others less so. But definitely not on 51:02. Considering Max's struggle with depression and all, I would certainly not feel "satisfied" if this was the absolute end of her arc. I rarely comment but honestly had to say it. Also, I might be in the minority, but I rarely feel like a TV show or a movie needs major character deaths to "have stakes". Character journey doesn't need to end in death for me to care and worry about this character or any other. I was 100% invested here and will continue to be in the next season.

finally, thank you! It would not have been great storytelling if Max died. It would've actually been incredibly tone-deaf and would have meant that everything that was compelling about her story this season was just for shock value. With so many parallels between Vecna's 'kills' and depression/suicidal ideation, for the character we've seen struggle with that all season to succumb to it in the end would just be disturbing in the most unnecessary way.

I feel the same way on both points; staying dead would undermine her entire arc this season and send a message that severely impaired people are better off dead. Imagine if people like Stephen Hawking or Hellen Keller thought that way. Stakes come from more than just death; as long as you put characters' backs against the wall, you create stakes, and sometimes death is correct, but even if it makes logical sense, I would be unsatisfied if people died just for shock value. Eddie is the right way to handle a character's death; you slowly build up to the moment after preparing the audience emotionally and making sure it defines their character arc.

Max dying would've ruined her incredible arc this season and her entire plot in Dear Billy. She's a depressed, grieving kid who has had suicidal thoughts and shut herself off from her friends to hide away, only to jump back into the light through the people who love her. She stands up against those thoughts and decides she wants to live. Dying right after the monster says "she deserves it and it's what she really wants anyways" is not really satisfying writing. It's straight up gross. I don't know why people act like death is the only consequence that matters. She's blind, gone through more trauma, lost her soul, and looks like that the Michelin Man.

Aaron, Max flat out died. She died because of her injuries. Before he fully killed them but he stopped before the eyes they still would have died. Eleven brought her back.

I feel like she died more from shock-induced cardiac arrest than from the injuries directly. Broken limbs and damaged eyes don't kill you. What kills Vecna's victims is the final deathblow where he basically pops their eyes and brain, and Vecna wasn't able to deliver that here. I also don't think El healed Max, she probably just psychically restarted her heart. If she could make a bully pee himself in S1, and if she can snap people's necks with her mind, she can probably pump a person's heart with her mind. Since Max's heart only stopped for a minute, reviving her with CPR would definitely be possible, and there wouldn't be permanent brain damage. So I think El basically did psychic CPR. Max isn't brain dead since she wasn't on a respirator and the doctors said she may or may not wake up, so her mind is probably somehow being held captive by Vecna.

Jesus, this ending was extremely bleak. They were completely defeated. Vecna/001 is still alive (hurt, but alive), Max is grievously injured, blinded and put into a coma, Eddie is dead, half of Hawkins was destroyed by the X-Gate while killing god-knows how many more people, and the fusion between the Upside Down and Our Side has begun. This season was just brutal and harsh. What the hell is Stranger Things 5 going to throw at us?

Covid restrictions added 15-20 million to the bill required, and the duffer brothers said this caused the season to be condensed. 15-20 million could’ve made around 2 more episodes probably. It isn’t fair to compare Season 4 to Game of Thrones for example, which wasn’t filmed during a pandemic. In those circumstances we might’ve seen Mike and Will used more. Netflix even said that Stranger Things was one of the hardest affected shows by covid. Release got delayed by a whole year aswell.

47:33 Max is definitely not brain dead, at least not in the medical sense. When you're brain dead your organs can't function on their own, and you need to be kept artificially alive by machines. You can't breathe on your own if you're brain dead. But Max wasn't on a respirator. And according to Lucas the doctors said they didn't know if she would wake up. Which means there's a chance. If you're brain dead, there's zero chance of ever waking up. And yes, they would be able to tell that in 1986. I believe Max is in some kind of supernatural coma, where her mind is somehow being held captive by Vecna. And I know the Duffers said in an interview that Max was sort of brain dead, but that wasn't what they showed on screen, and it doesn't make sense based on Lucas' dialogue. So my guess is the Duffers were just speaking loosely in that interview. Or they just mean she's in a kind of supernatural brain death. Either that or they have really bad medical consultants on this show.

I think Hopper's non-death made people waaay more hostile toward Max's non-death than is deserved at this point. For one thing, it's at least confirmed Max's not 100% dead in the same episode rather than drawing out the "suspense" between seasons. And it's clearly set up to be a crucial plot point in an ongoing story (Vecna vs Eleven) rather than starting its own thing like Hopper's Russia storyline, where the connection to the upside-down feels just a bit contrived. Obviously idk how well they'll pull off the conclusion, but so far it has potentially interesting implications for not just Max, but for Eleven and Vecna. And I thought it was plausible that Eleven could restart her heart with like a pulse of telekinetic energy, or, if she interrupted Vecna's absorption of Max's "essence" right at the last second (hence why Max still had a minute to talk to Lucas) she might have used her memories of Max to stop her from completely fading away. Either way, it feels like a natural enough progression of her telepathy/telekinesis powers. At worst, it's the genre-typical Deus Ex Machina that the show has done since Hopper brought Will back to life in season 1 (imo a great moment), and that's never bothered me in a show like this as long as the repercussions are compelling. All the questions this sets up are really interesting ones, I guess we'll see whether the answers will be satisfying.

Finally someone who gets the point, I've seen so many people who are like “that was cheap and El has resurrection powers” and I'm just like wait, you all don't understand what telekinesis is and how is coma with broken bones and blindness inconsequential. Even if she wakes up she's not going to be physically the same because El can't heal wounds, that's not within her power. Max's current state is also likely to drive Lucas to kill any monsters he can get his hands on next season. I just keep picturing something like that scene in independence day where Will Smith is kicking the crap out of the alien corpse and dragging it through the desert lol

Really pissed he had to die but I completely get why the writers chose to go that way. His arc was so well done. Quinn was a great choice and addition. Joe Quinn actually playing Master on that guitar in that scene with the exception of the left hand close up is the coolest thing ever. Apparently Hetfield and the gang are huge fans of the show. I read somewhere that the close up hand shot was actually one of their sons playing Master. Epic Best line of the season, “ I piggybacked from a pizza dough freezer”. Friggin classic. I really hope Will will become the prime central focus character again in S5. I can’t help but feel he’s been absent on the show for a few seasons. I think having them all back in Hawkins and hopefully to stay in Hawkins will form a great core for the final season. Didn’t even catch Eddie’s uncle was Enoch from AoS. Nice catch!

i know some people disagree because they wanted a main character to die, but i'm glad they didn't kill max. i don't think killing her off would've sent a good message AT ALL considering she's a kid who's been dealing with s*icidal ideation (+ vecna in vol 1 kind of represented max's ptsd, survivor's guilt and depression) and was just starting to get better at the end of episode 4 and realize there are people who care about her and that she has things to live for. episode 4 ended with such a powerful message. killing her off would send the message that no matter what, no matter how hard you fight, you could never overcome your depression. and that's just a horrible message and overall it very much felt like her journey is far from over and she has just started to accept herself a bit, still has a lot of potential for both the character and her use in the plot next season. (+the duffers said max being in a coma instead of dying is extremely important to the plot of season 5 and not just them "cheating death" so i assume she'll either be a vessel for vecna or play a pivotal role in defeating him, maybe from within his mind)
