I've been rewatching the series to compare it to S3 and I just finished S2 and here are my thoughts. I think that S1 and S2 had a more ominous and sinister atmosphere while the tone felt like a serious drama at heart. The soundtracks in S1 and S2 add to the atmosphere as it had a lot more synth music than S3. S3 does go to really dark and gruesome territory but it's tone feels more like a comedy most of the time. It's definitely more lighthearted. I think the absence of the Hawkins Lab and replacing them with the Russians makes the tone feel a little more cheesy because when Hawkins Lab was involved, it felt like a conspiracy thriller mixed with dark sci-fi as they were conducting inhumane experiments. Hawkins Lab felt like the boogymen while the Russians feel like classic 80's bad guys. Also I felt like S2 did try to expand more on the overall lore while this season really sidelined the Upside Down. I'm hoping S4 brings back Brenner just like everyone is speculating.
@jessec.68765 жыл бұрын
I hope not. Brenner was the most boring villain. I think what made the past 2 seasons more "seriously" was the fact that it was personal for the characters that we care about. In season 1 the characters are trying to save their best friend will. A kid is lost and everyone is looking for him. That's serious. In season 2 we see these characters react to will being possessed by the mind flayer. Its terrifying for them. In season 3 its kind of personal for max but still billy was an asshole so we didn't care as much it also takes more of a comedy route which I'm fine with. I like all 3 seasons what makes the series great IMO is character.
@Domination17995 жыл бұрын
Patrick Bateman I felt like Brenner was a better villain than the Russians. He felt more sinister and had a somewhat understandable motivation. I also feel that the tone is a little weird considering how high the stakes are this season. A lot of people got possessed and died a horrible death compared to S1 and 2. The tone should still be pretty dark. It felt a little like an MCU movie at times, tonal wise anyway.
@jessec.68765 жыл бұрын
@@Domination1799 I got so bored with Brenner I don't remember anything about him except for him standing and making the same facial expression in every scene. I think he had more lines in season 2 than in season 1 honestly. Yeah but those people are just extras to us. Besides billy and the old lady we didn't know any of them and neither did the characters. It was serious in terms of plot but not to the characters which is what the audience really cares about.

@arno victor I actually liked the twist involving Robin. Typical Genre convention would have it so that Steve and Robin end up together, but no, that's not what happens. They managed to get us to know and love Robin first, before revealing that she was gay in the penultimate episode, so that she was a brilliant character who just so happened to be gay, and not vice versa. Steve, for his part, takes it in stride, and they become genuinely close pals after all of their adventures.😊

I agreed. They were boring, maybe because Johnathan had nothing to add other than being the boyfriend and big brother to will. Hopper and Joyce were cringey to watch as well because Hopper is an abusive guy. In season 2 he was constantly yelling at El and now this season with Joyce. No. Just no. The only group I enjoyed was Steve and Dustin group. Their journey to discovered a secret Russian laboratory underneath the mall was fun. Steve and Robin had so much more chemistry then the rest of the cast. Even if Robin is gay they still have chemistry and that's rare. Can't wait to see where this new friendship is going in season 4.
@salamander3375 жыл бұрын
@Anon Well I suppose it's an 80s show and that's how most relationships were back when people weren't realizing how unhealthy that kind of relationship was. Look at Billy's parents before they broke up and what it did to him. The only redeeming quality Hopper has is despite his anger issue he truly does care for those he loves. He just goes about it the wrong way.

Season 3 abandoned what made the earlier seasons so groundbreaking. It was no longer sinister, it didn’t have you at the edge of your seat - and it didn’t feel real. The move from the cold fall to a hot summer kind of took a toll on the entire watching experience. The atmosphere was clear. There wasn’t this dark cloud anymore, and everything felt pushed and rehashed. Other than some of those insightful scenes with Billy & bits/pieces of Nancy’s and Jonathan’s reporter arc. This season felt flat, dry and expected. Definitely the worst out of the 3. What a bummer!

I kept telling my friends I wish they'd axed the entire Russian plot. Not the fact that the Russians are causing the gate to open again. We need that for the story. But the whole cracking the code and infiltrating the base subplot. Completely unnecessary, tonally inconsistent and just BORING. Are the Russians supposed to be a serious threat? They somehow managed to create a MASSIVE underground base underneath an American town, which is crazy. Or are the Russians supposed to be bumbling idiots? They can't capture or secure a couple of kids who managed to infiltrate their massive base. And what was the point of the secret coded message? There is an entire army of Russians underground AND quite a few of their agents above ground guarding the mall... they seem to have NO trouble getting in and out of their secret massive underground complex. So what was the point of BROADCASTING the location of their base via coded message? Oh right, so the kids can crack and and infiltrate it. That's a perfect crystallization ofthe main problem of the season: they wanted something to happen in the story and they didn't care that what caused that something is completely nonsensical.

Season 2, best horror elements!? Not by a long shot... I wasn't the biggest fan of S3, but I feel that's where it really shines, the updated horror elements. Like, first scene we see everyone get electrocuted, and when that dude's face got ripped off I knew we were in for a more gruesome style. Like, some of the stuff they got away with here was pretty awesome for a tv-14. Seeing rats blow up was like, okay, but when they started showing *_people_* melting down into piles of sentient flesh I was pleasantly surprised that they just showed it, instead of implying it offscreen. Really wasn't a fan of the 'well I'm yelling so I'm funny' aspect of this season, but it appreciated that it remembered it was a *horror* show as well, I feel like S2 had forgotten. Also, there was some tonal clashing...like the writing was a lot more immature, but it had more mature moments, i.e.- Billy dropping an f bomb, which they're allowed to do a couple times per episode in tv-14, they just don't... (figured that out when I watched Luther), so Billy cussing and 11 getting her leg cut open, stuff like that. I thought the design of the monster was pretty good too... I'm glad they didn't try to make it city-sized like in Will's vision, but even with the more measured size I wasn't sure if we had seen it consume enough flesh to even be _that_ big, ya know? Oh well, sorry for the essay, I really didn't mean to do that, I have ADD and once I get going it's sometimes hard to stop (case in point). Just wanted to say I disagreed about season 2 and this is why...if you actually read all this I sincerely thank you for giving me the time and I'm open to conversation. Peace!

Taking away believability is a sad thing. Great review. I still enjoyed this season, but I won't watch it again and it's easily the weakest of the three. What I think really broke Season 3 for me was their introducing this Russian military sect as an antagonist and then making a complete cartoon out of them. These guys like just appear under the mall with guns and a super-laser-beam and guard patrols, and the Scoop Troop out-navigate them like it's a freaking Scooby-Doo episode. Even when the kids are finally discovered, the Russians just pull out guns and start acting like minion waves in a first-person shooter, not like actual people who need to maintain cover in a small-time American town. It just got harder and harder to believe. All of the Russians were just really dumb where they needed to be smart. Because in the end, they had to be at a threat level that a ten-year-old could handle. *headache*
@AndresGomez-ct7qb5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, same for me. And it seemed like they thought Erica pointing out how insane it was to take on armed Russians made it okay. I seriously thought it was all going to end much tragically, but the fact the Russians didn't just kill 'em all is such a contrivance. And it seemed like the entire season everything fell into place, but in a forced way. Nancy didn't do any research, an old lady called her and it just happened to be the case. With Joyce she from fridge magnets she just guesses that she needs to go to the science teacher and he just guesses the conspiracy and they just happen to run into the terminator guy just like that, and they don't even do any detective work just "Oh, he had a motorcycle. Only one person has one of those." and that's enough of a guess to assault the mayor, and then they just waltz into the hideout - and hopper brings joyce instead of more cops... At least Steve, Dustin & Robin wrecked their brains trying to figure the code out, everything else just fell into place in such a corny way. But it made no sense for them to casually venture into the hideout under the mall, blind instead of trying to escape somehow, although it made no sense they didn't shy away from going after armed guards, but hey, it was stupid to have armed guards there to begin with when the COVER is meant to be just mall employees, of course they'd be carrying around military grade weapons to give themselves away. I seriously don't think anyone that thinks this season is great hasn't turned off their brains. And the biggest praise anyone has is "The mall was awesome". And even the dialogue had every cliche in the book, "We've had a long day so please interrogate our friend god damn it"

Not just the russians, EVERY BAD GUY THIS SEASON COULD HAVE WON EASILY, BUT ALWAYS HESITATED Billy could've killed the kids many times, the russians should've shot and killed Robin and Steve as soon as they caught them. Or had guards and surveillance cameras on every entrance, if they can afford all this shit they can afford security cameras in the 80s. The Mind fart or whatever its called should've split up or grown some eyes, like its invincible but its not strong enough to rip off a 15 yo girls leg by bite force or collapse the cabin they're trapped in. Or just go in through the cracks and kill them all by sufficating them. OR infect the other kids and pick them off 1 by 1. It went through all that trouble of growing a billion teeth and it never even uses them on people slowly stabbing (you know) wit its legs instead of biting him and 11s heads off. Like all of the dangerous scenarios that the bad guys obviously won if they were actually as vicious as they were written as were just all deus ex machinad by a 11 mcguffin or shark jump. I'm not even completely through the season and I think it felt teen drama-y and comedic early on. I think Hopper, conflicted, dealing with his daughter's death by overprotecting El, who gave that talk about feeling like a black hole that sucks things in, now he's goofy overprotective dad yelling at his daughter's boyfriend. I think similar with Mike, Max and El, and to I think a lesser extent Nancy. I think they took out some of the more dramatic stories of their characters dealing with trauma and pain. Now I think they're trying to push teen relationship issues.

Once you let that ending die down, you'll notice the flaws. It did have bigger flaws than before. It did reconcile a lot of the flaws in season 2 but it still had flaws of it's own. #1) Maxine was annoying as hell. It was good she was giving advice but she was antagonizing mike more than she needed to. #2) I get Mike wanted to protect El, but it is so unlike him to restrict El and provide rules. #3) Although season 1 had some commentary on tropes, j felt season 3 fully embraced the tropes to the point that I couldn't take the story seriously on some points. The Soviet Russian secret base looked like a spy movie. Joyce and Hopper were the weirdest part and they argued in such a childish way after all that theyve been through they actually devolved in this season. #4) I like Steve and Robin as friends. But come on, steve has been on one big roller coaster this entire season. I hope season 4 he finds true love.

A victim of it's own success perhaps? This season has been such an 'essential' reference point of late it's been impossible to ignore. From being used in product tie-ins and Netflix ads, this is their flagship show right now and 80's nostalgia is trendy again. I feel the writers, given a bigger budget and more expectations, have tried to deliver content over quality. Each character has to be doing something all the time in this season. Someone is being shot at, we jump to someone else running away from some dangerous thing, then yet another storyline in its own 5 minute segment and confusingly similar peril. I lost count of how many times someone had been in life-threatening danger, show no affer-effects and dive straight into another hare-brained quest. It was like Scooby Doo with a dose of cold war era action film. But the improbable ones where the storyline wasn't as important as the next action scene. Too much happens on screen at once and, whilst it's a homage to those charming 80's films, the action is cartoonish and there's not as much time to enjoy the characters, which used to be the heart of the show.
@charismer1005 жыл бұрын
It was ironic they called Nancy "Nancy Drew". This season reminded me of reading my fourth or fifth Nancy Drew novel as a child (or watching Scooby Doo). "Oooooh, these are all just the same thing over and over with new backgrounds and a new villain." Hopper is awkward and needs help socially but then kicks ass when the fighting starts. Joyce sees the mystery first and keeps trying to figure it out even when everyone tells her to calm down. Will looks scared. Jonathan has to deal with a woman pushing him to investigate something fishy. Nancy uses a gun. Conspiracy dude gets the fighting couple to see they're in love. Steve has an unrequited love. El still talks like she's been kept in a hole. Wrist rocket. Walkie talkies. Eggos. Anything new was pandering (Neverending Story), lazy writing (the cartoonish feel everyone keeps talking about), or oddly agenda driven. Hated this season.

@@dexter2178 I feel like this season had plot armor, too. The mind flayer had spikes and teeth, but smacks people around most of the time. Despite its giant form it only sent skinny tentacle things inside of Hopper's house instead of crushing it with one of its arms. Also, it sends only one or two, maybe three at a time at the house with Eleven inside while Billy dies by like six at once. When Mike, El, and Max were hiding in a store, one of the tentacles snapped around a corner quickly even though the characters weren't there. When they were, it moves at the speed of a dying turtle. People get choked like crazy when they could have been killed instantly. The monster in the hospital slowly walks to Nancy after chasing her like a bull and roars in her face instead of killing her. Hopper could've been killed by the Russian assassin in the first encounter but doesn't get killed (maybe because Joyce comes, but he kills people in public anyway). I knew characters would only die towards the end.

I knew I was in trouble as soon as I saw Steve scooping ice cream at the mall-- and the way he reacted to Dustin showing up.This is the same Steve Harrington we saw in Season 1???
@gLeeksFF5 жыл бұрын
My problem was that there were too many characters that had basically nothing to do aside from screaming and running away from things 2) some characters were like caricatures of themselves. Biggest offender Hopper . My favourite character along with Steve for the past 2 seasons but he was written like trash this season . Non stop angry and bickering with Joyce (the most unenjoyable aspects of the season). His character annoyed me so much that his sacrifice at the end touched nothing with me 3) In terms of the overarching plot of the series I feel like we've gotten nowhere. No idea what is the upside down and what the creatures from there are. No idea why it's happening in Hawkins. All that's happened in the past 3 seasons is people running away from things and eleven killing stuff . This was great for the past 2 seasons but the rinse and repeat formula is getting tiresome It was a good season. Mother hen Steve and his kids saved it
@LonexCyborg5 жыл бұрын
I have the same problem, there needs to be more focus on the lore of the monsters and the world. What's the purpose of the upside down, why does it exist, why do they appear only at Hawkins? Now with the introduction of the Russians, how do they know of the upside down, and for what purpose do they want to open the door to the upside down. I know that the creators want to utilize 80s lore but they also have to expand on the supernatural elements.
