Easily, he's an actual character and had actual dialogue compared to the past villains. They finally fixed one of my issues in this show the lack of actual memorable villains. Mind Flayer was cool don't get me wrong but was he really interesting? though maybe they went too far with Vecna's backstory like how he sees humans etc my favorite type of villain is that they have no reason but nonethless Vecna is still an awesome villain, has a god complex.

I have a theory when Hopper goes back to Hawkins he is going to get possessed because 1.He is close to El 2.This season really focused on his trauma...the duffers might've wrote that in specifically this season because of the trauma-theme

This is the best season so far. It managed to pull off everything in a teenage drama , nostalgia, romance , horror, thrills, emotions of having good friends. And it accomplished that without overdoing anything. Bravo, to the creators of the show.

So I had pretty much figured out almost everything before episode 7, but 001 being Victor's son was the part that really surprised me. The way they layered the story this season was so freaking good. Can't wait to see how things play out in July.

Totally agree, after Season 3 I was disappointed and didn't expect much for the next season but so far I'm pleasantly surprised depending on how this plays out this might take the trophy for the 2nd best season in the show.

I think Vecna's weakness is Love. When Max was stuck, it was loving memories that helped her break free. He uses sad and angry memories for his powers and he told Eleven to do the same. But in their fight, she was about to die when she had a flash of her mother saying she loves her. Then with the strength of that memory she was able to banish 001. Anger may work as a source of power (Like how Kali taught Eleven in S2) But perhaps this is Eleven learning that Love provides far more strength than anger and sadness.

The key to every fight with the villains in the show can technically all be good memories from the past that made the characters feel happy because it’s the same thing with billy he was able to leave the mind flayers control because of the past memories eleven had brought up

Seems to me Vecna's intentions were to break the line between the Upside Down and our world and get into the real one. Obviously he couldnt get in by himself, so he uses loopholes - depressed people in borderline state, who are experiencing some kind of trauma, it's much easier for him to get to them. Remember, after every murder how portals and gates to the parallel world appear. Music in this sense is kind of Ariadne's thread connecting people with the real world and preventing them from plunging into darkness and becoming easy prey. So when Maxine heard the music, it allowed her to remember good memories with her friends and Lucas, she managed to get out of Vecna's tenacious clutches and even fight back.

Vecna is the best villain of the show so far. The fact that he was human once makes it all the more scarier and creepier. Hats off to the actor because Jamie was absolutely brilliant! The subtle hints and the way all was peeled away was so good. Plus I think its him only in Vecna's costume and that is serious dedication. 🙌

Feel like the mind flayer was a little downgrade from the demogorgon, considering dnds demogorgon is actually a demon prince that is easily stronger then an army of mind flayers. Vecna is great so far

The fact that he is human makes him more emotional and therefore more likely to be hit by his opponent. He is overwhelmed by desires for revenge and he is also very arrogant because he thinks that nothing can resist him. It's his arrogance that made him show Nancy his past because he thinks that doing so won't change anything, whereas precisely these are the elements that will be used to defeat him. He kept his human character traits, and it will be his achilles talent once again. I really hope the series stays as Dustin advocates of the Mind Flayer as the entity ruling the Upside Down. I would be much more afraid of such a creature that doesn't have emotions or really feel things like we humans. A creature that just feels the need to expand to other dimensions like a virus. This kind of creature scares me much more than a human who has become a monster but still retains most of his emotions..

There absolutely were subtle hints. For example, my mom noticed that in the flashbacks they showed of the massacre earlier in the season, the eyes were gouged out similarly to Vecna's victims.

Did anyone notice how the "shattering" of 001 at the end of the ST season 4 finale is a callback to the demogorgon's defeat by Eleven's hands in ST season 1 finale? It was a nice detail.

@@brandonreed09 @blairmountainnetwork I think the reason the 2nd gate created during her encounter with the demogorgon would be larger because Vecna has been waiting for his opportunity to come back, which then mirrored Hawkins. That had to of taken a huge amount of energy to mirror Hawkins like that. This is compared to the smallest gate El created when she first banished him into the upside down dimension.

i think that one helped kali escape before eleven. i think he tried to do what he did with eleven to kali, giving her advice and helping her with an escape plan because they have similar powers. kali didn't end up taking the power dimming device out of his neck the way he wanted so he tried again with eleven because she was being bullied in the facility and he knew he could manipulate her into giving him his powers back by helping her out of that situation. kali and one give eleven the same advice for making her powers stronger, kali probably got that advice from one when she was still in the lab. idk just my thoughts after watching the season

And she also told El that Brenner shouldn’t be trusted ever again... so that’s why I was confused why El trusted him after Kali told her never to trust him again in ep8 in s2 She even remembered the memory of her and Kali in the rainbow room when they were just little kids when her mom came to rescue her... I don't know I hope they just don't forget all that stuff

Something I did notice is that the Mind Flayer is very spider-like. What if he created the Mind Flayer to be the perfect life form to rule over humans once the upside down invaded our world? Maybe there's many of them in the upside down.

This season made it clear that The mind flayer precede Vecna, meaning the upside down has been around for centuries . I think vecna is like a commander/sergent in the upside down. While the mind flayer is the leader. When 001 get sent to the upside down you can see that it wasn’t created by him, and it looks like he is being puppeteer via the tentacles by the hive mind.

Would you not suggest that the weird sky and lightning etc that is on screen when 001 is floating is there simply because the upside down is being created? Hence why he just floats and doesn’t exactly land anywhere for a while. Also to back this… the fact that when Nancy visits her home to find weapons that aren’t there… they aren’t there because the upside down is only an exact copy of the real world from when it was first opened. Not a continuously changing world. (Ie - if the kitchen table was red when the gate opened in 83… if it was then painted yellow in 85… in the upside down it’s still red)

A theory, Vecna is using the therapist in the school to possess teen's minds. Note the therapist wears the grandfather clock necklace. Both Chrissy and Max visit the therapist and tell her their traumas

Veknas weakness as cheesy as it sounds will be the power of love. This is demonstrated twice in the show. Once during what you said where max and victor are able to survive because they were listening to their favorite song. The other instance is when 11 is able to defeat him as 1 by thinking of her mother instead of the anger and sadness 1 feels

perhaps not love, but joy. I doubt Max loves her favorite song the way she loves her mother. Vecna/one gets his strength from sad, angry memories, so the opposite being his weakness makes sense.

I think music is a red herring in a sense...I think it's positivity, happiness, love etc. The upside down is devoid of all of that. The music was just a trigger, another thing that brought joy. Vecna never went after anyway happy or wasn't being emotionally damaged.

Its not love but its the minds reaction to those memories and songs associated with them that gives people the power surge to overcome Vecnas control. They mentioned that the reason both Victor and Max were able to use music was because they have have comfort and good memories associated with them and that if affects a part of the mind that allows them to keep out Vecna.

We also know that Vecna can’t feel or understand love. That’s why max flashbacks were strong enough to get out and Eleven when she saw the flash back of her mom saying “ I love you” I believe they’re all going to defeat vecna with the power of strong memories and love.

It is by far the best season with the visuals and writing. I loved how everything connected in the end and Eleven's backstory feels well devised and thought-out. Episode 4 was amazing with Max and Vecna's showdown (best scene of vol1). 001 is the best villain by far and a fully fleshed character, his reveal is also great. Now for bad things - I felt that Hopper's Russian storyline was stretched and could've been wraped up earlier so that we could focus more on Hawkins. The California storyline (with Mike, Will and Jonathan) is not great as the characters didn't develop much...Will and Mike have literally no purpose in this season(and the whole Will coming out subtly to the viewers is just bland, Will is either a boy stuck in upside down or the boy who's in love w his best friend, Will NEEDS to have a better arc other than these things which are being used to define him). We had 4 storylines (Hawkins gang, California gang, Russia/Hopper & Eleven-Revival) but out of these, only two felt well put and others lacked. And whys Steve's character regressing backwards with the whole Nancy thing... wasn't that sought out in Season 3? Overall, Max shined the most in Volume 1 & Will felt most bland.

My sister noticed Henry's behavior when they came into the home, and I thought it was odd they said he was in a coma before he died, because that was inconsistent with what we know of how Vecna murders people. We figured the guy in the lab was 001, and we always thought 001 was the monster, but we couldn't figure out HOW the orderly could be Vecna. We did not figure out that Henry was 001. I was glad to see the origin of Vecna explained.

The whole plot for this season was just freaking genius. The way everything comes together in that episode and we get to really see everything goes back to and started with vends (001) and 11 before she even met the group. OKAY, this season got me screaming at the TV. I just have to say that I think… - Vecna started attacking Hawkins bc Eleven isn’t there. I feel that he fears Eleven and that’s why he waited until she was gone. - Everyone is confused about the mind flayer. I think that Vecna is in control of the upside down and he uses different species as his different soldiers. Demagorgon was too weak. He moved onto the Mind Flayer that was in the shape of a spider (hence he created the mind flayer bc he loves spiders). He is the leader. - Max/ Sadie Sink did an AMAZING job this season. Hands down my fav character for S3 & S4. - I am kinda bummed at the cliff hangers for Mike & Will’s crew & Russia. I feel like they could’ve left us at a better place. - I think that Nancy & Steve will be stuck in the upside down in S4 P2, given that Nancy was in a trance and Vecna saw her. I believe they will fight him and Eleven will find a way there to help them.

When we see One in the upside down. It looks nothing like Hawkins. It’s just a red void with some formations. I think it only became like Hawkins when Eleven opened the mother gate at the beginning of season 1. Since the Hawkins in the upside down is stuck in that year. Notice the gate that eleven opens to send One to the upside down heals so there is no way for the two world to influence each other yet.

When Henry is talking about the nature of humans and how they create imbalance nature, some brilliant person put in the ending song from the 1982 film Koyaanisqatsi directed by Godfrey Reggio composed by Phillip Glass. Ko.yaa.nis.qatsi (from the Hopi language), n. 1. Crazy life. 2. Life in turmoil. 3. Life disintegrating. 4. Life out of balance. 5. A state of life that calls for another way of living. This is the entire focus of the experimental movie mentioned above and the poignancy of this peaks in the ending scene of the rocket Saturn V burning and exploding during launch while the theme (which plays during Vecna's monologue) plays. This will probably only be caught by such a small amount of people that including made it even more to the point. It hit HARD when I recognized it in the scene.

I had a thought, “why didn’t the mind flayre use him before” and I thought of an answer. The demogorgon. He was bringing humans from our world. Not to eat, to use as demo eggs and fuel for vecna. When the flayre found vecna he was week and needed to get stronger, when the gate opened it sent the demogorgon to kill people, at which point a gate would be made, so maybe his power was limited to making gates and we all thought making gates is a demogorgon power. Its not a demogorgon power as we see that the demogorgon in season 4 would have made one to get out the prison, so when it kills someone vecna can use them to make a gate in season 1 this gate allows the demogorgon to hide and travel safely. In extreme panic vecna or the mind flayre could yank the demogorgon back to the upside down. When the demogorgon wanted to go back vecna would build its temp portal using the bodies it gathered and it’s connection to the main gate. Season 2, with a firm grasp on the world the mind flayre makes demodogs and goes underground to speed up the process, more deaths, bigger gate, more gates. Season 3, he’s cut off from the world. Still not strong enough to make gates from the upside down. The mind flayre goes on an 11 hunt as the main priority cause duh, she can kill demogorgons and close gates. but the Russians get a demogorgon… Season 4. The Russians feed it, giving vecna more and more people, making him more and more stronger and then a year and a half later of dead people… boom. Hes strong enough to make a gate where ever he chooses from the comfort of his home able to make connections again to our world.

Here's a thought: Heads up this'll be a bit rambly. We know that the Upside Down effectively acts as a parallel dimension to ours, a dark mirror to our world. We also know that One, or Vecna, was sent into the Upside Down in 1979, some four years before El opened the stable gate in Hawkins Lab in 1983. We also know that the first Demagorgon was unleashed as a result, and it began killing random members of the town. We know that the Mind Flayer was integrating itself underneath Hawkins for another year, presumably to take over the world, we know that it targeted El using the Flayed and we know that despite the actual gate being closed, the fabric of reality between the Upside Down and Hawkins is incredibly weak. So, I just recapped four seasons worth of revelations, what does it all mean? To put it bluntly, the very first known human to travel to the Upside Down was One, who despite being scarred and mutilated, managed to stay alive in what can only be described as hell for seven years. At first, I thought he was flayed, but that hardly makes sense. Yes, the Mind Flayer did, once hijack a mind probe from Eleven, enter her mind as she investigated Billy's. But when it, or rather they, did, the Mind Flayer referred to itself as "we", which directly contrasts with Vecna's extremely individualist attitude. Meaning that Vecna wasn't killed or controlled in the Upside Down, but rather, he was contained. And then I got to thinking: what if that was the point? When El threw Vecna into the Upside Down, it was clear that was the first time that level of power had been used, beyond even Vecna's power. And in doing so El separated Vecna from the humanity, the very race he wished to destroy, and by extension separated him from the means of attaining more power. And he so happens to wind up in a dimension overflowing with both insanely strong mindless beasts and a hive mind with psychic abilities to surpass his own? In the show, Dustin said that the Demagorgon were foot soldiers, the Mind Flayer their leader, and Vecna would be the Flayer's right hand. I would like to suggest a different dynamic. The Demagorgon are the guards, The Flayer is the Warden, and Vecna is their prisoner. The reason why the first Demagorgon was killing so often was because it was told to eliminate all life within psychic distance of the gate, which is also why the Mind Flayer didn't stretch beyond Hawkins. And it wasn't just sheer rage and being pissed-off at this kid interfering with it's job that drove the Mind Flayer to try to kill Eleven, they were doing everything they could to prevent Vecna from psychically killing her and taking her power. This whole time, we've assumed the creatures of the Upside Down are evil, when there is a very real possibility that they aren't. Now wouldn't that be a twist?

Personally my take is the "upside down" has always existed and the mind flayer is some sort of cosmic entity that resides in that realm. I think once EL banished 001 there the mind flayer became aware of our world if it wasn't already. Now I don't think the upside down resembled Hawkins until EL opened up the first mother gate, I think having a continuously open portal is what caused the upside down to replicate our world, otherwise it probably would just be like what it looked like when 001 was banished. I think the Mind Flayer purposely saved 001 and turned him into Vecna and joined him into their hive mind one because he's psychic and would be useful especially since he can open up portals between the two worlds. From what Dustin says Vecna serves the Mind Flayer like a general, I can imagine he wants to enact revenge on EL for banishing him along with his plan to reshape earth to how he sees fit. I am curious how the final show down will go down in season 5 between EL and the Mind Flayer. I'm thinking if Vecna kills enough people and puts them on those pillars they will be able to launch an assault on the the real world.

Yes I 100% agree with this! I don't believe this random child with psychic abilities and an unfortunate evil mind is the explanation for the upside down or alternative dimensions. Because Dustin also said this dimension existed "before the dinosaurs". So maybe One himself was even cursed by something somehow which created these abilities.. 🤔 But I do believe Eleven may have stronger powers than One because she was ultimately the one who opened the gate, not One. Who knows one day Eleven and One could work together to destroy the Upside Down and Mind Flayer if One can harness and control his anger.... 🤔 - Side note: I thought One passed Eleven an Ace card under the table. Which would reveal himself as One and she is Eleven, which also makes them equal 👏👏👏 but nope it was key card 🤣

The Hawkins lab massacre had some great clues! A big clue that Vecna was involved was how many of the lab victims looked grotesquely contorted (just like the cheerleader would be in episode 1 and the kid reporter would be in episode 2). Also you can clearly see the recently created (and immediately sealed) Upside Down crack in the wall right behind Young Eleven (visible in the ‘what have you done’ scene right at the end of the massacre).

I love Jamie Campbell Bower! I was excited for him to join the cast. I had a feeling that he was #1, and after a few flashbacks, I assumed he was the cause of the massacre....but I was really shocked when I found out that one/henry creel/vecna were the same person!!!

One thing that remains unanswered by this volume which I'm sure holds some significance is the fact that upside-down Hawkins is stuck in the same time moment as when El opened the gate in the first season and Will was taken into the upside-down. Also, the aesthetics of the upside down and of the version of the Kreel House Vecna's victims end up in seem different. I feel like the Kreel House Nancy and Max ended up in are actually a separate world that El originally pushed 001 into after the massacre and that the Upside-down Hawkins was created when El opened the gate in Season 1. One thing to note is that Nancy became Vecna's victim while she was still in the upside-down, which means that her presence in the Kreel House must exist in another dimension, a dimension separate from the upside-down Hawkins as well. Finally, one other burning question I have is the lights and the way the gang contacted Dustin and co. from the upside-down. The use of light, the nice ticklish feeling they get when they interact with it, it is indicative of something more. Something interesting - perhaps a part of El that lives in the upside-down Hawkins she created in Season 1, a part of El that wants to help anyone from actual Hawkins if they end up in the Upside-down.

My theory is that the upside down has many temporal planes, that or so we heard Vecna has the ability to create links through time and space to individuals, it could be likely that he only habits one version ans doesn't exist past that.
