I'm a roofer and I have told many customers, usually with kids, to place a bucket with a magnetic under their gutter drain pipe and run the garden hose in the gutters and let the gutter clear out with the waste in to the pipe and let the bucket catch everything, then run the magnetic around the bottom of the bucket and then have a look at what's stuck to your magnetic.. bam! Anything that stuck to the magnetic is likely meteorites 😉 Edit: you can also hose down the gables in to the gutters and that will increase your chances of getting a decent sized meteorite. Scotty I'd love it if you gave my process a try and let me know via a video 😁 Edit #2: 1st sorry about all the edits, but I am typing as I watch lol But being that I own a roofing company I have also used my magnetic sweeper and dragged it through a field and found some larger ones. The sweeper can be bought at Harbor Freight in the USA and Princess Auto in Canada for under $40 usd Edit #3 lol got to the end and you mentioned the gutters on house roofs lol

Awesome work, Scotty! Loved that you were able to confirm your find with the SEM and X-Ray spectroscopy! I’ve wanted to make a video about micrometeorites for some time now but have had trouble with being uncertain about the process and poor equipment (I’ve read Larsen’s books, but still have questions, and probably will continue to have questions until I find my first specimen). Kudos to you for these great finds and a great video about the topic 😄
@strangerparts3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, definitely give it a try. Having the SEM was a real luxury, but you should be able to find one with patience, a few simple tools, and even a relatively inexpensive microscope (though a stereo dissection microscope will make it easier). I found a lot of things I thought might be a meteorite. That is, until I actually found one. Then it was pretty obvious!

Cool technique! I visited Meteor Crater in Arizona several years ago. The guide explains that most of the meteorite was liquified by the heat of the fall and impact, and sprayed out of the crater along with the huge masses of stone and earth. So standing on the rim, you can run a magnet along the ground and pick up lots of small bits of meteor material. It's an amazing place, if you ever get the chance to visit. About three quarters of a mile diameter.

@AppliedProcrastination3 жыл бұрын
Larger specimen exist, but they are much rarer. Additionally there is a lot more magnetic terrestrial dust in segments above 400um making the extraterrestrial dust harder to identify. The process developed by Jon Larsen is designed to increase the signal to noise ratio and make it easier to find these tiny, extremely rare, stones (signal) in the midst of all sorts of “uninteresting” terrestrial dust (noise). So by narrowing down the granule size of your sample you basically increase your own odds and perhaps also save your sanity 😅

I got this tip myself, so I'll pass it on: If you want a lot more freedom and easy adjustment when working with your microscope, Aven Tools make 27 and 32mm microscope arbors to _VESA mount_ adapters. They're like $100. Add a really sturdy, wide motion monitor gas arm, mount your microscope on there. Then you'll have huugely more freedom of the work surface and use of the microscope. If you're doing a bit of work that doesn't need the microscope, you can just lift and swing it away. And within reason, you can swing it in over something within a much larger work area, without needing to move whatever it is you're working on. It's also really handy when looking at stuff that varies a lot in height - you can just lift the microscope head up 10, 20, 30 cm if you need, with one quick and light little hand motion. Only important thing of note: don't go _too_ heavy duty on the monitor arm. You want it to be solid for stability when far extended, but not have such strong lift that the microscope head weight is way below the minimum weight rating. Because then it'll keep lifting it up when you don't want it to.

It's weird, it's in the shot for 3 frames, then disappears for one, and then is back visible in 2 more frames. Maybe rolling shutter is why it "disappears" for a frame? A few frames later, there's some white things coming off the roof too - maybe it's a photo shopped easter egg to see who's paying attention. Or, I'm not saying it's Aliens, but it's Aliens!
