How do you know that it isn't just an iron inclusion in the material? You don't. So don't get too excited there. More likely terrestrial from the embedded material.

I worked in a metrology lab so I’m experienced in using blue light scanners (structured light scanners). Anything that is reflective and or shinny will result in poor resolution and or error in the point cloud. What we do to mitigate this is to use a talc based spray. This is a very fine white powder that gets sprayed onto the part and gives it a Matte white finish. It’s specifically made for 3d scanning and the spray thickness is thinner than the uncertainty of the device you are using. Thus not an issue. This will allow you to achieve a better result in your blue light scan.

Shout out to fellow vim lovers :D I use Emacs these days but I use vim almost daily for one reason or another. I've always fancied being able to do 3d printing & scanning, its amazing how far scanning technologies have come in the past 10 years. I am still in awe at my robot vacuum cleaner's lidar sensor, and that's more or less old news these days!

Just thought I'd let you know; I almost unsubscribed from your channel due to this video, rather one specific moment within. At one point you finished scanning Ambrose and the image cuts to the laptop screen and in the background, a treat was cast aside that had been earned and no longer belonged to you. Meanwhile off-screen, I could all but hear the heartbreaking howl of a good boy in anguish. If my hands had not been preoccupied with my pizza rolls and Mountain Dew I might have reached the button Before you managed to award your handsome assistant! Good vid btw, the Raptor is a hell of a lot more impressive than my Creality Scan Ferret. I was pretty disappointed with that thing. Maybe I'll save up the money in hopes of dropping out of the self-taught CAD degree I have been begrudgingly pursuing. My teacher is the real problem there though, he doesn't know shit all about CAD OR teaching. He also talks to himself...

You should take a look at AliceVision Meshroom. It can translate a bunch of images into a mech, much like the Creality Scanner. Meshroom is free, but it requires a Nvidia GPU running Windows or Linux. Not sure if it has the resolution for small things like a iPhone case, but with a good camera and a well lit object it might work :)

Hi! I work as a surface modeler in the aerospace and automotive industries for the last 15 years, and do a ton of RE work with laser scanned data. In fact, at this very moment, I'm taking a break from surfacing a full airframe from laser scanned data. I've done everything from little tiny stuff the size of an iPhone, custom car bodies, all the way up to a Boeing 777. At one point I even owned some Creaform gear, but realized that my time was better spent doing the modeling vs doing the scanning. I can tell you that the issues you're having with the iPhone body scan are endemic to these lower end scanners. This scanner is basically on par with a Creaform scanner from ~15 years ago, at 10% the cost. So while the cost of entry in 2024 is great, a ~15 year old Creaform unit is nothing to write home about in 2024. While it's SUPER fun to play with these things, what I've found is that at the very low end of the market, your money is always better spent hiring a qualified scanning vendor. I work with a vendor in LA on all my projects, and in 15 years they've done nothing but deliver utterly flawless results. Having them scan the iPhone case is something that's likely in the low 100's of dollars. If you're interested, I could ping them and see if they would be willing to scan the iPhone case. It might be an interesting video subject - low end scanner vs state of the art. Cost of ownership vs. cost of hiring out the job. Holler if you're interested!

Scotty, this was incredible timing! I've been looking into the Creality Otter 3D scanner (which makes the same accuracy claims???) based on a series of videos from channel 3D Revolution (great channel, btw). From this video, though, I'm beginning to wonder if I should hold off on buying it. I saw your conversation in the comments with Makers Muse and saw the price of conversion software was ridiculous. I'd love to see your process with this tech in the future.

get a lazy susan and put a motor on it and gearing to make it turn really slow, then tripod mount the scanner, you now have a badass scanner easy to use, thank me later do eet nauw
@Funnyboy2402Ай бұрын
I was here to say the same. A lazy suzan with the dots on and the turn really slow. And a tripod i 3-5 different levels to get all the points on the scanning. And maybe also try play a little with some lighting/shadown on the pic your scanning. Maybe the scanner dosnt like to much light or need an even coat of light to make a better scan.

@@CommanderBeefDev Yes i know. But if the lighting in the studio is to bright or have the same color i thing it can desturb the scanner so it dosnt pick up everything. At least its something to test out. I dont think it will take long time to figure out if external lighting have any effect or not.

there's that 3d scanning spray that creates a matt finish, it evaporates after a short time.
@msnremea1Ай бұрын
one thing that can be seen pretty well in your video is that in areas, where your scan ends, creality scan adds edges everywhere (where there are none). no idea why it does it. these edges appear after optimization and are now present in the raw point cloud. this makes merging different scan sides moe work than it has to be because all the edges, that the software created out of thin air, need to be removed before merging. not sure if you have done that.
@strangerpartsАй бұрын
Yeah - I've experienced that, along with halos around the markers. I'm going to reach out to tech support at Creality about it - it's very strange.

If I understand correctly there are also temporary coatings coatings that can be applied to objects to help cut down on the reflections? Not sure if that helps in the blue light mode, or if it's just for IR 🤔 I know it from LTT and their 3d scanner
