The series, featuring the characters of Detective Sergeant George Bulman (Don Henderson) and his assistant Detective Constable Derek Willis (Dennis Blanch), was a spin-off from the 1976 TV series The XYY Man, adapted from the novels of Kenneth Royce.
(MGB GT spotters go to 4:26)
This Episode:
As The Paradise Set opens Det Sgt Bulman, Det Sgt Derek Willis and Detective Constable Linda Doran are part of a new unit called C23, travelling to different locales in the north to tackle undercover cases that local coppers would be too well known to tackle. Willis is deep undercover with a hard gang of diamond thieves led by Johnny Spencer whilst Bulman and Doran are working on a case involving nightclub hostesses who are being badly beaten. It quickly becomes obvious that both cases are linked.
(Plot spoilers from here)
In the opening sequence Bulman actually arrests Willis and another of the crooks and is somewhat surprised that he is also working for C23, he’s even more surprised to learn that Willis is also now a Detective Sergeant (apparently only for this this job though). Willis and Doran also don’t know each other at this point and Doran thinks Willis is Bulman’s snout.
The actual robbery that Willis is involved with turns into something of a slapstick comedy - the place the crooks were planning to rob is closed and they are forced to leave empty handed. The final show-down when Spencer discovers Willis is a cop is also a bit pantomimish - the fight scene in the back yard of the Paradise Clun not quite hitting the heights of realism the production team might have hoped for. Surprising really as director Carol Wilks had proved herself adept with action as director of 1974 children’s chase drama Soldier and Me.
The Strangers theme tune is quite groovy but it does sound a bit like a daytime talk or quiz show.
Classic Quote:
“How did you know I was getting my toenail done?”
“socks in the pocket.”

George Bulman (fictional character):
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_...)
"Bulman was originally portrayed as mildly eccentric, wearing woollen gloves, using a nasal inhaler and trying to 'better' himself by engaging in further education [...] Increasingly his erudition was used less to make him look pretentious and a joke figure, but instead underlined a zen-like wisdom and otherworldliness. During the five-year run of Strangers, Bulman's eccentricities were increased, and included such traits as a propensity for keeping his belongings in plastic carrier bags and his keeping of a pet hamster named Flash Gordon. His middle name was revealed to be Kitchener. And he drove an MGB GT.

I only had dim memories of this first series, probably seen as a repeat in the '80s.

Yikes! Inspector Japp and Charlie Gimbert get their butts kicked by Willis and Sting's ex!

I hadn't identified Japp, but definitly clocked the unmistakable blonde bouffant of "Charlie Gimbert". I never fail to remind my eye-rolling wife that's she's Sting's ex-wife when I see her on something. You can't imagine her tolerating any nonsense from him!

In his prime, as HERE, Dennis Blanche was one FINE lookin' fella, as was Derek Newark.Strangers would have been a perfect stomping ground for Newark as, despite being a drama, it had plenty of comedic moments, a la "Budgie" from earlier in the 70's.The role Newark played in that (D.I. Bryant)was played so subtly comedic that it made a wonderful change from the hardman/enforcer type that he became pretty much typecasted to play. As this is Granada am i right in thinking that the chap on the right in green (7:50) is Ivy tilsley's "future" husband...BERT?. I WAS going to comment on Don Henderson's hair but others have done the honours on that score.I'll finish where i started.....Dennis Blanche & Derek N were two FINE lookin' lads!!.

I was quite a fan of Budgie back in the day, but on a recent viewing I felt the passage of time hadn't been kind to it - unlike Strangers, with its subtle comedic element, as you pointed out. Yes, the man in green was indeed Ivy Tilsley's husband, Bert. Dennis Blanche gains a beard in a later series.

What kind of a hairdo is Bulman sporting? 13th century monk? Hair all combed forward in bowl shape....😅😂

Perhaps we can coin this unique hairdo "a Bulman". He lets it grow a bit in the next series into an "extended Bulman". I understand gents barbers of the time had black & white photos adorning their walls for punters to point at and choose.

Like Slade guitarist Dave Hill who combed his thinning hair forward into a ludicrous high fringe carefully stuck to his forehead. I can understand why Hill did it, he was still fairly young & something of a pop idol with an image to maintain, but Don Henderson ought to have just conceded defeat, I've always found his barnet distracting & off putting.

@@dobr4481 I tend to always think of Reeves & Mortimer's take off of Slade, and their fondness for Cup-a-Soups. Odd fact: my mum used to push Dave Hill in a pushchair - of course this was well before his illustrious pop career, otherwise that would have been just plain weird! Perhaps Don's agent tried to pursuade him in to an alternative coiffure to get more work. We shall never know.
